Guelph had to overcome plenty of adversity in the early going after losing three of the first five games by an agonizing combined total of just four points. But the Gryphons manufactured a great turnaround that began in week 6 with a big 27-24 road win over the Laurier Golden Hawks. After a much-needed bye, fourth-year quarterback Theo Landers and breakout running back Jean-Paul Cimankinda helped Guelph orchestrate defeats of the Toronto Varsity Blues and the Waterloo Warriors to finish the season with a three-game win streak. The Gryphons pulled off an incredible 47-44 double overtime victory against Waterloo in the season finale and they repeated the feat in the OUA quarter-final, knocking off the high-octane Warriors 45-34. Guelph was on the brink of elimination on the road down 11 points late to the Ottawa Gee-Gees. But 17 unanswered fourth-quarter points, capped by an incredible 59-yard touchdown catch from Thomas Bresciani in the final minute, propelled the Gryphons to a 27-22 win and a berth in the 111 th Yates Cup. The upstart Guelph team didn’t have enough against the powerhouse Western Mustangs, losing the title game 63-14. 2017-2018 Season Record: 5-3 (5th in the OUA) Playoff Record: 1-1 (lost to Western in OUA semi-final) Expectations were high for the Gryphons football program heading into the 2017 OUA season. Two narrow overtime losses, including a heartbreaker in London against the eventual Vanier Cup Champion Western Mustangs, was a difficult way to start off the year. But Guelph would show the resolve of a great team, winning five of the six remaining games on the regular season schedule, a run that started with a record-setting 81-10 home win over Windsor on Saturday, Sept. 9. That point total marked the most ever scored by a Gryphons team in school history. Guelph had to deal with the loss of their veteran quarterback James Roberts, who was hurt in the Homecoming game against McMaster, but backup Theo Landers took the reins and helped the team to three straight wins for a 5-3 record. The Gryphons entered the OUA playoffs with momentum and produced a big 30-8 road win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the quarter-final. Guelph’s solid season would come to an end in London when they fell to the powerful Mustangs in the semi-final. The Gryphons had several incredible individual achievements in 2017. Fifth-year running back Johnny Augustine climbed to second all-time on the U of G rushing list, while also establishing the school record for rushing touchdowns at 19. First Team All-Canadian kicker Gabe Ferraro had a year to remember, establishing the U SPORTS single-season record with 33 field goals, eclipsing his brother Daniel’s record of 26. The Mississauga, ON native also set the school record for points in a season (126) and career field goals (69). 2016-2017 Season Record: 3-5 (6th in OUA standings)

Playoff Record: 0-1 (lost at McMaster in OUA Quarterfinal)

For the first time in five years, the Gryphons posted a sub-.500 record during the regular season, finishing 3-5 and sneaking into the OUA playoffs as the

No. 6-seed. The Gryphons, who entered the 2016 season as defending Yates Cup champions, officially saw their hopes of repeating as conference champs

come to an end following a hard-fought 17-11 loss in Hamilton to the No. 3-seeded McMaster Marauders.

After a season opening win over U of T, the Gryphons were upset on the road in Windsor in Week 2, losing 33-29 to the Lancers. The Gryphons would

bounce back the following week with a win over Queen’s. Despite the fact that the Gryphons were victorious in Week 3, the team fell out of the CIS Top

10 rankings. It marked the first time since Week 6 of the 2012 season that the Gryphons were not ranked nationally, snapping an impressive streak of 37

consecutive polls in which Guelph was ranked in the Top 10.

The Gryphons would go on to lose each of their next four games, all of which came against opponents who were themselves ranked in the national Top 10

(Ottawa, Western, McMaster & Laurier). Despite the four-game skid, the Gryphons were able to finish strong with a win over York in the regular season

finale to earn a playoff berth, marking the fifth straight season the Gryphs reached the postseason.

The playoff game at McMaster came down to the final play, with James Roberts being intercepted near the Marauders endzone in the dying seconds.

The 2016 season also marked the first season in charge for interim Head Coach Kevin MacNeill. MacNeill spent the previous six seasons as the team’s

defensive coordinator.

2015-2016 Season Record: 7-1

Playoff Record: 2-1 (beat Western in Yates Cup, lost to Montreal in Mitchell Bowl)

For a fourth consecutive year, the Gryphons posted a 7-1 record during the regular season, good for 2nd in the OUA standings. After earning a first-round

bye, the Gryphons played host to the OUA’s No. 5-seed in the Carleton Ravens. Thanks in large part to third year running back Johnny Augustine (35

carries, 245 yards, 2 TDs) the Gryphons won 33-21 over Carleton to book a spot in the Yates Cup for the third time in a four year stretch.

For the 108th edition of the Yates Cup, the Gryphons would travel to London to face the No. 1-ranked team in the country in the Western Mustangs. After

trailing through the first three quarters, the Gryphons would outscore Western 13-0 in the 4th and hang on to win 23-17 in what was U of G’s first Yates

Cup title since 1996. The Gryphons would then welcome the defending Vanier Cup champion Montreal Carabins to Alumni Stadium for what was just

the second bowl game to be played on the U of G campus in school history (the only other being the 1984 Central Bowl which Guelph won 12-7 over

Calgary). In the Mitchell Bowl, the Gryphons lost 25-10 to Montreal, ending a remarkable 2015 campaign.

Several regular season records were set by the Gryphons during the 2015 season. Return specialist Ryan Nieuwesteeg led the country with 846 punt

return yards. That total was a single-season school record and was also the second highest single-season total in CIS history next only to Laurier’s Dillon

Heap who had 912 punt return yards in 2009. Nieuwesteeg also became the Gryphons all-time leader for punt return yards in a career. His 1,592 career

punt return yards put him No. 1 in U of G history, surpassing Michael Palmer who now sits in 2nd with 1,211 career punt return yards.

QB James Roberts set a new Gryphon record with 18 TD passes during the regular season (surpassing the previous mark of 17 set by Justin Dunk in

2007), while RB Johnny Augustine set a single-season school record with 12 rushing TDs during the regular season (surpassing Gerrit Stam’s mark of 11

set in 1996). Finally, receiver Jacob Scarfone set a U of G single-season record with 940 receiving yards in 2015 (surpassing Jeff Keegan’s mark of 936

set back in 2005).

The Gryphons opened the season as the No. 6-ranked team in the CIS Top 10 and remained in the Top 10 rankings every week of the season (never

falling lower than No. 7 and finishing as No. 5 in the final ranking of the year).

The 2015-2016 football season also marked the final year in charge for Head Coach Stu Lang who moved into an advisory role shortly after the season.

Defensive Coordinator Kevin MacNeill was named Interim Head Coach on January 11, 2016.

2014-2015 Season Record: 7-1 Playoffs: 1-1 (Lost to McMaster in the Yates Cup)

For a third straight year the Gryphons finished the regular season with a 7-1 record, earning themselves a second place finish in the conference and a first-round bye. In

the OUA semi-finals, the Gryphons would play host to rival Western. After defeating the Mustangs on a last-second field goal in their regular season meeting, the

Gryphons would once again come out on top, this time by the tune of a 51-26 victory. With the win, the Gryphons advanced to the 107th Yates Cup which was a re-match of the 2012 edition – Guelph versus McMaster, in Hamilton. The Gryphons would fall just short of securing their first Yates Cup title since 1996, as they would lose 20-

15 to the Marauders (despite the fact that McMaster was held without an offensive touchdown in the game).

Overall, 2014 was another impressive year for the Gryphons in which numerous records were set. Kicker Daniel Ferraro set the CIS single-season record with 26 made

field goals (surpassing the mark of 25 set by Laval’s Christopher Milo in 2008). Quarterback Jazz Lindsey set the single-game school record for passing yards (514) and completions (34) in a 49-46 victory over Western. Alex Charette led the Gryphons in receptions (62), receiving yards (742) and receiving touchdowns (7) while running

back Rob Farquharson moved up from eighth to second on the Gryphons’ list of all-time leading rushers (his total of 2,675 career rushing yards are second only to Nick FitzGibbon’s 3,601). The Gryphons were also well represented on defence and special teams; Curtis Newton’s 49 solo tackles were tied the top spot in the OUA,

Nicholas Parisotto’s four interceptions were the second-highest total in the conference, and return man Ryan Nieuwesteeg led the OUA in punt return yards (739).

The Gryphons had a total of 13 players named to the OUA All-Star team, while two players were recognized nationally as linebacker Curtis Newton and return specialist

Ryan Nieuwesteeg were named Secon-Team All-Canadians.

The Gryphons were listed in the CIS Top 10 polls every week of the season and were ranked as high as T-4 (Oct. 21 alongside the eventual Vanier Cup champion

Montreal Carabins).

2013-2014 Season Record: 7-1

Playoffs: 1-1 (Lost to Queen’s in the OUA Semifinals)

The football team continued their momentum from last season and finished the 2013 season with a 7-1 regular season record, earning themselves the third place spot in

the OUA standings. They were able to win their quarterfinal game against the Windsor Lancers with an exciting 31-21 win, moving on to face Queen’s in the OUA semifinals. Hoping to repeat their 2012 season, the football team was looking to once again move on to the Yates Cup final, but was unfortunately knocked out of the

playoffs by the Gaels with a 34-17 final in Kingston.

a second team CIS All-Canadian and a first team OUA all-star. Rookie Andrew Graham was named a first-team OUA all-star after finishing with 19 special teams tackles, 2.5 sacks and one interception.

Four players were named to the OUA second team including Jakob Piotrowski, A’dre Fraser, Cam Walker and Taylor Palmer. Fraser led the team in kick return yards

with a total of 205 yards and an impressive 472 yards on punt returns. Walker finished the season with 26.5 tackles and four sacks while Palmer had his best season for

the Gryphons with 26 tackles, five game-changing interceptions, and two break-ups.

2012-2013 Season Record: 7-1

Playoffs: 1-1 (Lost 30-13 to McMaster in Yates Cup)

The football team had an incredible turn around year to finish the regular season with a 7-1 mark to grab the second spot in the OUA standings and earn a bye through the

first round of playoffs. In the OUA semi-finals, the Gryphons squared up against the Queen's Gaels and stood tall to punch their first ticket to the Yates Cup with a 42-39 win. Unfortunately, in the Yates Cup Final in Hamilton, the Gryphons season was brought to an end at the hands of the undefeated McMaster Marauders with a 30-13 final.

In their cinderella season, the Gryphons saw quite a few players named to the OUA All-Star Teams. Rookie kick returner A'dre Fraser (Halifax, NS) and second year rush/cover Cameron Walker (London, Ont.) were both named OUA First Team All-Stars. After rushing for 936 yards and seven touchdowns, third year running back Robert

Farquharson (Niagara Falls, Ont.) was named an OUA Second Team All-Star along with receiver Dillon Dimitroff (Burlington, Ont.) who racked in 330 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Offensive tackle Matt Richardson (Caledonia, Ont.) rounded out the offensive Second Team All-Stars. On the defensive side of the field, the Gryphons

received three OUA Second Team All-Star nods including linebacker John Rush (Niagara Falls, Ont.), defensive end Mike Millar (Port Colborne, Ont.), and defensive

halfback Bryan Dunjko (Aurora, Ont.). Rush led the Gryphon defence with 55 tackles (41 solo) and 4.5 sacks to climb to second in the OUA defensive rankings. Millar and Dunjko were both critical to the defence that carried the Gryphons into the postseason.

Fifth-year defensive back Zach Androschuk (Sarnia, Ont.) also received the prestigious Russ Jackson Award recognizing excellence in football, academics, and citizenship.

2011-2012 Season Record: 2-6

The Gryphon men’s football team’s season came to an early end this year with a 15-10 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks at Alumni Stadium. With the

loss, the Gryphons finished the season at 2-6, not good enough to secure a playoff spot. Receiver Jedd Gardner (Niagara Falls, ON) became the

Gryphons’ all-time leader in receptions with 153 during the final game of the season.

Despite not qualifying for the playoffs, the Gryphons still saw success in the OUA. Two Gryphons were named to the OUA Second Team including

Sebastian Howard (Niagara Falls, ON) and Bryan Dunjko (Aurora, ON). Assistant coach Brian Cluff was awarded OUA Volunteer Coach of the Year.

Sebastian Howard was steady all season and cover Bryan Dunjko was integral to the defensive unit and picked up four interceptions to finish second in

the league.

While their season may have come to an early end, the future for the Guelph football team looks to be in good shape heading forward.

2008-2009 After a slow start to the season, the Football Gryphons battled to win three of their last four games and finish with a regular season record of 4-4. That

was good enough to earn them fourth place in the OUA and clinch a home playoff game. Unfortunately, the Gryphons lost to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the

first round of the playoffs 42-37 at Alumni Stadium. The Gryphons earned a total of seven All-Star selections. Jedd Gardner (Niagara Falls, ON) and Rob

Maver (Brampton, ON) were named double All-Star recipients. Gardner was a First Team All-Star as a wide receiver and Second Team All-Star as a kick

returner. He was third in CIS receiving with 812 yards and four touchdowns. He ran the ball three times for 39 yards and returned six punts for 505 yards

and two kickoffs for 91 yards. Maver was a First Team All-Star place kicker and punter. He led the CIS with 3,090 punt yards and OUA with 18 field

goals. He averaged 46.12 yards on 67 punts and 55.17 yards on 35 kickoffs. Other First Team OUA All-Stars included running back Nick FitzGibbon

(Puslinch, ON), defensive halfback James Savoie (Niagara Falls, ON) and cornerback Sean Riley (Burlington, ON). Quarterback, Justin Dunk (Guelph,

ON) threw for 2,064 yards and ran for 418 yards. Running back Nick FitzGibbon ran for 853 yards and picked up 316 yards in the air. At the CIS level,

the Gryphon team received four All-Canadian nods. Kicker/punter Rob Maver was named both a First Team All-Canadian as one of the best special team

players in the country in the punting category and a Second Team All-Canadian in the kicker category. Meanwhile, James Savoie was named a First

2007-2008 The Football team enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in recent history finishing the regular season with a 4-4 record, marking the second .500

season in ten years. Guelph then hosted their first home playoff game since 1986 and then the 100th Yates Cup, their first Yates appearance since

winning in 1996. Unfortunately, the Gryphons lost to the Western Mustangs 34-21 in the Championship game before a boisterous crowd of 8,500 at

Alumni Stadium. The Gryphons earned a total of seven All-Star selections. Cornerback Sean Riley (Burlington, Ont.) was the sole Gryphon selected as

a First Team All-Star. Riley registered 14 total tackles and one interception this season. Guelph led the conference with four Second Team offensive

selections, led by offensive duo of quarterback Justin Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) and running back Nick FitzGibbon (Puslinch, Ont.). Dunk finished the season

fifth in OUA passing for 1784 yards, with 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, while FitzGibbon was fourth in the province with 794 rushing yards, with

five touchdowns, as well as eight receiving touchdowns and 376 receiving yards. Also recognized as offensive All-Stars for Guelph were, guard Ian

Keleher (Guelph, Ont.) and punter Rob Maver (Brampton, Ont.). Defensive Second Team All-Stars honours went to defensive tackle Chris Hladich (St.

Catharines, Ont.) and linebacker Chris Decker (Guelph, Ont.).

2006-2007 The Gryphons ended the 2006 campaign with a 2-5-1 league record in the OUA standings. Despite not qualifying for the post-season, the Gryphon

offense was clicking all year averaging 422 yards per game, ranking third in the OUA. In their first game on the year, the Gryphons showed persistence

and fortitude taking the defending national champions into overtime, before coming up short in the extra frame. Gryphons’ first-year running back, Nick

FitzGibbon was selected as the Norm Marshall OUA Rookie of the Year after leading the Gryphons with 79 carries for 414 yards and three touchdowns.

Dave McKoy also helped lead the surging offence earning First-Team distinction at the wide receiver position. McKoy was first in the OUA and second

in the CIS in receiving yardage with 858 yards in eight games. In his sophomore season, Justin Dunk topped the OUA charts and was second in the

nation in passing with 2,452 yards earning him Second Team All-Star honours. Jeff Keegan (wide receiver) and Rob Maver (punter) earned the nod on

the Second Team. On defense, cornerback Sean Riley made the Second Team for his third straight year. McKoy was also named First Team All-

2004-2005 In the 2004 campaign, the Gryphons were the most improved team in the league rising from 9th position in 2003 with a 2-6 record to 5th at 4-4. The

Gryphons opened the season strongly with victories over York, Queen's and Windsor. Guelph played the three strongest teams in the second half of

the season falling to Laurier, McMaster and Western. The year was rounded out with a win against Toronto and a loss to Ottawa. In the playoffs,

Guelph won the battle of the stats against the Gee-Gees, but lost the game on the scoreboard. Individually, the Gryphs had 3 OUA All-

Stars including offensive centre Anthony Mason, offensive tackle Mike Dougherty and defensive end Chris Hladich.

2002-2003 The Gryphon Football program looks forward to next year when they strive to improve upon their 2-7 OUA record. Despite an intensive recruiting

campaign by the coaching staff, this young team was lacking in a few key areas. A quarterfinal playoff match-up against the 8-0 McMaster

Marauders, eventual OUA champions, saw the team's hope of advancing disappear. Mike Palmer and Mike Hradil collected OUA First Team All-

Star Honours. Palmer was 4th in the OUA in receptions with 42 catches and 4th in receiving yardage with 690 yards. He was also a force on the

ground returning 31 punts for 235 yards and 16 kick-offs for 192 yards. Capping off his career, team captain and line backer, Hradil, led the OUA in

tackles with 58 for the second year in a row.

2001-2002 Under the new leadership of Head Coach, Tom Arnott, the Gryphons posted a 3-5 record in the 2001 campaign for a 7th place finish. With

convincing victories over York and Toronto, the Gryphons got off to a 2-0 start. However, in weeks three, four and seven, Guelph suffered losses to

three top ten ranked teams in Queen's, Ottawa and McMaster. Week 6 saw the Gryphons put another mark in the win column with a victory over

Waterloo. On an individual note, three Gryphons were selected as First Team All-Stars. Mike Palmer earned honours at both the inside receiver and

special teams returner positions. Statistically, he was 2nd in the OUA and 3rd in the country in kickoff returns by average with 22.9. Jonathan

Bohnert was top vote getter at wide receiver and 5th in the OUA in receiving with 42 completions for 598 yards and 6 touchdowns. Norm Nasser, 5th

in the OUA punting category with 85 punts for 3172 yards was selected as place kicker. Teammates, Elvio Bomben and Mike Hradil, leader in the

OUA and 3rd in Canada in unassisted tackles with 60, were selected to the Second Team. Bohnert, Palmer and Nasser were also named to the CIS

All-Canadian Second Team on the offensive side.

1991-1992 Some early season injuries put the Gryphons in a difficult position and a pair of close losses to eventual Vanier Cup champion,

Laurier and Toronto put an end to hopes of returning to the OUAA playoffs. Individually however, there were a number of

season. Marof was a unanimous selection to the First All Canadian team while defensive back, Bryan Maltby was a second team

selection. Quarterback, Rob Kitching, filling in for the injured Wally Gabler led the OUAA in completion percentage connecting

on 56.8 percent of his passes for 1219 yards. Team List:

1989-1990 The Gryphons extended their league record for making the playoffs to ten years as they finished the regular season with 5 wins

and 2 losses. Despite a disappointing loss to Toronto in the semi finals quarterback, Mike Shoemaker highlighted the year by

winning the Omega Trophy as the outstanding player in the OUAA for the second consecutive season. Dan Tocher and Bryan

Maltby were first team OUAA All Star selections while Tom Newbigging, Bob McLay, Frank Marof, Paul Dragojlovich and Pat

Nield made the second All Star team.

1987-1988 Despite a slow start, the football team made the playoffs for the eighth consecutive season and pulled the upset of the year

knocking off previously unbeaten Western in the semi-finals 22-20 in London. The Gryphons advanced to the Yates Cup Game

for the third time in the past four seasons but dropped a 28-15 decision to Laurier despite a staunch effort. Jim Farrell and Rick

Kohler were named to the first Ail-Star Team while Mike McLarnon, Dan Wicklum and Tom Dimitroff made second team.

Wicklum was also the second player chosen in the recent CFL Draft by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. New coach, Dan McNally,

can look forward to an even better season in 1988.

1986-1987 The football team had another successful season as they finished in second place in the regular season with a 5-2 record and made

another appearance in the Yates Cup Game. This was accomplished despite having a large number of first year players especially

on defence. Guard Lou Godry was named J.P. Metras Trophy winner and made the All-Canadian team for the second consecutive

year, and was selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game in Palo Alto, California. Other Gryphons who were accorded All-

Star honours were Al Anonech and Gus Alevizos who made the second team All-Canadian stakes. Mark Hurst was named a first

team OUAA All-Stars Place Kicker. Rob Ciarafoni, Mike Knighton and Mike McLarnon were selected as second team OUAA

All-Stars.

1984-1985 The Gryphon football team did it all in 1984 as they brought the first ever National Championship to the campus. After winning

the Yates Cup with a thrilling 31-26 victory over the Western Mustangs, the Gryphons then defeated the Calgary Dinosaurs 12-7

in the Central Bowl before more than 8,500 Alumni Stadium fans. They then proceeded to score a come-from-behind 22-13

victory over the Mount Allison Mounties in the Vanier Cup. Four Gryphons were named as OUAA first team All-Stars and wide

receiver Parri Ceci, who set new Gryphon and OUAA receiving records, was named as an All-Canadian and the Ted Morris

Trophy winner as MVP of the Vanier Cup. Dan Wei ton won the Maury Van Vliet Trophy as MVP of the Central Bowl, while

Randy Walters won the Dalt White Trophy as MVP of the Yates Cup game. The team had a 9-3 record overall and managed to

do what no OUAA team had previously accomplished by taking a league title with two playoff wins on the road.

1983-1984 It was another impressive year for the football team as they finished 5-2 in the regular season and had a pair of impressive back-

to-back wins over Western and Laurier. For the third year in a row, the defense led the OUAA and 1984 could even be better as

fifteen lettermen return for that season. Jeff Volpe and Sam Benincasa were selected as OUAA First team All-Stars, while Louie

Godry, Scott Leckie, Mimo Dimuzio and Jeff Yanchus were accorded second team All-Stars. Coach Tom Dimitroff was Coach

of the Year and Benincasa added to his honours with an All-Canadian selection, a national award nomination and the Wildman

Trophy. It was also an outstanding year when one considered the number of first year people who started or who made significant

contributions.

1981-1982 The football Gryphons had one of their finest seasons in recent memory, placing third with a 4 - 2 - 1 record and knocking off

Toronto in the semi-final for a berth in the Yates Cup, emblematic of OUAA supremacy. Unfortunately, the Western Mustangs

broke the bubble in an otherwise Cinderella like year.

1980-1981 "Close, but no cigar" is the only way to describe the football season this year, as the Gryphons almost tied the Western Mustangs

in a semi-final game in London to force an overtime situation. It was an excellent year for the Gryphons, who ended the regular

season 4-3, good enough for fourth place in the conference. Add to that a convincing win over the College Bowl bound Ottav/a

Gee Gees and you come up with a great year. Following the season, Mike Hudson, Harry Doering, Carmen Sferrazza, Kerry

Hiebert, Andy Balson, Sam Benincasa, Scott Hobson, and Mike Hughes were named All-Conference All-Stars. Hudson then

went on to be named All-Canadian. At the CFL Draft, John Lowe and Jeff Inglis were both drafted by the Toronto Argonauts.

1978-1979 This year’s Gryphons were headed up by long time coach Dick Brown, a man known for his intense , dedicated, and

industrious coaching style. Although the Gryphons’ record of 2-5 left a bit to be desired there were certainly a number

of areas that showed great promise for the 1979 season. All Canadian rookie-of-the-year, John Lowe, will be back for

his second season with the Gryphons. This past season saw him run two straight 200-yard plus games, a feat seldom

accomplished at the intercollegiate level. After dropping two one-sided saes vs. Western and Waterloo, the gryphons

last back to back heart breakers against a vastly improve York squad.

Homecoming was a good day at Guelph as the home team ran up a 28-1 half-time lead and held on to win 29-22 over

McMaster.

1976-1977 For the football Gryphons 1976 was a building year. Graduation losses included All Canadian Bruce Morris, Paul

Whaley, John Kelley, Mike Telepchuk, Craig Holt and a host of others. Faced with this task Head Coach Dick Brown

and his assistants rebuild. Despite a couple of early season losses the club began to put things together later in the year.

A record of two wins and five losses included wins of 10-8 in McMaster and a very satisfying 42-7 Homecoming

triumph over York Yeomen.

Offensively Craig Conklin and Mark Brown turned in outstanding performances while on defense tackle Tom Arnott

enjoyed a fine season. Following the year, Arnott, the team’s captain, was named as the 39th recipient if the Wildman

Trophy along with Brian Anderson and Jim Cotta was selected in the Canadian Football draft of graduating collegians.

With most of this young team scheduled to return for the 1977 season there is optimism in the football future.

1975 – 1976 Gryphon Head Coach does not believe in doing anything halfway. Be it an offensive back teetering illigeally into

motion, a missed block or an unfair or incorrect ruling by an official, Coach Brown expects perfection or the closest

possible substitute, honest effort. Bruce Morris was OUAA Rushing Champion, MVP.

1973- 1974 A revamped offensive system leads the University of Guelph Gryphons into the 1973 season. Coach Dick Brown’s

Gryphons will operate out of a diversified ‘double slotback’ line-up that provides a variety of offensive weapons.

Former All-Starr tackle and Edmonton Eskimo draft choice, Patt Lett (30) returns to the Gryphons after one year

absence. A mobile 225 pounds, Pat will also run at a slotback sport where his experience and solid blocking will be

key assets.

Dave Lane enjoyed a big day along the ground with 139 yards on Sept. 16th to give Guelph a 23-12 victory vs.

McMaster.

1972- 1973 The Gryphons have a solid base for the running attack this season with the return of sophomore halfback Bruce Morris.

Bruce, who led the team in rushing last season, will get lots of help from rookies Dave land and Phil Vandervoort. The

Gryphon defensive unit, as has become traditional, will be strong again in 1972. Tackle Bill Gvoich heads the list of

returnees and will once more anchor the front four. The Gryphons lost homecoming with a 23-3 debacle.

1970-1971 The Gryphon Football squad enjoyed a very successful season in 1970 and came within an eyelash of capturing the

C.C.I.F.C title and advancing into post-season play. Post season honors for the Gryphons included six members of the

Red and Gold names to the C.C.I.F.C all-star team. Tackle Patt Lett and guard Ted McEachern were names to the

offensive team while end Bill Morrison, tackle Bill Pelton and denfisive backs Roger Hunter and Dave Clarke made

the offensive dream team. Morrison and Clarke were subsequently named co-winners of the Wildman Trophy.

Probably the most significant development in the University of Guelpg football program this season is the appointment

of Dick Brown as Head Coach. A former pro cornerback in the Canadian Football League, Dick approaches the game

with the determination and toughness that made him an All-Canadian.

Football at the University of Guelph this season takes a giant step into the future with the opening of the new 4,000 seat

stands in Alumni Stadium.
