Falls student recognized for Badger State honor
BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
Menomonee Falls High School seniorIsabelle Abbott learned more about gov-ernment while participating in the BadgerGirls State program over the summer.
Badger Girls State is a programthrough the American Legion Auxiliary inwhich participants learn about leadershipin government. The week-long programover the summer includes an election, andAbbott was elected "Superintendent of Schools" during Badger Girls State. Abbottwas recognized by the Menomonee FallsSchool Board during a "finest" presenta-tion at the Sept. 28 board meeting.
Abbott recently introduced StateSuperintendent of Public Instruction TonyEvers during his "State of the State"address in the Capitol Rotunda.
"Isabelle did a phenomenal job," highschool Principal Cory Golla added."Everybody around us commented thatshe did not miss a beat at all, it was apowerful introduction."
Abbott explained the Badger State pro-gram "is just as local and state govern-
ment would be, except it's at hyper-speed." She said the first day involvedlearning about local government as citi-zens and learning how to be American cit-izens. She said she had the idea of run-ning for the "governor" post at the event, but opted against it.
"I have more of a passion for educa-tion," Abbott said."A conversation of edu-cation was a large one at Badger GirlsState. Instead of talking about it, I want-ed to do something."
She explained the entire "election"involves a speech to those in attendance. She said she learned different aspects of being a citizen and a voice in government.
"Not just sitting back and lettingthings happen, but participating in itfully," Abbott said.
Being part of the process is nothingnew for Abbott, as she was the student rep-resentative on the School Board last year.
She introduced her parents Christopherand Nata, adding "they are supportive inall of my aspirations.
"They're the coolest people I know,"she said.

NOTICE TO MENOMONEE FALLS WATER CUSTOMERS
FLUSHING OF WATER MAINS
The Menomonee Falls Water Utility will be cleaning and flushing water mains from7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. beginning October 12th and continuing through October30th. The flushing will remove most of the natural minerals that have settled in themains such as iron, a harmless-reddish brown mineral that discolors the water.
If you observe the Water Utility personnel working in your area, refrain from usingwater or use as little as possible for one-half to three-quarters of an hour to insurethat the water has settled in the mains. This will also help prevent any iron frombeing drawn into your water piping system.
If you do find that your water has become discolored, refrain from using it for anadditional one-half to three-quarters of an hour. Then draw off the remaining dis-colored water through the COLD WATER FAUCET ONLY.
Your cooperation during this flushing procedure will benefit all water customers.

"We just wanted to take this oppor-tunity to mark that occasion and tocelebrate the many open and willinghearts that serve with Habitat forHumanity," Pfaff said.
The house being constructed inJackson is a side-by-side that will servetwo families. Pfaff noted that Habitatwill provide the mortgage, which isbased on the families income. Drs. Richard and Bruce Winte
Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told by mydentist to have laser surgery to fix my gumdisease. Can you comment on whether this issafe and if it is better than the deep cleanings Ihave been getting for years?
Dear Jan, we now have a CO2 Superpulsedlaser at Hampton Dental Associates. The CO2laser is the most widely studied laser on themarket today with the most University
supported articles outlining their safety andeffectiveness. I can tell you that lasers arewonderful tools in dentistry if they are usedcorrectly. The ADA Council on ScientificAffairs has recently published a position paperon lasers and how they are used in dentistry. Some of the salient points of their paper are asfollows:
“There are currently more than twentycleared indications for use for dental lasers inthe United States.
According to the ADA position paper: “Thedental literature indicates that when “lasers” areused as an adjunct to meticulous root planing, mechanical or chemical curettage (i.e., theintentional removal of the epithelial lining of the sulcus) (lasers) offer no consistent benefitbeyond scaling and root planing alone withrespect to gain of the periodontal attachment.
Additional clinical data from properlydesigned clinical trials with adequate sample
sizes are still required before it can be known towhat extent LANAP (Laser assisted newattachment procedures) are safe and effectiveacross the spectrum of patients with chronicperiodontitis.”
So while lasers can be used for removinglesions, performing frenectemies (removingtissue that holds tongues or lips down) andmany other soft tissue applications it has notbeen found to definitively treat gum disease. If our readers wish to be seen for evaluation of
soft tissue problems, melanin premoval, frenectemies or evaluatitreatment of gum problems we invite call us for an examination at 414-464-

The winner of the Germantown-Whitefish BaySept. 25 was decided on the very last play.
Trailing 24-21 after Whitefish Bay took the leadwith 2:47 left in the game on a 26-yard field goal byBailey Wieland, Germantown mounted a final drivethat got to the Blue Dukes 10-yard line. With 6 sec-onds left, Germantown's Nate Seymour threw to JackBrzkala in the corner of the end zone, but Bay'sMichael Kirkendoll intercepted the pass.
"You can't ask for a better position to be in at theend of the game than that," Germantown Coach JakeDavis said. "It happens. We've been here and it's hap-pened to us before. That's football -- that's what thisgame is and we knew it was going to be like that."
The final play gave Whitefish Bay a 4-0 NorthShore Conference record while Germantown fell into atie with Cedarburg and Homestead with a 3-1 confer-ence record. Germantown was to host Cedarburg Oct.2.
Whitefish Bay had a 14-0 lead early in the secondquarter following 5- and 2-yard runs by VanBassindale. Germantown mounted a drive late in thesecond quarter that ended with a 4-yard run into theend zone by Seymour. Germantown then mounteddrives in the third quarter that ended with a 1-yardrun by Austin Mozdzen and a 2-yard run by Seymourto give the Warhawks 21-14 lead heading into thefourth quarter.
But the field position changed in Bay's favor on along punt that gave Germantown possession insidetheir own 20-yard line and the Blue Duke's defenseforced a punt, setting up a Whitefish Bay drive thatended on a 50-yard pass play from Jake Fisher toChristopher Caspari with 8:44 remaining. WhitefishBay's defense again stopped Germantown and the Blue
Dukes were mounting a final drive that stalled, lead-ing to the field goal by Wieland and setting the stagefor the final moments of the game.
"I was happy with the way they fought," Davissaid." We were down 14-0, just like last year, and theyfought back the same. That's what we've got to con-tinue to build on, those kinds of moments, and keeprising. We've just got to be able to start better than wedid and get after it."
Menomonee Falls 37, West Allis Central 13: MikeConrardy picked up a Central fumble and returned it
32-yards at the 5:15 mark of the first quaMenomonee Falls. Bryce McMurtry of Menomoncompleted 10 of 16 passes for 190 yards whrunning 10 times for 131 yards and one touch
With the win, Menomonee Falls improves tthe Greater Metro Conference and 3-3 overall.
Hamilton 20, West Allis Hale 14: Michaeran eight times for 64 yards and two touchdoHamilton. Sam Herriges scored the Chargertouchdown. Hamilton improved to 2-2 in the Metro Conference and 2-4 overall.

The Menomonee Falls School Boardgot a first look Sept. 28 at its short-term borrowing that will occur towardthe end of this year.
Jeff Gross, director of businessservices, explained that the borrowingoccurs by districts to meet cash flowneeds until tax receipts arrive inJanuary. Gross said that while the
district has a fund balance around 20percent, it runs to zero at the end of November. The borrowing is paid backin February.
Gross noted that the district usedto engage in borrowing for nine
months but has reduced that to fourmonths, as cash reserves have beenbuilt up.
The district will be borrowing $4.5million, which is $250,000 more thanlast year. Gross said the district is get-ting less state aid than last year andthe district needed more to cover theshortfall. He said the district is pool-
ing its borrowing with five other dis-tricts to get a better rating fromMoody's Investor Service and to makeit more appealing to investors.
The School Board will take finalaction on the request Oct.12.
