When Menomonee Falls residentKathleen Binder was diagnosed with Stage

3 breast cancer in October 2012, she wasnot entirely surprised. My mother passed away from breast

cancer in 2001 so I had an idea it was apossibility, she said. But still, it was some-thing I did not want to accept.

The now-56-year-old first noticed some-thing was awry in September 2012, eventhough her mammogram that February hadbeen fine. She waited a month to go getthings checked outan approach she doesnot recommend.

I would highly advise against spend-ing a month not knowing whats going onwith your body, she said.

Once diagnosed that November,Binderwho received treatment at theBreast Center of Community Memorial

Hospitalbegan an arduous journey ofchemotherapy that went on for more thansix months.

That was very hard because I was stillworking, said Binder, who continues towork out of Froedtert Healths WoodlandPrime billing office in the village.

In June 2013 Binder underwent a dou-ble mastectomy and began a lighter courseof chemotherapy that lasted for a year. InMay 2014, she began the reconstructionprocess and she continues with physicaltherapy to avoid further lymphedema, fluidretention that has affected her armsbecause of the surgery.

Since (the surgery) I have been good, very good! she said. I feel like I have got-

ten the majority of my strength back and I

am happy with the results of the reconstruc-tion.

She is also, finally, able to take aproverbial deep breath.

My oncologist said I am curednot inremission, cured, she said. He said this isbecause I was in Stage 3. In Stage 4 youare always in remission.

Binder, who is a born-again Christian, said she had to rely on her faith and thekindness of family and friends during thistrying time.

This has strengthened my faith and mytrust in God and has made me a happierperson overall, she said. I am single so inthe beginning I was worried about whowould help me out, but my friends andchurch (Crossway in Germantown) werethere for me. They were so encouraging.

She especially credits her friend JanetKenny and sister Karen Passailaigue, whocame from California to live with Binder for

a few months. They were a huge help in my recoveryprocess, said Binder.

Being asked to participate in theCommunity Memorial Foundations fashionshow for Breast Cancer Awareness Monthwas a pleasant surprise.

I love clothes and I love dressing up,she said. This is such a perfect fun eventand it is one of the first really great things tocome out of (my battle against cancer). Iam so happy they are honoring the gals!

Binder said it has been a tough road, but she always felt safe knowing she was inGods hands while receiving excellentcare from every doctor, nurse and caregiv-er at Froedtert, mostly through CommunityMemorial Hospital.

The Menomonee Falls Village Boardgave final approval Oct. 20 for the vacationof a portion of Hayes Avenue north ofRoosevelt Drive.

That portion of the road was proposedto be vacated with property turned over toadjacent property owners as part of overallchanges to the area, which includes thevacation of the portion of Pershing Avenuethat connects with Hayes Avenue. The over-all plans for land north of Roosevelt Driveinclude the completion of Falls Parkway andthe development of the White Stone VillageApartments.

The item was tabled at the previousVillage Board meeting after an adjacent res-ident spoke against the request. Both resi-dents who have properties on the north sideof Hayes Avenue have driveway access toRoosevelt Drive but the front entrances to theresidences are along Hayes Avenue.

During the Oct. 20 Village Board meet-ing, Public Works Director Arlyn Johnsonsaid adjacent residents were concernedwith parking and the tax implication of hav-ing the road land divided between the own-ers.

Johnson said the residents could retaintheir current Hayes Avenue addresses formailing purposes or changed to a RooseveltDrive address.

Johnson said that once Falls Parkway isconnected all the way from Water Street toPilgrim Road, the village could considerallowing parking on both sides of RooseveltDrive.

Johnson later said that one propertyowner would wind up paying $70.30 inadditional taxes while the other propertyowner would pay $94.35 in property tax asa result of the Hayes Avenue land beingvacated to the adjacent properties.

Johnson said that keeping HayesAvenue north of Roosevelt Drive and creat-ing a stub street would be a concern interms of snow and ice removal. Accordingto Johnson, there would be no way turnaround a plow vehicle, which would requirea plow vehicle to back out onto RooseveltDrive.

Its just a lot of potential problems, hesaid.

Trustee Steve Raymonds said if the vil-lage will take the road out, parking on bothsides of the Roosevelt Drive would be need-ed. Trustee Bonnie Lemmer added that if thevillage will that portion of remove HayesAvenue, there should be a walkway to con-nect to the current front entrances. Johnsonsaid installing sidewalk adds responsibilityto the private property owner.

As long as theres some way to get tothe places, Raymonds added.

Trustee Katie Kress she is on bocreating a sidewalk that would cothe residences front entrances. Thapproved an amendment offeroption to both residents.

By Ronda AddyBelts and hoses are important compo-

nents in your vehicle. If something goeswrong with them, you will have problems.By paying attention to the belts and hoses, you can help keep your vehicle running itsbest. You don't need to hire a professionalto check your belts and hoses. You can doit yourself. You just need to make sure theengine is cold.

Belts operate the alternator, powersteering pump, water pump and air condi-tioner compressor. It is important to startwith a visual inspection of the belts and atesting of the tension. Look for cracking, fraying or missing pieces, all of which war-rant a replacement. To get an accuratereading of a belt's tension, you need a belttension gauge. If you don't have one ofthese, you can check the tension bydepressing the belt along its longest straightsection. If it deflects one-half to one inch, the tension is good.

There are various types of belts. Here isa brief description of some of them, alongwith some maintenance tips: The drive beltor fan belt powers the power steeringpump, air injection pump, air conditioningcompressor and mechanical cooling fan. There are two types: the V-belt and the ser-pentine belt. The belts should be checkedwhen the oil is changed. Look for signs ofcracking (random cracks on the ribs of aserpentine belt are normal and don'trequire an immediate replacement), missingpieces, splitting or separating layers. Thetiming belt keeps the crankshaft andcamshaft synchronized, which, in turn, keeps the valve operation matched to theposition of the pistons. There are someengines in which the belt operates otherparts, such as the water and oil pump andbalance shafts. For this, manufacturers usu-ally have a recommended mileage forreplacement. Failure to follow this recom-mendation could result in major enginedamage. Because it is easier to access thewater pump, tensioning pulleys and timingbelt sprockets when the timing belt isremoved, you may want to consider replac-ing these parts as well.

After checking the belts, you may checkthe hoses-the radiator hoses (upper andlower), heater hose and bypass hose. Lookfor small leaks, and if you find some, useduct tape as a temporary patch. If you

notice the upper radiator hose has col-lapsed, you have a defective radiator pres-sure cap that will need to be replaced. Testthe heater and radiator hoses by firmlysqueezing them. If they are hard, make acrunching sound, are extremely soft orsticky, or are covered with oil, they need tobe replaced.

You should check the coolant hosestwice a year, in the spring and fall. You alsoneed to check the hose connections, butonly when the engine is warm. Drive thevehicle around for a while and then pop thehood. If you see swollen spots in thecoolant hoses, this indicates areas of weak-ness and the hoses need to be replaced. You should also check for cold leaks. Thesegenerally seal themselves when the hosesget warm and expand, so wait until theengine has cooled and look for dry coolantcracks or small damp spots down the radi-ator, thermostat housing, hose ends or fire-wall.

By Tresa EricksonMost of us know that regular main-

tenance is key to a well-running vehi-cle. That's why we get our oilchanged, have our tires rotated and soforth. Another important part of theregular maintenance schedule is thetune-up. Because the internal workingsof vehicles have changed so muchover the years, the definition of a tune-up may vary from the simple replace-ment of spark plugs to the completeoverhaul of several areas within thevehicle.

Most experts agree that the besttune-ups involve an inspection of sev-eral areas, including the battery, engine mechanical, powertrain con-trol, fuel, ignition and emissions. Not

every shop defines a tune-up in thisway, however. Generally, the moreinvolved the tune-up, the more it costs.

When scheduling a tune-up, it isimportant that you find out what it willentail and how much it will cost. Bewary of really low estimates; chancesare the shop is pushing for your busi-ness and the final bill for the tune-up

The monitor works by using either acamera to detect lane markers whenmonitoring a driver's ability to stay intheir lane or infrared cameras to detecteye motions and compute the driver'strends. Drivers are kept alert, which helpskeep them and others on the road safe.

The all-weather/night vision or visionenhancement system provides driverswith information about objects in a vehi-cle's path that cannot normally be seenat night or under adverse conditions.Through radar, infrared lights or a receiv-er in front of the vehicle, data is fed into

a computer that processes the informa-tion and then creates a displayed imagein front of the driver. Data gathered fromradar or infrared receivers mounted onthe front of a vehicle is processed, and ifsomething is detected, an image is dis-played in front of the driver. Safety ismuch improved during adverse or night-time conditions.

While this technology sounds likemajor leaps forward, someday it too willbe outdated and future drivers will bethinking how could those people possiblyget by without such and such.
