QUiCK FaCtSTigers vs. East Carolina

This is the 22nd meeting between Memphis and East Carolina. The Tigers won the first meeting between the two teams, 66-56, but ECU has picked up a lot of momentum since that loss, winning nine of 11 meetings. The Pirates drilled a three in the final 1:30 of the game on Thursday night against UAB to hang on for a 53-52 victory that allowed ECU to remain unbeaten at home in C-USA play and improved their overall mark at home to 14-1 on the season. The Pirates have not lost a game in Minges Coliseum since Nov. 17th, when they fell 72-62. It will be a stiff test for a Tigers team that needs a win to remain in the top four of the C-USA stand-ings. Not only does ECU bring the long home winning streak into Sunday’s game, the Pirates still have a shot at the conference championship, trailing SMU by just one game. The Pirates are currently tied with Tulane at 10-4 in the C-USA mix for second place, but hold the tie break over the Green Wave on the strength of a 55-52 road win in New Orleans back in January. The Pirates would love to fall into a tie with SMU, as they handed the Mustangs their first C-USA loss of the season, 63-47, in Minges Coliseum on Feb. 14th.

In the Loss at Tulsa - Memphis gave up 40 first half points in the loss at Tulsa, the most points given up by the Tigers since C-USA play began. - The Tigers suffered their first-ever loss to Tulsa in the Melissa McFerrin era. - Memphis’ 11-point loss was their third double-digit point loss of the conference slate. - Memphis committed 21 turnovers in the road loss. That marked the third time this season the Tigers turned it over 20 or more times in league play; both of the other games were against UAB, two games Memphis won. The Tigers’ season-high in turnovers was 26, committed in the win at UT Arlington in the fourth game of the season. - After three straight games with double-digit assists, Memphis had just nine assists on 26 field goals at Tulsa. - Memphis attempted just 16 free-throws, the fewest since the loss at Marshall on Feb. 3rd. The Tigers hit just nine of those 16 tries. Their 56.3 percent stroke from the line was the lowest since the Marshall loss, when they shot just 44.4 percent. In the last three games, Memphis has shot over 60 percent from the stripe in just one game, hitting 63.0 percent of their shots in the win over UTEP. - Memphis out-rebounded its opposition for the second time in three games. But with Tulsa hitting 49.1 percent from the field, there wasn’t much for the Golden Hurricane to rebound. The 49.1 per-cent shooting night was the best for any Tiger opponent since Middle Tennessee hit 55.6 percent of hits shots in the second game of the season in the Preseason WNIT. - Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir scored double digits for a fifth straight game, the longest of her career. She also hit three three-point field goals in the game for the first time in her career, finishing with 14 points. -Ariel Hearn had two assists, and now has 99 assists on the season with two regular season games remaining. - After averaging 9.5 points over the last two games, Pa’Sonna Hope was held scoreless in the loss at Tulsa. She also finished with just two rebounds, the lowest rebound total in four games for her. She did add one blocked shot, and now leads Memphis with 31 blocks on the season. - Asianna Fuqua-Bey had been a force inside for Memphis, hitting 12 of 17 free throw attempts in a three game streak for the Tigers. But in the last three games, the freshman has gone just 1-for-9 from the line. She just missed her third double-digit career rebounding game, finishing with nine rebounds in the loss on Thursday night. -Jaymie Jackson is slowing returning to the lineup for Memphis after missing two games with a leg injury. A 73.5 percent free-throw shooter, the freshman guard uncharacteristically struggled from the line on Thursday, going 2-for-4 (50 percent). She has not recorded a steal for the Tigers since the Feb. 14th game against UAB. - Sophomore post Ann Jones had a tough night from the field in the loss at Tulsa. She attempted seven field goals, the second-highest number of tries on the season for her, but hit just two, shooting a season-low 28.6 percent from the field. - Nicole Dickson needed a late field goal to make it, but she scored double-digit points for the 27th time in 28 games this season, finishing with 11 points. She was just 1-for-6 from three-point range and 5-for-15 from the field in the loss. She was second on the team with eight rebounds, but had four turnovers against just one assist in the loss.

Dickson and Hearn Sweep C-USA Honors for a Third Time Nicole Dickson and Ariel Hearn swept the Conference USA weekly honors for a third time this season. Dickson earned her fourth C-USA Player of the Week award for averaging a double-double of 24.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in a pair of wins while shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 46.7 percent from three-point range. She had a season-best 16 rebounds in the overtime win at Southern Miss, and scored 20 first half points in the win over UTEP. Hearn earned her third C-USA Freshman of the Week honor after averaging 16.0 points, 7.5 re-bounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game. She also shot 50 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent from three-point range. This is the third time this season that the duo has won both awards in the same week. They also won both awards on Dec. 31st and Jan. 7th. Dickson additionally won the player of the week award on November 19th. Dickson becomes the first player in school history to earn a C-USA Player of the Week Award for a fourth time. Tamika Whitmore won the award three times in 1997-98 and 1998-99, but never won it four times. Hearn becomes the first Tiger freshman to earn the freshman of the week honor three times. Ann Jones won it twice last season and Nicole Dickson won it once in her freshman campaign.

Hearn Looking for 100 Freshman guard Ariel Hearn started her college career with 12 assists in the first game of the sea-son and hasn’t looked back. She heads into the game at ECU with 99 assists, trying to become just the second Memphis freshman to ever have 100 assists in a single season. The last time a Tiger freshman dished out a 100 assists? 1983-84 when Ruth Ann Forsythe had 101 assists.

Road Wins in League Play & The 10 C-USA Wins Mark Memphis finished the regular season with a winning record in Conference USA road games for the first time under Melissa McFerrin. The Tigers were 6-2 on the road in conference games with wins at Southern Miss, at UAB, at East Carolina, at SMU, at UCF and at Rice. Road Wins ...................................................... rECorD BrEaKDoWnMcGraw Just Misses Career Mark

Sophomore guard Lauren McGraw finished the UTEP game with nine points on 2-for-4 shooting from the field and 4-for-6 shooting from the free-throw line. The extra points out there cost her a chance to set a career high in scoring, missing her mark of 11 points set in the win at Saint Louis. Mc-Graw was one of four Tigers to hit a three-point field goal on Sunday, knocking down her first make since the loss at UCF back on Feb. 10th. Her first half three was one of a season-best 10 triples on the year for Memphis. The sophomore was unselfish with the ball though, finishing with a season-best four assists against just one turnover. In the last five games, she has nine assists against six turnovers and is 9-for-16 from the free-throw line (56.3 percent).

Abdul-Qaadir Passes Two Benchmarks Junior guard Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir passed a pair of benchmarks in the win over UTEP. Her career-best 19 points pushed her over 600 for her collegiate career at Memphis and her five assists gave her 200 career helpers. She also set a season and career-best, scoring double-digit points for a fourth straight game. That marks the first time in 85 career games that the Springfield, Mass., native has scored double-digit points in four straight games.

Hope Pushes Double-Double Mark in 2-0 Week Junior center Pa’Sonna Hope came off the bench and gave Memphis some big minutes in the post in the two wins last week. She averaged 9.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game last week and was 8-for-13 from the field (61.5 percent). She battled foul trouble against UTEP, finishing with four fouls, but played over 20 minutes for a second straight game. Her only rough spot on the week was at the free-throw line, where she was 3-for-7 (42.9 percent). Her eight defensive rebounds against UTEP were a Tiger career-best and her five offensive boards tied her career-best mark.

Dickson Ties Ellis’ Block Mark Senior Nicole Dickson had four blocks last week, two in each win. That gave the senior 26 blocks for the season, tying Savannah Ellis for fourth in the Tigers’ senior single season record book. For her Memphis career, Dickson has 59 career blocks, which ranks the player more known for her scoring in the league, for sixth all-time in the Memphis record book.

Dickson Moves to 10th in Career Scoring Nicole Dickson has moved into the career top 10 at Memphis in scoring with 1,606 career points. That puts her squarely at 10th all-time, but she would have some work to do to move up any higher though. Kitty Allen is in ninth place with 1,823 points, 217 points away from where Dickson now sits.

Dickson Just Misses Third Consecutive Double-Double The Tiger coaching staff asked the team to focus on rebounding in the game against Southern Miss, and senior co-captain Nicole Dickson led the way, posting a double-double of 22 points and 16 rebounds. That was Dickson’s sixth double-digit rebounding effort of the season an her sixth double-double this year. She now has 16 career double-doubles, ninth in school history, and needs one more to move to a tie for sixth in double-doubles, where Ashley Thornton, Diane Gary and Linda Street currently sit with 17 double-doubles.

2012-13 MEMPHIS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTESuNIvErSITy Of MEMPHIS

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basket-ball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s mod-ern history.

McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent the previous four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors.

Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minne-

sota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten champion-ship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin re-cruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationally-ranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.
