Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team returns home to the Charles L.Sewall Center and opens a two-game homestand Thursday night when it welcomes Quinnipiacfor a 7:00 p.m. tilt in a Northeast Conference game. The Colonials are coming off a 68-53 setback@ Central Connecticut State (1/7/12), RMU’s first conference loss of the season, to wrap up a five-game road swing. Robert Morris posted a record of 3-2 (.600) during its road swing, with redshirtjunior guard Velton Jones leading the Colonials during the trip with averages of 11.6 points, 4.6assists and 2.2 steals per game. Against the Blue Devils, redshirt junior forward Russell Johnsonpaced RMU with 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while freshman forward Lucky Jonesnotched his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 caroms. Robert Morris closes out itshomestand Saturday, Jan. 14, with a 7:00 p.m. contest against Sacred Heart after hosting the Bob-cats Thursday night.

Quick Stat of the Night - Robert Morris is coming off its first Northeast Conference loss of the2011-12 campaign with a 68-53 setback @ Central Connecticut State (1/7/12), but one thing theColonials have done extremely well this season is bouncing back from a defeat. RMU enters Thurs-day’s tilt against Quinnipiac with a record of 4-0 so far this season when playing after a loss, andRMU has also won five straight dating back to last season when playing after a defeat. It has beenalmost a full calendar year since Robert Morris has suffered back-to-back losses, and it cameagainst RMU’s opponents this week. When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coachof the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 30-19 (.612).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a programin 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has beenaccomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournamentcrowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said.“Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the rightdirection.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659),with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league oppositionand enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting toplayer development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayetteto the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) beforetransferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt.Lebanon, Pa.

RMU’s Last Game - The Central Connecticut State trio of Robby Ptacek, Kyle Vinales and KenHorton combined for 63 points to help lead the Blue Devils to a 68-53 victory over Robert Mor-ris, Jan. 7, in a Northeast Conference tilt at Detrick Gymnasium. The loss concluded a five-gameroad swing in which RMU posted a record of 3-2. In a first half that featured six ties and eightlead changes, Central Connecticut State took a 32-28 halftime advantage by closing the firsthalf on a 15-9 surge. Ptacek scored eight points during the run and produced 14 of his game-high 24 points before intermission as the Blue Devils connected on 57.1 percent (12-for-21) oftheir shots in the first half, including 50 percent (4-for-8) from beyond the arc. CCSU openedthe second half on a 7-2 spurt to take a 39-30 lead as Ptacek scored five points, including athree-pointer. Robert Morris responded with an 8-3 run to close its deficit to 41-38, but theColonials couldn't overcome a shooting percentage of 30.3 percent (20-for-66) on the game,including a 1-for-12 performance from redshirt junior guard Velton Jones. Sophomore forwardMike McFadden pulled RMU within a possession, 41-38, with a layup with 12:19 to play, butCentral Connecticut State scored the game’s next seven points to open up a 48-38 lead. Thebiggest advantage of the contest for the Blue Devils came with 1:38 remaining, when Vinaleshit a pair of free throws to give CCSU a 68-50 lead. Ptacek, Horton and Vinales combined toshoot 47.6 percent (20-for-42) from the field, including 44.4 percent (8-for-18) from beyondthe arc. Robert Morris Quick FactsKeep It On the Down Low - Robert Morris returned to Northeast Conference play bysplitting a pair of games in New England last week, and despite a 68-53 setback @ Cen-tral Connecticut State (1/7/12), the Colonials continue to hold serve on defense. Sincethe beginning of December, RMU owns a record of 8-3 (.727) and has not allowed any oftheir last 11 opponents to reach the 70-point plateau. RMU has yielded an average of59.4 points per contest over that span, and the streak of 11 straight games of not allowingat least 70 points in a game is a new school record. The 2008-09 Colonials turned thetrick in eight straight games, including their final five regular-season contests and threevictories in the 2009 NEC Tournament en route to their sixth league championship.

Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last five sea-sons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since thebeginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 78-13 (.857) whenthe Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 74-11 (.871) markwhen outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMUhas posted a record of 22-7 (.759) when outrebounding its opponent, including a markof 8-3 (.727) in 2011-12. RMU hosts Quinnipiac Thursday leading the circuit in rebound-ing defense, allowing an average of just 30.6 caroms per contest. Over their last 11 con-tests, the Colonials own a rebounding margin of +8.3, including six times over thatstretch posting a rebounding margin of at least +13.

Freebies - Despite having his streak of 19 straight games scoring in double figuressnapped by finishing with seven points @ Memphis (12/29/11), a key reason redshirt jun-ior guard Velton Jones was able to put together that streak is his ability to get to thefree-throw line. In a 68-53 setback @ Central Connecticut State (1/7/12), Jones finished2-for-2 at the stripe against the Blue Devils and on the 2011-12 campaign is 86-for-116at the chalk, a success rate of 74.1 percent that ranks 14th in the Northeast Conference.Jones, who is averaging 6.8 visits to the free-throw line and 5.1 free throws made pergame so far this season, is on pace to establish a new Robert Morris single-season recordfor free throws. The record of 151 is held by former Colonial Gabe Jackson (1992-95), whoestablished the mark as a senior in 1994-95. Based on his current averages, Jones is onpace to finish with 157 free throws in 2011-12, and he enters Thursday’s game againstQuinnipiac ranked 12th all-time at RMU in career free throws made with 276.

Four Score and ... In a 64-54 win over Hampton (12/20/11), Robert Morris had four play-ers reach double figures in scoring as redshirt junior guard Velton Jones paced the Colo-nials with 18 points. Joining Jones was freshman forward Lucky Jones (16), sophomoreforward Mike McFadden (11) and redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams (10). In eightof RMU’s 14 games so far this season, four Colonials have scored in double figures, withRobert Morris owning a record of 6-2 (.750) in those contests. In the two seasons AndrewToole has been the head coach at Robert Morris, the Colonials are 12-5 (.706) when atleast four players score in double figures in a game.

The Daytona 500 - Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson has been RMU’s most con-sistent rebounder over the last three years, and he continues to produce on the glass in2011-12. Through the first 17 games of the year, Johnson has grabbed 95 boards, an av-erage of 5.6 per game that ranks second for the Colonials. The program’s active leadingrebounder with 483 career caroms, Johnson is looking to become the 16th player inschool history to join the 500-rebound club and the first since former Colonial JeremyChappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2008-09 campaign. Johnson entersRMU’s two-game homestand just 17 rebounds shy of joining the 500-rebound club andowns a season-high of nine rebounds on two occasions.

30-for-30 - Robert Morris has made a point to attack the basket in the early portion ofthe 2011-12 campaign, and the results are encouraging. In a 72-64 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette (12/17/11), the Colonials tied a season high by visiting the charity stripe 35times, converting 26 (74.3 percent). RMU has now won 34 consecutive games when vis-iting the charity stripe at least 30 times in a game. The last loss for the Robert Morriscame in the 2002 NEC Tournament, when the Colonials suffered an 85-76 loss to UMBC(3/1/02) despite going 24-for-31 (77.4 percent) at the chalk. Through its first 17 gamesof the 2011-12 campaign, RMU is averaging 23.1 free-throw attempts per contest.

Luck of the Draw - Freshman forward Lucky Jones has been a consistent presence onthe glass for Robert Morris in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign, as he entersThursday’s game against Quinnipiac leading RMU in rebounds with 105, an average of6.2 per contest. Jones is coming off his first career double-double with 11 points and 11caroms @ Central Connecticut State (1/7/12) and in four games against league foes sofar this season is averaging a league-best 4.0 offensive rebounds per game. He is alsoproving to be an adept free-throw shooter, as he enters Thursday’s game with a conver-sion rate of 82.8 percent (48-for-58) at the chalk, which ranks third in the NortheastConference.

Return Of The Mack - Robert Morris received a boost to its lineup when sophomore for-ward Mike McFadden, a transfer from Iona, became eligible to play for the Colonialsafter sitting out a year due to NCAA transfer rules. McFadden made his RMU debut in a72-64 win over Louisiana-Lafayette (12/17/11), supplying 13 points and six rebounds. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three sea-sons, as the redshirt junior enters Saturday’s game owning the longest active streak forboth games played and games started. Jones has played in 84 straight games for RMUdating back to the 2009-10 campaign and has earned 69 straight starts. Jones owns 79career starts overall, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Even with second-year head coachAndrew Toole on the sidelines, RMU’s attention to detail on defense hasn’t changed. De-spite a 68-53 setback @ Central Connecticut State (1/7/12) to close out a five-game roadtrip, Robert Morris still owns a record of 77-16 (.828) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points.

More Defense For Your Pleasure - Robert Morris is led by second-year head coach An-drew Toole, who will coach his 50th game Thursday against Quinnipiac and owns anoverall record of 30-19 (.612). In his 49 games on the sidelines, RMU has held its oppo-nents to 70 points or less in 36 contests, an amazing 73.5 percent of the time. The Colo-nials are 26-10 (.722) in those games, and overall since the beginning of the 2007-08season, when Toole joined former head coach Mike Rice’s staff, Robert Morris has held60.8 percent (93-of-153) of its opponents under the 70-point plateau.

The Charles L. Sewall Center

Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at theCharles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 andnamed for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tourna-ment champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in thelast 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NECTournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No.2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed FairleighDickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Se-wall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fanspacked into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St.Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green(2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift theColonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morriswomen’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament champi-onships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for ThreeOver the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris havebecome synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still topsin the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game.Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.07 three-pointers percontest, ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.06 three-pointers a game. In 2010-11, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, while redshirtfreshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48.
