Taking off to College with the Help of 4-H by by Tanisha Norvell

For years, club leaders have been talking about college and 4-H synonymously; and how a record book will be a big help when it comes time for getting into college. is my 7th year in 4-H and I am living proof that what leaders have been saying IS TRUE. I highly recommend you start and finish your Record Book every year. When it comes time to apply for college, apply for scholarships, secure letters of recommendation, and prepare a college admissions resume, you will be glad you did. Being successful in those areas means being able to talk about all the amazing things you have done while you have been in school; and for me, almost everything I needed

and much of what I had forgotten, was recorded in my Record Book. So take it from me, a high school senior – Make a 4-H Record Book, you’ll be glad you did!

Record Books Record Books

Were you unsure where to place items in the Record Book categories? The Incentives and Recognition Committee will put on an encore PDR Training Saturday, November 17th at the 4-H office in Ukiah from 10 a m until 1 p m. Mark this date on you calendar and please RSVP to 463-4495.

This training will be a hands-on and group oriented. We will welcome adult volunteers, parents, and older members that might be able to help younger members with their record books. We will fill out the Personal Development Report in small groups and then discuss the various answers with the entire group.

We encourage you to consider joining us for this training – this time will be well spent and may prevent some headaches come record book time at the end of the 4-H year.

A 4-H Archery Certification Training for volunteers and junior/teen leaders will be offered Saturday, January 19th, 9 AM – 5 PM, and Sunday, January 20th, 8 AM- 12 noon, at the Livermore-Pleasanton Rod & Gun Club, 4000 Dagnino Road, Livermore, CA 94551 in Alameda County. You must be an enrolled 4-H leader or member and attend both days to receive certification to teach archery at the project, club and camp levels. The course will include a PowerPoint lecture, review of equipment, practice shooting and teaching, and a written test. The cost is $50 per person to include a resource binder, range fees, and Saturday lunch. Overnight RV parking, water & power only, is available for an additional fee.

To register, please complete and mail the “CA 4-H Shooting Sports Training Request and Registration Form” available at http://www.ca4h.org/files/2123.pdf, and an adult or youth 4-H medical release form and a $50 check payable to “De Arroyo 4-H Club” to Jennifer Siders, 4967 Erica Way, Livermore, CA 94550. REDWOOD VALLEY/CALPELLA 4-H

SHAMROCKS 4-H

Hey Again! So as most of you know, Boonville Fair just ended and it was so, so much fun. I had a blast but didn't get a chance to go on any rides because I was so busy. Otherwise, I think people really loved it and had a good time. [Fundraisers] Every October there is a Pumpkinfest in downtown Ukiah. I am really excited because I am going to be helping my mom, Kelly Boesel, with the dog costume contests and races. The rest of our Ukiah 4H Members have a busy weekend planned too – We will be selling pulled pork sandwiches and baked goods at the Farm Supply on Talmage. Nadine Boer who owns the Pumpkin Patch on Boonville Road allows us to sell water and baked goods on the weekends the Pumpkin Patch is open. We will be selling water and baked goods this weekend the 13th and 14th and also the 20th and 21st. [Pumpkinfest Activities] There won't be a petting zoo this year at the Pumpkinfest but the County Council has stepped in to manage the Pumpkin Smashing booth. Pumpkins were provided by Nadine and the money raised will help pay for different things our county needs. You pay $5 to smash a pumpkin and if you find the one with black or green dye you win a big prize (everyone wins something even if you don't fnd any dye). Kathy Schuler has been busy organizing this event. We also have a float in the parade – the theme this years is "Game On" so everyone will be dressing up in their favorite sports costumes. And last, but not least, make sure you check out our window displays in honor of National 4H Week at the Book Company on School St and the Farm Supply. [PR] Many of our projects are underway and I would like to profile some more of what we are doing. Email me your meetings dates and activities or special things you have done so I can include them here! My email is [email protected] [Officer Meeting and Halloween Party] Due to the Halloween Party, our Officer meeting time and location has been changed. We will meet at 2:00 pm on October 28th at Pirate Pete's (Nadine's) Pumpkin Patch. After the meeting, our club is having our 2nd annual Halloween Party 3:00 – 5:00 pm. We will be having super fun games, taking rides on a hay truck, doing a scavenger hunt, eating and enjoying each others costumes. [Record Books] We had most of our members turn in record books. I will list names and awards next month. Record Books going on to County for judging are due Friday October 8th to the 4H Office. Judging will be done the following week. That's all for now – remember to send me your information! (Written By: Ericka Boesel)

On October 9, The Redwood Valley/Calpella 4-H Club had an important although fun meeting. Our previous president, Bobby, handed over the light of his candle to our new president, Natasha Looney, with a hope that the 'spark' would carry on. The other officers passed on their flames along with positive thoughts and support to our new leaders. After all the reports, we played a slightly tricky game where you had to think on your feet and call out each other's names before your opponent called out yours. Everyone was laughing by the end. Then we decided next month there is going to be a contest: the Project with the most canned food gets the mystery prize! We were then reminded of important dates and opportunities to serve in your community: the Eel River Clean up on October 13th, the Pumpkin Fest on October 27th, and our next meeting, on November 13th. See you then!

LONG VALLEY 4-H

POTTER VALLEY4-H

This year The Potter Valley 4-H has a lot of community service options. We are helping Serena Grimm, by giving her backpacks that she will send to a school in Mexico. We also have “Change for Charity,” so if you have some extra change in your pockets at one of the meetings you can put it in a large bottle, and at the end of the 4-H year we will count the change and give it to a chosen charity. In November if you bring five cans of food for the homeless shelter, you will receive a prize and also credit in your record book.

At the beginning of our last meeting, the Club Officers came up with a very fun game to introduce our new members. Potter Valley 4-H is very proud to have 10 new members this year!

We also came up with a theme this year for our club. The theme is “Celebrating 100 Years Of 4-H.” The Officers are going to plan a bunch of fun activities to do at the meetings to go with the theme to celebrate 100 years of 4-H in California. We also worked on a window display that was put up at the Potter Valley Youth and Community Center to celebrate National 4-H week.

Potter Valley 4-H Store is back. Every meeting we have a question such as, “What do the 4 H's stand for?” If you answer correctly you get a 4-H buck that can be used in the store. You can also get 4-H bucks by listening and paying attention, and standing up and talking during the meetings. If you save all your bucks you can buy something big like a belt buckle. But you can also spend it and get small things like gum and 4-H bracelets.

Potter Valley is offering a lot of cool projects this year. Some of them are: Cloverbuds, Pygmy Goats, Woodworking, Sewing, Cooking, Poultry, Dairy Cattle, Horse, Beef, Sheep, Swine, and more.

The Eel River Clean-up was very fun and successful, and the lunch was delicious! I hope more people will come and help next year.

I hope everyone's year is going well! (Written By: Katie Penry)
