MARSHALL2011 NOTESMarshall got off to a rough start in non-conference play, but the Thundering Herd has found its footing in C-USA play, tallying a 7-10 mark to date with wins over some of C-USA’s best. Mar-shall owns wins over Southern Miss, UCF and SMU, but have dropped the last three conference games coming into this weekend. Abby Tomas leads the attack for the Herd, as she has totaled 306 kills (3.12 k/s) so far this season. Cameron Yoho is right behind her with 281 kills (2.87 k/s). while Sammie Bane leads the team with 985 assists. Ryanne Milligan leads the squad with 350 digs.

LAST OUTING (Sept. 30, 2011)MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A strong defensive presence helped the Memphis volleyball team improve to 2-1 in Conference USA play and 13-3 overall with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-21) win over Marshall on Sunday.

The Tigers held Marshall to .227 hitting thanks in part to five team blocks and 40 digs. Junior Vesna Jelic posted a team-high 10 digs while junior Marija Jovanovic and freshman Aleksan-dra Petronijevic each tallied nine. Junior Altrese Hawkins paced the Tiger offense with 14 kills. Senior Cameron Yoho led the Thundering Herd with a double-double of 11 digs and 10 kills.

Memphis got off to a strong start in set one with the first three points going to the home team. Hawkins had two early kills to help the Tigers jump out to a 7-3 lead. However, Marshall scored five of the next seven points after finding its offensive rhythm and was finally able to tie the score at 11-11. But the Tiger defense came up big with a powerful block from Lauren Hawkins and Hajnalka Molnar to prevent the Herd from taking the lead. The two teams stayed tight from there with Memphis maintaining a slight advantage but feeling constant pressure from the Herd. That pressure finally paid off for Marshall as it took the lead 19-18 after three straight kills. But the advantage was short-lived as Altrese Hawkins took over the set and powered home four kills in the final seven points to give Memphis the 25-22 win. Hawkins finished the frame with seven kills on .455 hitting.

Set two began the same way as set one, with an early Memphis lead and a powerful attack led by Hawkins. But Marshall quickly got into sync and scored three straight points to go up 5-4. After falling behind, 9-6, the Tigers began making their move, putting together a 5-1 run featuring two aces to regain the lead at 11-10. The Herd tied the score once and had several other opportunities to even the tally, but Memphis stayed strong and took the set, 25-21.

With the Tigers sensing victory and Marshall trying to stay in the match, set three was tight from the opening serve. The Herd used a 3-0 spurt to go in front 9-6 only to see Memphis re-spond with a 7-1 run to build a 13-10 lead. The advantage quickly became 18-12 as the Tigers stayed on the attack, eventually scoring the 25-21 victory.

2010 in ReviewCoach Jauregui and the Tigers welcomed in nine newcomers from across the globe in 2010 and had a successful campaign while getting everyone adjusted to the Memphis way of doing things. The Tigers posted a 16-16 record, including a 9-3 non-confer-ence mark and won both the Memphis Tiger Invitational and Belmont Invitational pre-season tournaments. Altrese Hawkins was named to Conference USA’s All-First Team in addition to being a second-team performer in COBRA Magazine’s 2010 postsea-son awards. Senior Christine Bach accompanied Hawkins on the C-USA All-Academic Team (the second-straight selection for Hawkins and fourth-straight for Bach), while the Tigers earned AVCA’s Academic Team Award for the eighth consecutive season. Bach was also named to ESPN’s All-Academic District IV First Team, while Hawkins earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors.

Like a HawkAltrese Hawkins continues to rake in the honors, as the redshirt-junior was named to Conference USA’s All-Preseason team. The selection comes after her selection to C-USA’s All-Conference First Team following the completion of the 2010 season. Hawkins also earned All-Freshman honors after her first season in 2009. Hawkins was selected to COBRA Magazine’s All-Preseason First Team. She earns the award after a stellar sophomore season in which she downed 483 kills and held a team-best hitting percentage of .305. She was one of only two Tigers to compete in all 122 sets during the 2010 campaign, highlighted by a 29-kill performance against Southern Miss on Oct. 29. The 29-kill showing ranks eighth in the Memphis record book for the most kills in a single match. Hawkins lived up to the hype, as she was named the Memphis Invitational’s MVP and also tabbed C-USA’s Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 29.

800-win MilestoneThe University of Memphis Volleyball program, entering its 40th year in 2011, col-lected its 800th program victory with a 3-1 victory over SEMO on August 26. The Tigers are currently 29th on the all-time NCAA Volleyball wins list.

Juniors RuleWith no seniors of the 2011 roster, the Tigers will rely heavily on their talented junior class of Altrese Hawkins, Cassidy Hawkins, Vesna Jelic, Marija Jovanovic, Maja Kostic, and Hajnalka Molnar, which includes five starters from last year’s squad.

The U of M tallied 17 kills to Tulane’s 13 in the second set, was plagued by errors throughout, ultimately dropping a 25-19 decision. Memphis jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but a service error by A. The Tigers appeared poised to run away with the fourth set after a Tulane attack error gave Memphis an 8-4 advantage, but the Green Wave battled back and took the lead 10-9 on a kill by Lilly Wolfe. CONFERENCE USA

After marking its 15-year milestone during the 2009-10 season, Confer-ence USA is still going strong. From the beginning, dedication to excel-lence has been the league’s guid-ing principle and remains today a common thread for a promising fu-ture. C-USA is home to 12 nationally prominent, tradition-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP. This combination enhances men’s and women’s programs that are immersed in athletic success and academic prowess. Together, we are committed to excellence, integrity and leader-ship in athletics, academics and in our communities. All C-USA institutions sponsor Divi-sion I-A football, along with several other men’s and women’s athletic pro-grams, many of which compete regu-larly for NCAA Championships. C-USA sponsors competition in 20 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 11 for women (bas-ketball, cross country, golf, rowing, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball). The league sponsors numerous academic awards, including the Com-missioner’s Honor Roll and the Com-missioner’s Academic Medal, indica-tive of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA annually awards 12 post-graduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institu-tional Academic Excellence Award. Conference USA also added a Spirit of Service Award, recognizing stu-dent-athletes three times a year for a combination of significant community service efforts, good academic stand-ing and participation in their elected sport.
