1980–81 — A SUPERB SEASON

The Black Bears posted one of the best records in UM history in the ’80–’81 season, winning 11 of 13 duals meets including a victory over Syracuse. Onlylosses were to Dartmouth and Johns Hopkins. Jaret Lizzotte was an outstandingswimmer for Maine in the mid-1990s.After graduation he joined the Mainecoaching staff and works primarily withdivers. His wife, Susan, is assistantcoach of swimming.

Men’s Swimming 34.9

AMERICA EASTCreation of the North Atlantic Conference, later re-named America East, gave Maine swimmers a newconference championship to be vied for on an annual basis. Charter members were Boston and Northeastern Universities and the Universities of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. The U. ofDelaware and Drexel U. became members in 1991. Towson U. became a member in 1995.

Northeastern U. discontinued men’s swimming in 1996. The U.of New Hampshire discontinued men’sswimming in 2006.

The University of Delaware and Drexel and Towson Universities resigned in 2001. Binghamton and Stony Brook Universities became members in 2001. The University of Maryland at Baltimore Countybecame a member in 2003. The U. of Vermont discontinued men’s swimming in 2004.

EASTERN SEABOARD CHAMPIONSHIPSBetween 1978-79 and 1982-83 Maine competed in the annual Eastern Seaboard Swimming and Diving Championships. Maine’s team finishes were: 1978-79, eighth; 1979-80, ninth; 1980-81, eighth; 1981-82,eleventh, and 1982-83, twelth. Top individual performances came at the 1982-83 meet when KevinWright finished second in both the one meter and three meter diving events.

34.12 Men’s Swimming

YANKEE CONFERENCE The Yankee Conference sponsored championship competition in men’s swimming for eight yearsbetween 1972 and 1980. Charter members were the Universities of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts,New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Boston University became a conference member in 1978.The conference folded in 1980.

The 1972-73 champion was based on points scored by each team in a championship meet involving allteams. This meet was held only one year. During the next five seasons, a point system was establishedin which teams received 20 points for each dual meet victory and 30 points for each position relative toother conference members at the annual New England Swimming and Diving Championship Meet. Inthe final two seasons of YC championship competition, the standings were based on the results of dualmeets. Final standings are shown below.

END OF AN ERA

The conclusion of the 1989–90 season marked the end of a remarkable coaching career at the University of Maine. Alan Switzer, only coach of the men’steam since the program’s birth in 1972, retired at season’s end and moved to New Hampshire. In 18 seasons, his teams compiled a record of 137 winsagainst 62 losses (.688) in dual meets, won two New England championships and five Yankee Conference titles. STANLEY WALLACE POOL

Members of Maine swimming teams not only have enjoyed the presence of outstanding coaches over the years, but have been able to swim in an exceptional facility. Constructed under the watchful eye of Athletic Director Hal Westerman in the early 1970s, the pool measures 25 yards by 25 meters,has eight competitive lanes, a 25 x 60 foot diving area, gold medal lane lines, a Colorado automatic timing system and scoreboard, a 22 x 12 foot recordboard, lightning provided by 100 footcandles, 550 balcony seats, 650 deck seats, one and three meter diving boards, pace clocks, and digital video equipment.

RECOGNITION FROM THE STATE OF MAINE

State Senator Dana Devoe (1956 UM grad) presents an official proclamation from the State of Maine to Capt. Jim Ferragher and Coach Alan Switzer inrecognition of the team’s winning of the New England championship in 1978. It was the second New England crown in three seasons for the Black Bears.

The ’87–’88 edition of Maine men’s swimming produced another winning record with six victories in 10 dual meets. 1975–76 — NEW ENGLAND AND YANKEE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS

In only the fourth season of existence, Maine’s men’s swimming team reached a pinnacle of success in the 1975–76 season by winning both the YankeeConference and New England championships. It began a reign of success that included two additional New England titles and four more YankeeConference crowns. A GENEROUS CONTRIBUTION

Maine alumni have donated on a great many occasions to University athletic programs. A generous gift from the Class of 1933 provided Wallace Pool with this expensive and critically important scoreboard, judging and timing system which instantly calculates and displays the running times of racingswimmers in eight lane.

1981–82 — ANOTHER GOOD SEASON

Maine enjoyed another good season in the winter of 1981–82, winning five of eight dual meets and qualifying for the prestigious Eastern SeaboardSwimming and Diving Championships at West Point.
