Membership BasicsWhat dues do I charge?Local PTA dues include: $2.25/National dues + $2.25/State dues + Local PTA dues, as specified in your bylaws.

• Anyone may now join any PTA (no age restrictions).• We cannot pay dues, or buy a membership, for anyone.• One membership = one vote.• Faculty/staff, community members, students, businesses and

organizations may join PTA but must pay the same dues, unless your bylaws specify otherwise.

• Membership for businesses and organizations is listed under one name; for example, “Sam Smith, A#1 Cleaners.”

• Texas PTA Honorary Life Members are exempt from paying State dues, but still must pay local and National dues.

Membership BasicsLife Membership

• A Texas PTA Honorary Life Member is exempt from paying the state portion of their dues at one PTA of their choosing per Honorary Life Membership Award received.

• The Local PTA does not have to pay the state portion of dues for Texas Honorary Life Members.

• Texas PTA Honorary Life Members are VOTING members of your local unit.

• Texas PTA Honorary Life Members do not have to be a life member of the unit that honored them with the membership.

• You can find the history of Life Memberships by visiting http://www.txpta.org/resources/, then click on Members, then Awards, then Life Member Rosters. There is a roster for each letter of the alphabet and you can search by the local PTA.

Membership Basics• Mail the Texas PTA Membership Roster and Dues Report and state

and national portions of dues to Texas PTA, when collected.• Texas PTA will submit the national portion of dues to National PTA.• An individual may join more than one PTA by paying the national,

state and local dues for each association.• A minimum of 20 members is required to organize a PTA and

maintain active status. A PTA must be active to participate in PTA Programs (Reflections) and vote at Convention.

• PTA membership rosters may not be released to outside parties.• Members should be recruited and reported year-round. Members

who joined after March 15, 2014 should still be reported to Texas PTA and will be posted to the 2014-2015 membership reporting year.

Membership Reporting DatesYEAR-ROUNDMembership recruiting and reporting is year-round! Members may join your PTA anytime during the year. Members are eligible to participate in the business of your PTA as soon as they join.October 15:Local PTAs that have not paid dues for at least 20 members by October 15 will be designated asinactive.

Dues and a roster for at least 20 members must be postmarked by October 15 to obtain eligibility to vote at the Texas PTA Annual Convention and to participate in the Reflections Program beyond the Local level. The total number of members on this date determines achievement for Fall Membership Awards. Some membership award forms are due on this date.

December 1: PTAs that submit dues for at least twenty members by October 15 are eligible for one credential card for

the president and one credential card for every 50 members or a fraction thereof, based on membership totals as of December 1.

March 15: Local PTAs that have not paid dues by March 15 for the entire membership year will remain designated as

inactive and services will cease. Spring membership awards and achievements are based on the total reported membership postmarked by

March 15. Texas PTA's membership total as of March 15 also determines the number of voting delegates for Texas at the National PTA Convention each Summer.

April 1: Membership names and dues received after April 1 will automatically be posted onto the next year.

Membership Cards• Membership cards are distributed to States from National PTA based

on that State's membership total from the prior year. Texas PTA disburses membership cards to Local PTAs based on each PTA's prior year membership total. An Officer Form must be on file with Texas PTA for a Local PTA to receive cards. Additional membership cards may be requested after dues and a roster are submitted to the state office for 90% of the initial amount distributed.

• A membership card is issued to each individual joining a Local PTA, and should be given to the member immediately upon payment of dues, if cards are available. Members must have their card to access member discounts as well as some sections of the Texas PTA and National PTA websites.

• Members must follow the instructions on the membership card to activate their membership card via PTA.org/profile and access member benefits.

Page 9: Membership Training & Roundtable Discussions October 14, 2014

Membership Cards• Membership cards should be completed by the Local PTA

membership chair, as needed, and unused cards may be returned to Texas PTA.

• The membership year now runs from August 1st until July 31st. These dates became effective in 2014, so if someone joined PTA after March 15, 2014, they will remain a member until July 31, 2015.

• Membership cards need to contain the PTA Unit ID Number (four digits in your PTA Fact Sheet), PTA Unit Name, Member Name (one card per member) and Expiration Date (July 31, 2015).

Questions to ask:• Do you know where your membership cards are?• Are you issuing cards to all new members, and on a timely basis?

After all, there’s “no commYOUnity without YOU.” Please incorporate this theme in your publications and events. Reference and marketing materials are available at txpta.org/resources.

• By establishing your PTAvenue account, your PTA is linked to JoinPTA.org, which permits anyone to join your PTA from anywhere in the world
