General Manager's Report (Continued)Friday Members Night JACKPOT DRAWS Since the start of April we have been running a new format for our Friday Members Night. MINOR Jackpot There is now a MINOR Jackpot of $100 which is drawn from all member numbers. Members must be at the club to be eligible. If the winning member is not in the clubhouse – the nearest member number who is at the club receives a minor prize of a 6-pack of beer. MAJOR Jackpot Draw The major jackpot winner is now drawn from the $1 raffle tickets sold on Fridays. If your raffle ticket number is drawn - you automatically WIN a $50 house credit, PLUS a chance to draw a coloured ball from the bag! To be eligible for the new Members Draw – you simply need to purchase a $1 raffle ticket from one of our committee volunteers on the night (Chris Dower, Alan Hubbard or Vivien Lewers). Remember, the more tickets you buy – the more chances of your raffle ticket number being drawn. The new lucky draw format consists of 17 coloured balls – which consist of 10 x red balls and 7 x different coloured balls which are all held in a bag and hold a different value as follows:-Red balls = $0 | Yellow ball = $20 | Green ball = $30 | Brown ball = $40 | Blue ball = $50 | Pink ball = $60 | White ball = $70 | Black ball = Jackpot value Anyone who purchases a $1.00 raffle ticket can be drawn to select a coloured ball from the bag. If you purchase multiple raffle tickets you have more chances to have your lucky number drawn. The lucky raffle ticket holder automatically wins a $50 house credit – plus the chance to draw any one of the coloured balls and collect the value of that ball. If a red ball is drawn – that red ball is replaced each week until the jackpot reaches the $2,000 limit, then balls are removed each week regardless of colour.

ON THE TEE- WINTER EDITION

If another colour is drawn, the ticket holder collects the value of that ball as a house credit and the coloured ball is removed from the bag until the black ball is drawn in subsequent weeks, and the jackpot struck! Once the black ball is drawn, and the jackpot struck, all balls are returned to the bag and the jackpot is re-set to $500 the following week. For example – if the lucky raffle ticket holder draws a yellow ball – they receive $50 + $20 for a total prize of $70 house credit. Depending on how many raffle tickets are sold each week – the normal raffle prizes are offered as a run-down on the night. Visitor Eligibility If you have a guest with you and they would like to become eligible to win – they simply need to sign up as a Social Member on the night for only $5 and they will be able to buy a raffle ticket and be eligible to participate in the draw. Any of our friendly committee members or bar staff can assist with any visitors who would like to join up as a Social Member. We hope to see you at the Club on a Friday Members Night – or any of our up-coming Club Social Events!

From The Board

First and foremost, I wish to sincerely thank everyone, from all of our awesome Staff to ourloyal Membership for their support and patronage of the Club. A big thanks go to the many volunteers who contribute their time to help present the Club and Course to the best it can be.

A special “Congratulations” goes to our resident Professional, Matthew King, for receiving the QLD PGA Club Professional of the Year at the recent QLD Golf Industry Awards night. This is a well-deserved and I believe a long overdue recognition of Matty’s commitment to Golf, our Club and the number of Charities that he works with and supports.

Adding to this, it is with pride to acknowledge that the Wynnum Bartons/BMD Pro-Am won the QLD PGA Tournament of the Year. On behalf of the Board and Club, I wish to thank the tournament organising committee as well as our own Admin Team for their tireless work behind the scenes in putting together an excellent event and a first-class field of players.

As we move into the second half of our Financial Year, I believe it’s important to keep our members informed of what’s coming up but more importantly how the Club is travelling.

In a hazard, the club may touch an obstruction at address or in the backward movement of the stroke-see note under rule 13-4. Touching the bridge prior to address is also permissible, since an obstruction in a water hazard is not “ground in the hazard”. (This applies even if the bridge has been declared an integral part of the course).

Ladies Golf News

What a fabulous time of year to be playing golf! The course has recovered well after the heavy rain and winds following TC Debbie; we so needed that rain and even though it interfered with our Kath Duthie timetable, it was great to see green back in our course and the dam full.

The Ladies have now competed in the first two Honour Board events for the year. The first was the Kath Duthie 4BBB Matchplay. Sixteen pairs qualified to compete on 23 March and some very tightly contested matches were played over the next few weeks, often with many shots being given due to the keen participation of some of our newer ladies. The final wascontested on 13 April between Jackie Zuidam and Marnie Nathan, versus Barbara Hall and Taimi Kautiainen. Jackie and Marnie won the event, great achievement for them after being runners-up in 2016. We had about 20 ladies follow the field as spectators and it was great tosee such keen interest in the competition.

The Wynnum Open Cup HB was held on 20 April. We had a great field with good representation from other clubs as well. The winner for the second year running was Lindy Phillips with a nett 74, congratulations to her for such a strong performance two years running.

The first Open Invitation Day was our Irish Fourball, sponsored by Bartons Bayside on 16 March. We had a fantastic field of 127 ladies and the luck of the Irish with the weather.

ON THE TEE- WINTER EDITION

The winning team with 89 points was Elaine Wilshire, Pat Field, Lyn Barwick and Lenore Miller. Thanks to Bartons for their continued sponsorship of this event. The field was a sea of green, great participation by all.

Monthly Medals – March Division 1 was won by Janelle Stroud with 74, Division 2 by Denise Dhu with 72 and Division 3 by Elaine Wilshire with a fabulous 70. Weekend Medal for March was won by Rachael Sellars with a great 69. April Division 1 was won by Leah Palmer with 76, Division 2 by Marilyn Price with 74 and Division 3 by Janice Hess with 76. Weekend Medal for April was won by Kay Eleison with 73. May Division 1 was won by Daph Hine with 75, Division 2 by Jan Hamilton with 72 and Division 3 by Helen Camden with 77.

The Ladies Pennants Season is underway with teams competing in Division 2 (off the stick) and Weekend 2 (handicapped). The new purple shirts make the teams really stand out and the ladies have been performing well. So far Division 2 has played 3 games, won two 3/2, lost one 2/3. Weekend 2 have won both their matches and we hope are on a roll! Great competitive play! Other standout events in the ladies’ calendar have been the fun event on 27 April, Wipeout where ladies dressed in their finest beach /surf attire. Division 1 was won by Denise Dhu & Sandra Samuels, Division 2 (and best dressed) by Helen Thomas and Sandra Cosgrove. We were successful in winning back the Terry Termite Trophy in our interclub annual challenge against Redcliffe on 4 May. It’s good to have Terry back in our trophy cabinet!

Course Report

It seems incredible that we can now say Winter is now here. I can't believe how fast the year has gone and these recent short weeks haven't helped either although luckily the grass has all but stopped growing across the courses.

The oversow program on the greens is completed and I am very pleased with the outcome. As discussed in the last newsletter we are trialling a few different variances in the seed application this year and it will be interesting to hear member’s feedback on the greens surfaces over the coming months with the different variances that have been put in place.

As we head into the cooler months and turf growth/recovery rates tend to slow down on the golf course so it becomes more important than ever to leave the course as YOU would like to find it. That refers to sanding divots, repairing pitch-marks and raking bunkers. Divots on fairways take a lot longer to recover at this time of year so filling them with sand and smoothing them is most important a heaped pileof sand in the divot is not healthy for the turf’s recovery or our cylinder mowers used to cut fairways so please try to smooth these little piles of sand out.

Did you know?? The average number of ball marks made on greens per round is 8 per golfer. Assuming only 130 rounds are played each day on your course, your greens receive 1,040 pitch mark ball impressions daily, 31,000 per month or more than 374,400 per year. Are you wondering how to make a putt under these conditions? PLEASE REPAIR YOUR PITCH MARKS!!

Once again I would like to say THANK YOU to our army of men and women volunteers your work does not go un-noticed especially from thecourse staff. Our volunteers contribute at least 50 hours of voluntary labour each week to the golf course doing the less specialised jobs that the course staff are unable to get too. These jobs may seem small and unnecessary but in the bigger picture at the end of each week they contribute greatly to the finished product.

Golf Course Care Tips

Bunker Care Never walk down the face of a bunker, always enter the bunker from the lowest edge ensuring minimal disturbance to the bunker face. Before leaving the bunker, a player should rake to the middle of the bunker with the rake head pointing in the general line of play.

Golf Carts The use of motorised carts, three wheeled motor bikes or any other type of vehicle on course is subject to the direction and approval of the Board. Club notices and cart directional signage regulating the movement of golf carts are to be strictly observed. It should be particularly noted that carts must not be driven by members within 5 metres around greens (unless on the cart path).

Golf Tip Power 1. Switch On The Power Here's a simple thought to help turn on your power switch: Your weight shift and the clubhead should travel in the same direction. During the backswing, both the weight and the clubhead move away from the target; during the downswing, the direction switches–your weight and your clubhead move toward the target.

2. Own A Release A horse and rider arrive at aseven-foot wall at top speed when, suddenly, the horse stops, catapulting the rider over the jump. The image that's important for your golf swing is the passing along of energy because this is how you transmit power to the golf ball.
