AMERICAN LEGION POST 291 AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION AMERICAN LEGION YACHT CLUB

ARMY

Comrades, Well everybody, we finished the first month of my command year 2016- 2017 with a bang. The new year has started for Post 291 with the best 4th of July weekend that the Post has EVER had.

Another record-breaking event in July was honoring

our WWII/Korean Veterans with a Luncheon Buffet held on July 28th. Attendance reached over 400 which included those veterans and their families, and the day also recognized the 97th birthday of the American Legion. We had a great Big Band who played 40’s tunes and there was a lot of dancing going on. On December 7th, we will be hosting a 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor Luncheon to honor our Post 291 WWII Vets so plan on attending this similar event. More information will be posted later on.

It was an honor to have a Vietnam-Era U.S. Navy Swift Boat PCF816 visit our Guest Dock for on-board tours the weekend of July 16. The crew of the Swift Boat were Vietnam Vets, and LCMR David Bradley, USN Ret. was the Boat’s Commanding Officer. We hosted them Friday night in the Hall and they much appreciated our hospitality. They have been invited back with their boat for the Vietnam Party next April. Thanks to Big Bear Post Legionnaire and 291 Yacht Club member, Celso Morrison, for organizing this event.

We are in the midst of constructing the sound wall on the West patio as dictated by the City and will begin the same sound improvements on the wall behind the BBQ’s. The swamp coolers have been repaired for the kitchen and improved the air vents. We’re doing summer cleanup around the Post with new trash bins and storage shed doors, and better outside lighting for the safety of our members in the parking lot area.

Please, all members note we have NO lifeguards at the beach. Watch your kids and NO bare feet and have appropriate cover ups and shirts on the

C O M M A N D E RDOUG NYE

patio and inside the Post and Bar areas.

Membership Renewal: There was an error in the renewal notices sent out from National for $125. It is $130. A $5 increase. Sorry for the inconvenience if you have already renewed. Come to the office window during business hours and Laurel will handle it.

August wraps up the summer with Jazz on Thursday nights, Dinner and Dancing on Friday nights with a special themed Frank Sinatra Night on August 19. Wear your fedora and come out and enjoy this special evening. There will be more bands to enjoy outside on Saturdays and Sundays with Labor Day weekend ending the official Summer season at the Post. So enjoy the rest of the summer at the Post.

We swing into Autumn with more Yacht Club events, Auxiliary events and Legion events, including 9/11 Remembrance and another themed Friday night--Disco Night in September, Navy Gala Ball in October, and you can’t forget our famous Halloween Costume Party.

I will continue to do my best to communicate with my Officers and Executive Board and our 2016-2017 Command Year will be great in every way if everyone does their part.

Remember: “Veterans First”. Attitude is the Altitude of Success at the American Legion Post 291.

Let’s all work together to make that happen.

For God and Country, Doug Nye, Commander

AMERICAN LEGION POST 291 AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION AMERICAN LEGION YACHT CLUB

Independence Day was a huge success for Post 291 again this year. There were many happy members with their guests enjoying our Pancake Breakfast and Lunch. This year we didn’t provide an afternoon meal but our Burn Your Own hamburgers and hotdogs were available after 5:00pm and the BBQ’s were all busy. The Grumps entertained more than 1,000 members and guests from 1:00 – 5:00 on the BigTop Patio. We didn’t surpass last

year’s mark for dollars raised for our Veterans but we came very close. The last three years have been record years and we’re already planning for 2011.Our WWII/Korea Luncheon continues to be well attended with a packed house. As a Vietnam Vet, I have a warm heart when I have this opportunity to say “Thank You For Your Service” to these Veterans. My dad served with Patton and was at the Battle of the Bulge. He never talked about the war other than mentioning names of towns and countries that he was in, such as Baston, the Ardennes, Belgium and Germany. I learned more when I located his DD214. “Thank You For Your Service” Dad.Coming up this month, in addition to our regular Friday nights, you will be enjoying a special fun night. August 19th will be “Frank Sinatra Night”. A throw-back to the 40’s tunes by all of the crooners, highlighting “Old Blue Eyes”. You’’ll want to join in and dress the 40’s. Wear your hats and Zoot Suits and have lots of fun. Tim Oates will be our headline. He’s been doing Sinatra around southern California for years. He will be bringing his band and Big Band back up music so you’re going to be well entertained. We will continue to have “Jazz Thursday Night”, “Jazz On The Bay”, through September with Tracy Longstreth, Walter Lakota and Mike McKenna as you all have turned out to enjoy Wine and Dining “Under The Stars” in record crowds.Friday nights, Saturday and Sunday afternoons have been well attended throughout July so there will be more through August and September. Let’s keep the warm weather coming . . .I have previewed and approved two new bands for Post 291. FlipOut and Midlife Crisis have now been added to our list of entertainment. You will now be dancing to their music beginning on Sunday August 14th when Randy Garrell and his band, FlipOut, will perform on the BigTop Patio, then Midlife Crisis will be with us on Sunday October 2nd.Continue to join with us on Thursday (6:00-8:30), Friday (6:00-10:00), Saturday (1:00-5:00) and Sunday (1:00-5:00).Don’t forget our Special “Frank Sinatra Night” on August 19th, 6:00-10:00.

6 JUNE 2016 AMERICAN LEGION

AMERICAN LEGION POST 291 AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION AMERICAN LEGION YACHT CLUB

It has been a pleasure for me to be providing weekly entertainment for Post 291 Members and Guests for the past two years. After our Elections last month I will be continuing as your 2nd Vice Commander for a third Service Year (July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017). I have enjoyed every min-ute of these past 2 years, as we have made some improvements on the qual-ity of bands that have been entertaining our Members and their Guests while the

bands have made improvements on the music that they play dur-ing the period of time they entertain us at our Post.

For the past two years, as your 2nd Vice Commander, I have been paying close attention to how you have been responding to our bands, as well as, the music that they perform for us and I have been working with these bands to help them understand what you, our Members, would like to have them play for us during that time they are on our stage.

One of the key factors in the choice of music, and how it is performed, has much to do with their choice of equipment. Such as: Amplifiers, Speakers and their vocal sound systems that they bring with them each time they perform. Most of the bands, that are on my list, have been performing music with bands for as much as 50 years. Their play list usually consist of fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, some nineties and some current two-thousands songs. I have been working with all of our bands to not only keep the volume down but also to improve their play lists. As I’m sure that you all know, these bands are accustomed to entertaining us with top ten cover tunes that hit the charts each year. Some of these songs are played by almost every band that performs at our American Legion. Some bands do a “Spot On” rendition of these songs and others give a very good vocal and musical performance as they give their best effort.

I have had the good fortune to have been working with some of the top performers in southern California, which by the way, is where most of the musical talent is formed and therefore, found in our country.

As I have been telling you all, I continue to scout-out new bands that I feel will fit the criteria and requirements of the majority of our Members and as always, “Please feel free to give me your thoughts and suggestions for new bands”. That means that I would like to hear from you when the bands are good and making everyone happy to have them with us here at the Post, as well.

To continue with our discussion of bands; this last year we heard from “Listen”, a band headed up by Arlan who plays Keyboard, guitar and harmonica. The band consists of a keyboard, bass guitar, lead quitar, drummer and a lady that can belt out some blues, Whitney Houston and Soul. This band was suggested by one of our Members during a Sunday afternoon on the BigTop Patio.

Another new band on our schedule is “Shenanigans”. They are always busy entertaining at other venues around the southland and periodically we have the opportunity to have them with us in the Grand Hall and sometimes on the BigTop Patio. They are a well rounded band with bass guitar, lead guitar, keyboard, drums and

a singer that can wow us all while they do their renditions of their Top Ten play list.

I am also proud to announce that we will be enjoying music from a another new band that I have discovered, the “Joni Ross Band”. Joni is the lead singer with vocal cords that will amaze you. Joni’s drummer is one of the top drummers in the county and he sings some top 10 tunes with vigor as he leads the band with his tremendous vital tempo. The bass player is one of our Tuesday afternoon Hootenanny regulars and his addition to Joni’s band has proven to add an important highlight to their sound. All members of the band are musicians as well as singers so they do a lot of tunes that have beautiful harmony. Certainly a band to get you on your feet and get you some of that exercise that you have wanted.

A band that entertained the sailing racers for the Newport to Ensenada Race Party in April was well received and will be entertaining us on Friday, June 10th from 6:00-10:00 and again on Friday, July 1st, 6:00-10:00 in the Grand Hall.

This new band, “Velvet Thunder”, will Kick-Off the first of four days that are planned for our Independence Day, 4th of July celebration. We will have a four days that will culminate with one of your favorites, “The Grumps”.

The past two years that I have been working with the bands and Fund-Raising, “Independence Day” has been the very biggest event of the year for Post 291. In 2014 we had more than 1,000 Members and their Guests join us for our Pancake Breakfast and Lunch as they enjoyed festivities in that one day and helped us break an all time Fund-Raising record for the 4th of July. Then in 2015 that record was broken as almost 1,500 Members, Guests and public locals joined with us at our days festivities. Our entertainment on the BigTop Patio was a crowd pleaser and kept many of us on our feet throughout the day and many stayed to observe the evening Fireworks Show on the patio as the shows glistened from across Newport Harbor from all directions. You’ll not want to miss it this year. Join us. Have some fun and let’s have another record breaking year . . .

There have been several bands that I have previewed at other performance locations and I have chosen not to bring them into our facility yet as they were not quite ready. There are plans for a Disco Night, Regga Night and maybe a Frank Sinatra Night. Stay Tuned. Over the next few weeks I will continue with my efforts to bring you new entertainment. So, follow with me through this Newsletter, flyers posted in the bar hall and the Table Tents on each of our tables as you enjoy a fabulous meal from our Restaurant or a cocktail from one of our Bartenders. “See you soon”, “For The Good Of The Legion”,Roger Henry, 2nd Vice Commander

Greetings,Our Competition Color Guard team has completed another successful trip to the Department C o n v e n t i o n . Although we do not face much in the way of competition when we perform at the Department level; it is one of the final stepping stones as we make our way to the national competition. At the end of next

month, we will make our way to Cincinnati, OH to compete against other American Legion teams from around the country. We are extremely proud to have another opportunity to represent our Post and our Department as the Department Commander’s Color Guard.

Color Guards have always been a very important part of American History. Throughout history, detachments of soldiers have been assigned to protect the flag in combat, leading marching units, and ceremonial performances. In 1921, during the third American Legion Convention, a resolution was passed to create a band contest during the annual conventions… and so the ritual commission was established. Years later, because of the American Legions foundation in the military, the color guard competition was added for the perpetuation and education of our country’s patriotic history. The color guard competition is dedicated to upholding the proper respects for our National Colors, maintaining accurate protocol, and displaying the point of honor produced by our Nation and it Colors.

Our involvement in the color guard competition does not fall into our primary mission of providing military funeral ceremonies for veterans, or even our secondary mission of supporting community events with Color Guard teams. We perform and compete to uphold the history and traditions; but we will never lose sight of out true purpose…To serve our fallen brothers and sisters so they may be respectfully and honorably laid to rest.

If you are interested in learning more about the Honor Guard or if you are interested in joining the team; please visit our main website (www.honorguard291.com) or contact the main office at 949-673-5070 ext. 7.

HERO ROCKS FOR THE TROOPSHERO ROCKS FOR THE TROOPS

July feels like family month at Post 291. The Post Family organizations work together for the Legion’s famous 4th of July celebration and members bring their whole families to enjoy the facilities. Even our pictures this month celebrate our kids.

Sarah and Katie Sweet created and designed 330 Hero

Rocks for the soldiers of the 314 Tustin Reserve Base being deployed on June 19, 2016. They only had two weeks to prepare the rocks while completing their school year. These remarkable young girls presented each soldier at the deployment with a Hero Rock to keep them safe to help them remember that so many others care while they are far from home.

Girls State was enjoyed by about 500 California girls at the Claremont McKenna College. Unit 291 sent 10 girls to create and participate in a mock government from citizen to Governor complete with Supreme Court. A life changing experience for all who attended. These young women give us hope for the future. Please come and meet them at our September 21st General Meeting. They will bring their scrapbooks and each speak a bit on their experience. Every year you can hear hearts bursting and tears rolling.

We continue to meet Mondays at 6pm-8pm to learn how to knit, weave them on looms, crochet or just help make the plastic yarn. We have a goal of 300 mats to present to homeless Veterans at the Orange County Stand Down scheduled for September 23rd through 25th so are looking for serious help! Bring friends and family to join the fun. Please note that there is a moratorium on bag donations due to storage constraints.

Our unit has open Chair positions so please let any of us know what interests YOU. You might even get together with a friend to co-chair a committee. Everyone is busy but we ALL have a little time to help in some way. More information is available at the website ALA291.com under the Programs tab but please approach any officer or Chair for help or questions.

See you at our next General Meeting on Wednesday, August 17th at 6:30pm! With your help, supporting our Legion Family,Cat Katz, President Unit 291
