MEN & WOMEN OF ROTARY:

THE 2013 FEDERAL ELECTION

We have indeed had a tumultuous time with federal politics over the last three years.

We have had an unstable minority government with an unpopular leader unable to sell its policies to the electorate.

We have had a noisy opposition never accepting that they were not in government in view of the fact that they won more seats in the last elections.

We had many independents whose power and influence far outweighed the number of votes they achieved in the polls.

We have had no harmony, and the mindless destructive “chatter” coming from Canberra has done nothing to lift business confidence or morale in our society.

The rudeness & misbehaviour of our politicians has been appalling. Courtesy and respect has been largely non-existent. This is the TOTAL OPPOSITE to The Rotary Way!

Running politics by slogans is insulting to our intelligence, as is the mindless repetition of simplistic arguments.

They can all be condemned – if our politicians could have taken a three year holiday at the taxpayer’s expense we would have been far better off.

I would like to recommend to our politicians that they follow the Rotary four way test:

- Is it the truth?

-Is it fair to all concerned?

-Will it build goodwill & better friendships

-Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

I encourage Club Members to vote with reference to this test rather than blindly following an ideology, which will only encourage the existing madness to continue, whoever wins.

T.A.

JORGEN BOBENKO MADE AN HONORARY MEMBER OF THE CLUB In a moving ceremony today, past member Jorgen Bobenko was made an Honorary Member of the Club. Jorgen chaired a number of Committees of the Club in the 1990’s, and conducted the famous Stanley White jewellery shop in Puckle Street, Moonee Ponds for many years. Unfortunately he was involved in a horrific bicycle smash awhile ago, from which he still suffers. Jorgen still puts in for the Club, crafting the Royce Abbey Award badges and helping Roger administer the programme. It was a thrill to have Jorgen with us today and many members remain in prayer that he will be able to join us on a regular basis in the future.

certificate and his dinner plaque.

VISIT OF ASSISTANT DISTRICT GOVERNOR AUSTEN BURLEIGH FROM THE RC OF MELBOURNE At lunchtime today the Club was honoured with a second visit of Assistant District Governor Austen Burleigh from the RC of Melbourne. Mr. Burleigh looks after the Gateway Cluster of Clubs. He is a retired banker from the National Australia Bank, having worked both locally and internationally.

Austen has been awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship for his distinguished service to Rotary and we were privileged to have him with us. In his address to the Club, Austen noted that it was the RC of Melbourne who chartered our Club in 1935. Within our District we were the third Club formed, behind Melbourne and Bendigo. We were the first suburban club in Melbourne. Paul Harris personally visited the Club before it was Chartered, and past member John Steele was there! Our Club:

has produced six District Governors & one world President; and

is the biggest Club by more than double in the Gateway cluster.

ADG Austen encouraged us to engage with the Rotaract Club of Tullamarine.

Austen complimented Steve Roe for the wonderful Contact newsletters issued in 2012-2013. He was less confident with respect to the current editor.

Austen referred to this year’s theme: ‘Energise Rotary & Change Lives’.

Austen said that whatever we set out to achieve we must be realistic in our challenge: “You can do anything but you cannot do everything, but DO SOMETHING!”

President Boris thanked ADG Austen for his inspiring words, and thanked him for attending our Club meeting.

THE NEW 2013-2014 CLUB DIRECTORIES These were handed out today. Thank-you Michael Cariss who as always has done a fantastic job!

REPORT FROM ELLIOTT J. NEAGLE, OUR EXCHANGE STUDENT IN JAPAN It's nearly been half a year since I arrived in Japan.

My current host family, who I've been living with since early May, have been wonderful. They ask heaps of questions about me, and about Australia. One interesting place they've taken me to recently was the "Notojima Aquarium", showcasing some sea creatures only found in Japan. This Sunday host parent's son Kazu will come back to Japan, after his exchange in America. We'll be able to talk about exchange, and the differences he found in the American way of life.

Aside from school, I've started extra Japanese classes for foreigners. I'm learning the language much quicker now and it feels great structure more complex sentences in my conversations. I'm also getting to know the other foreigners who attend the classes. It's been great to communicate with people from all around the world using Japanese. We also had the chance to go out as a group and go to a restaurant.

It's currently exam week at school. While the students sit the exams, I continue my studies from the Japanese classes. I really like the amount of pride Japanese students have for the school building and its facilities. The library is a great resource, and thankfully they have an English section!

When it comes to Rotary outings, both the inbounds and the outbounds came together to see Kanazawa's only annual parade, the "Hyakumangoku Matsuri", which commemorates the arrival of Lord Maeda, a general from the 16th century. The participants consisted of dancers and baton-twirlers from many school teams, including my own! The parade went up the main street and concluded around Kanazawa Castle, the place where Lord Maeda visited. Speaking of the inbounds, both the American and Canadian students have finished their

The Hyakumangoku Parade

exchange and are returning during these weeks. It's hard to watch them go, as they were the first to show us around Kanazawa. But as they leave, I take on the responsibility of guiding the new inbounds, now that I'm the one who knows my way around Kanazawa. I think it'll be an amazing experience to answer any questions they have about life in the Ishikawa Prefecture, and welcome them to Japan! Your friend,

Elliott Note: Elliott sent over some more of his personal pics, which we will publish next week

How to propose a New Member Every Rotarian has the privilege and obligation of seeking qualified members. In this way all Club members can help our Club achieve a full representation of the business and professional life of our community. The basic procedure by which an individual is proposed for and elected to membership in the Rotary Club is:

The prospective member’s name and details are submitted to the Club Services Chair who notes the details and passes them onto the membership subcommittee.

A membership proposal form is in the Directory.

The membership subcommittee ensures that the proposal meets all the classifications and membership requirements within 30 days and then passes the details to the Club Secretary, who arranges for their name to be published in Contact.

Once the name has been published, if there are no objections to the Board within seven days, the prospective member is interviewed and asked to fill in an application form. They are made aware of the requirements of membership and upon payment of an admission fee, they may be inducted into the Club.

Membership Proposal and Application I propose:

Partner’s name:

Name of business or activity:

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: Thank-you for the many letters and emails over the week – I am astounded by the range of topics that Members want to discuss, and am happy to help where possible. Send emails to [email protected] for our attention. This week we publish correspondence from Anne Rogers, Connie Maina, Ian Thomas, Roger Leask, Richard Lawrence & Anonymous.

Dear Tim,

A BRILLIANT SOLUTION Regarding passengers who attempt to bring bombs and other incendiary devices onto planes, I have a brilliant solution. Before passengers board their plane, they will be required to step into a booth that scans for explosive devices and automatically detonates any device found. Unharmed individuals will be released immediately after being scanned.

Muffled explosions, contained within the booth, will be followed by an announcement that a seat has become available for standby passengers. It’s a win-win for everyone. What do you think? Cheers,

Anne Rogers Dear Anne, I know that Barry works in this area for Australia Post, frequently blowing up suspicious parcels. I am pretty sure that you pinched this idea from him. The Editor P.S.: How do I get Barry’s job? It sounds like fun!

Dear Editor,

CULTURAL SENSITIVITY As you will know, my first language is Swahili. Can you please be more culturally sensitive and produce a version of Contact in that language, along with your Braille and large print versions? Yours faithfully,

Connie Maina

Areas of the world speaking my language.

Dear Connie, Simon Cookson has told me that when he reads Contact after drinking a few red wines, he is pretty sure that Contact is written in Swahili! You will be the judge.

The Editor

Dear Tim,

GRAVY & ORANGE JUICE STAINS I was very concerned when our former Prime Minister linked people wearing blue ties to supporters of the Liberal Party.

Note the blue tie on Tony!

I have looked in my drawer and my ties all have stains on them which are a memory of the Rotary meal that I ate when wearing each tie. For example, the stain on the tie from the 1996 President’s Night has come from the watery gravy that dripped off the gooey and congealed meat loaf we ate. The 1980 Charter Night tie still has the orange juice stains from the roast duck that was served with an orange speared on its beak - duck a l’orange.

Anyway, I see that many of my ties are blue, and I feel uncomfortable wearing them anymore. Do the customers at the Niddrie Salvos Shop vote for the Liberal Party & will they buy my ties? Yours with interest,

Ian Thomas Dear Editor,

DRESS CODE & BLUE TIES Given the recent edict of the former Prime Minister regarding the wearing of blue ties, I feel the Club’s official dress code should be changed to prescribe blue ties only. I will write to the Board. What should I do with my ties of other colours? Your friend,

Roger Leask Dear Ian & Roger I introduce you to each other! My suggestion: wear red socks!

The Editor

Dear Tim,

MEAT LOAF – NOW CONVERTED Whilst spending hours in Doctor Peter Baker’s crowded waiting room, a fight broke out over who would read the grubby Playboy magazine on offer. I was not interested, so I picked up a tattered September 2011 edition of The Atlantic that Peter had thoughtfully supplied In this mag was an article about meat loaf, and I now know that it derives from Ancient Roman times. In his cookbook De Re Coquinaria, Roman gastronome Apicius features chopped meat combined with spices, bread soaked in wine and pine nuts, and formed into a patty.

A collection of Roman cookery recipes by Apicius,

thought to have been compiled in the late 4th or early 5th century AD

I know that I have complained long and hard about being served meat loaf at Club luncheons, but now having read this illustrious history, I think meat loaf should be served every week exclusively to all Club members of an Italian heritage. Do we need a motion to Board? Yours sincerely,

Richard Lawrence

Dear Richard, A wonderful idea. I have already passed on your email to the chef at Fredricks who is happy to facilitate this idea.

The Editor ------------------------------------------------------ Dear Editor,

IMBECILE Included with this letter is a book that ought to give you many hours of orgasmic pleasure. It is my written findings that you are totally incompetent as a Contact editor and that you should find a job more suitable to your talents, like cleaning tables at McDonalds. Your knowledge is so limited that only your common sense is found in a lesser quantity in this world. You are obviously a throwback to the Neanderthal period and can't cope with the modern world. Do yourself and Contact a favour and quit. The readers would appreciate it.

Anonymous (RB)

Neanderthal Man

Dear Anonymous, I have asked a certain Club member who knows you well to hunt down your identity. You too will be leaving the Club.

The Editor =========================== Holdover letters for next week:

Dr. Peter Condos – A gumboot fiasco.

Anne Ramsay –The Council drainage scheme & lemon curd tart.

Lino Airo Farula – Lawnmowing issues & GMH V8 overhead cams.

Steve Roe (FIVE matters of concern) – The Upper Airspace Mandate 2013, spiders, my underpants, Rufus our dog, and Ikea.
