FRAYNE NEWS VOLUME 30 ISSUE 28 / WEEK 8 TERM 3 / 13 SEPTEMBER 2019

It has been a joy and a pleasure to serve the Frayne community. We are blessed with lovely students to work with, we have a dedicated staff and a suppor ve community, all of whom have made it a great place to work.

I thank all members of our community, both past and present for your support, involvement and contribu on to the Frayne community and wish you well into the future”

I hope that we can take a quiet moment to reflect on John’s wonderful life and his outstanding contribu on to the Frayne community – a life ‘centred in Christ.’

Eternal rest, grant unto John, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

CONGRATULATIONS

Our congratula ons are extended to the College’s senior athle cs team, the network of coaches, family and friends for their individual and collec ve efforts in winning the ACC, ‘E’ Division Athle cs Carnival at the WA Athle cs Stadium on Wednesday 11 September 2019.

The outstanding spirit of the team was captured in this unsolicited message from Mr Kyle March (ACC Director of Sport):

“I just wanted to let you know that you would have been really proud of your athle cs team yesterday, I know I was! Mark Aldworth had the squad really well organised and looking the part. The students competed really well and there were some gutsy performances in many events and the relay teams were well drilled. But the thing that really stood out was the spirit within the team. They were engaged in the whole experience and really supported each other. In all my years at ACC events it was the best showing by a Frayne team in terms of team spirit and enthusiasm. Please pass on my congratula ons to the students and staff involved in preparing the team.”

The excep onal success of the team is testament to the passion, drive and determina on of our young athletes which con nues to build over me.  The team also dedicated their efforts to the memory of our recently deceased former Principal, Mr John Armstrong.  A vote of thanks is

extended to Mark Aldworth (Director of Sport) and to the other members of staff who assisted with the prepara on of the team.

With regards and best wishes,

Mr Geoff Mills, Principal

Chaplain’s Reflection

Our Lady of Sorrows

The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is on 15 September, just one day a er the feast of the Exalta on of the Holy Cross, which commemorates the recovery of the Holy Cross by St Helena and its preserva on in Jerusalem.  The Cross is the universal symbol of Chris ans.  Even if it was an instrument of torture, it has become the tree of salva on in which Jesus gave his life for us.  Mary stood at the foot of the Cross par ci‐pa ng in his Passion.

This  tle of the Virgin Mary focuses on the sufferings not only during the Passion and death of Christ but all her life.  Mary is o en portrayed suffering with seven knives or swords piercing her heart.  Remembering the prophecy of Simeon in the Temple "a sword shall pierce through your own soul also, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed" (Luke 2: 34‐35).  Medita ng on this feast, the devo on  of the Seven Sorrows of Mary promotes union with the sufferings of Christ through union with the special sufferings of Mary.  The Seven Sorrows are taken from Scripture: 1 ‐ The prophecy of Simeon; 2 ‐ The flight into Egypt; 3 ‐ The loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple; 4 ‐ The mee ng of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross; 5 ‐ The Crucifixion; 6 ‐ The taking down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross; and 7 ‐ The burial of Jesus.

St Pope John Paul II said that "Mary is the loving consoler of those touched by the many physical and moral sorrows which afflict and  torment humanity.  She knows our sorrows and our pains, because she too suffered, from Bethlehem to Calvary.  Mary is our Spiritual Mother, and the mother always understands her children and consoles them in their troubles.  Then, she has that specific mission to love us, received from Jesus on the Cross, to love us only and always, so as to save us!  Mary consoles us above all by poin ng out the Crucified One and Paradise to us!"

When we remember Mary as the Lady of Sorrows, we honour her as the first and faithful disciple with undoub ng faith.  Let us pray: Father, as your Son was raised on the cross, His Mother Mary stood by Him, sharing His sufferings.  May your Church be united with Christ in His suffering and death and so come to share in His rising to new life.  Looking to the example of Mary, may we too unite our sufferings to our Lord, facing them with courage, love, and trust.  Fr Jesus Bello, College Chaplain, Duncan Campus
