THIS WEEK IN CONFERENCE USA

WEEKLY AWARDS - JANUARY 11Marshall senior James Kelly earned his second C-USA Player of the Week honor, while Charlotte’s Jon Davis claimed his fi rst C-USA Freshman of the Week award of the season for games through Jan. 10. Kelly averaged a dou-ble-double for the week totalling 51 points in two games, including 33 against FIU, and back-to-back 15-rebound performances. Davis scored a career-high 24 points against Louisiana Tech and tallied 16 of 18 points in the second half to help Charlotte rally to a road win at Southern Miss. Awards are chosen by a vote from a media panel representing the 14 member schools.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JAMES KELLY / MARSHALL / Senior / 6-7 / F / Ann Arbor, Michigan

Kelly posted his third consecutive double-double (and conference-best eighth on the season) in a 99-81 victory over FIU on Jan. 9, scoring 33 points and grabbing a career-high-tying 15 rebounds. That was his second 30-point-plus performance of the season and Kelly averaged a double-double for the week with 25.5 points and 15 rebounds. Kelly scored 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in Thursday’s 90-67 win over Florida Atlantic. He currently leads C-USA with 10.0 rebounds per game and is second in scoring with 18.9 points per game as the only C-USA player to average a double-double on the season. For the week, he shot 62.5 percent (20-of-32) from the fi eld and a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Kelly’s performance boosted the Herd to post 90 or more points in three consecutive conference wins for the fi rst time since January 1995 in the Southern Conference under Billy Dono-van. He also helped extend MU’s home win streak to six games, tying a mark from last season, and to nine games against conference opponents. This is Kelly’s second C-USA Player of the Week honor of the season (Dec. 28).

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

JON DAVIS / CHARLOTTE / 6-2 / G / Upper Marlboro, Maryland

Davis registered two double-fi gure scoring games as well as his fi rst career 20-point scoring eff ort this past week. He netted a game-high 18 points, with 16 coming in the second half, as the 49ers overcame a fi ve-point halftime defi cit to defeat Southern Miss on the road Jan. 7. He also dished out fi ve assists in the game. Davis then recorded his fi rst career 20-point outing with 24 points to go along with six assists at Louisiana Tech on Jan. 9. Again Davis came up big after the break with 19 of his 24 points scored in the second half or overtime period. He notched the 49ers’ fi nal four points of regulation, including the game-tying basket on an acrobatic layup with 17 seconds left in regulation, as the 49ers overcame a four-point defi cit with under a minute left in the LA Tech game to send the game into overtime. For the week, he averaged 21 points, 5.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds. For the season, he aver-ages 9.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. This is the fi rst C-USA Freshman of the Week accolade for Davis, but back-to-back honors for Char-lotte after teammate Andrien White won last week.

THIS WEEK IN CONFERENCE USAAfter snapping the nation’s second-longest home court win streak by de-feating Louisiana Tech on the Bulldogs’ home fl oor last week, Old Dominion now prepares to put its 32-game home streak on the line. The Monarchs will host defending C-USA champion UAB at the Ted Constant Convocation Cen-ter this Thursday, while Middle Tennessee is scheduled to visit on Saturday. UAB rides in to Norfolk, Virginia, on a 10-game win streak of its own and a perfect 3-0 mark in conference play. The Blazers currently rank third in the conference for scoring off ense (79.6 ppg) and second in defense (66.8). ODU tops that defensive category and is ranked sixth nationally, holding op-ponents under 60 points per game (59.8). Thursday night’s game tips at 7 p.m. ET and will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

Marshall is tied atop the early C-USA standings with UAB at 3-0. The Herd leaves the friendly confi nes of the Cam Henderson Center for a 7 p.m. CT tip at North Texas Thursday. Reigning Player of the Week James Kelly has reg-istered a double-double in all three of Marshall’s conference outings and is the only C-USA player to average a double-double with 18.9 points and 10.0 rebounds on the season.

ASN has another C-USA doubleheader lined up for Thursday night, begin-ning at 7 p.m. ET when Florida Atlantic hosts Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 73-71 victory over Old Dominion. Junior guard Khari

Price tossed in 20 points in the win, while senior transfer Kourtlin Jackson added 13 points and seven rebounds for Southern Miss.

The ASN nightcap originates from Houston, Texas, as Rice hosts WKU in a game that features some of the best young talent in the league. The Owls boast two of the league’s top scorers in freshman Marcus Evans (19.9 ppg, fi rst) and sophomore Egor Koulechov (17.8 ppg, fourth). WKU has been paced by sophomore forward Justin Johnson, who ranks sixth in C-USA for both scoring (17.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.1 rpg). He also maintains an eye-popping 66.9 fi eld goal percentage on the season to rank fi fth nationally.

Middle Tennessee heads off to Charlotte for its second conference road game of the campaign. The teams met twice last season, with the Blue Raid-ers gaining a three-point edge to win both, but the games were played in Murfreesboro and Birmingham, respectively.

FIU hosts Louisiana Tech Thursday in the fi rst time the teams have met in Miami as C-USA foes. It also marks somewhat of a homecoming for LA Tech head coach Eric Konkol. Before taking the reigns for the Bulldogs, Konkol spent the previous four seasons as an assistant coach across town at the University of Miami. Tipoff for both games is 7 p.m. ET and each can be seen on the C-USA Digital Network.

UTEP and UTSA are idle Thursday but will meet at 3 p.m. CT Saturday in San Antonio, Texas. The game will be televised on ASN. The 2016 C-USAChampionship will be held March 8-12 in Birmingham, Alabama.

COACHES CORNER

COACHING RECORDSC-USA boasts some tremendous head coaches, combining for more than 2,500 career wins. UTEP head coach Tim Floyd has 441 wins within the col-lege ranks and another 90 in the NBA. WKU’s Ray Harper reached career win No. 400 on Dec. 29, 2014. Old Dominion’s Jeff Jones earned his 400th career victory during the 2015 NIT, while Middle Tennessee’s Kermit Davis, who picked up his 250th win with the Blue Raiders during the semifi nals of the 2015 C-USA Championship, needs only two more to reach No. 400.

Many coaches were also outstanding student-athletes themselves. Jones helped his alma mater Virginia to the 1981 NCAA Final Four. Charlotte’s Mark

Price enjoyed a stellar 12-year NBA career and fi nished his career as one of the greatest shooters in NBA history. UTSA’s Brooks Thompson joins Price in exclusive company as one of just nine D-I head coaches that was an NBA fi rst-round draft selection. Florida Atlantic head coach Michael Curry also played in the NBA. UAB’s Jerod Haase was a Naismith and Wooden Award fi nalist in 1997, his senior year at Kansas. North Texas’ Tony Benford was named the 1986 SWC Tournament MVP as a senior at Texas Tech.

KONKOL JOINS DUNKIN’ DOGSEric Konkol became the 18th head coach at Louisiana Tech and is off to an 13-3 start this season through nonconference play. Konkol arrived in Ruston after spending the past four seasons on Jim Larranaga’s staff at Miami. Prior to that, he was with Larranaga for seven years at George Mason and has assisted in all aspects including recruiting, practices, individual player workouts and game preparation. Known as the team’s off ensive coordinator, he aided the 2014-15 Hurricanes team to a 25-13 record, the second most wins in program history, and an appearance in the NIT Championship game. Miami snapped two impressive winning streaks along the way, defeating eventual national champion Duke, 90-74, at Cameron Indoor Stadium, ending the Blue Devils’ 41-game home winning streak which was the longest active streak in Division I at the time. The Canes also downed then-No. 8/7 Florida in a non-conference battle which snapped the Gators’ 33-game home winning streak, which was the third longest in the country.

2016 CONFERENCE USA CHAMPIONSHIPThe 2016 Conference USA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships return to Birming-ham, Alabama, March 8-12. Host UAB will wel-come teams from the other C-USA member institutions for fi ve full days of competitive basketball action.

Birmingham will host its third C-USA men’s tournament, holding that role last season and in 1999. Thirteen teams will compete in this year’s event, with Southern Miss sitting out due to its self-imposed postseason ban. The fi rst game, between the No. 12 and No. 13 seeds, will be held Tuesday, March 8 at Bartow Arena on the UAB campus at 4 p.m. CT.

The other 11 games of the men’s championship will be held at Legacy Are-na at the Birmingham Jeff erson Convention Complex (BJCC) downtown. Tuesday’s fi rst-round game, along with Wednesday and Thursday action will all be televised by the American Sports Network. The four teams with the best regular-season records in conference play will be seeded 1-4 and will earn a bye to advance directly to Thursday’s quarterfi nals.

CBS Sports Network will carry Friday’s semifi nals, and the men’s title game will be televised nationally on FOX Sports 1, with a 2:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. CT tip time on Saturday, March 11.

PRICE A NOMINEE FOR HALL OF FAME ENSHRINEMENTCharlotte 49ers men’s basketball coach Mark Price, who was a four-time NBA All-Star during his stellar NBA playing career, has been nominated for enshrinement into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfi eld, Massachusetts. The list of candidates has a 49ers fl avor as former Charlotte head coach Lee Rose, who guided the 49ers to the 1976 NIT Finals and the 1977 NCAA Final Four, is also a candidate.

Price, who is in his fi rst season as the 49ers head coach, enjoyed a standout 12-year NBA career. He fi nished his career as one of the greatest shooters in NBA history; he ranks second on the NBA’s all-time career free-throw percentage list (.904) and 29th in three-point fi eld goal percentage (.402). Price was the 25th overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft and played in 772 regular-season games for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Washington Bullets, Golden State Warriors and Orlando Magic. He averaged 15.2 points and 6.7 assists in his career. Price was also a member of Dream Team II, which won the gold medal at the 1994 FIBA World Championship. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Georgia Tech have retired his No. 25 jersey.

ODU’S JONES MANAGES HEALTHOld Dominion head coach Jeff Jones announced in June that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He spent the summer in treatment and his assistants handled his recruiting duties on the road so he could focus on his health. Jones has been on the sidelines for the Monarchs and is expected to maintain his role as head coach throughout the season. Jones also servesas the NABC First Vice President. Samaritan’s Feet International selectedJones as the 2015 “Barefoot Coach of the Year.” Jones has coached a game barefoot for the past seven basketball seasons as head coach at both ODU and American University.

SHOOTING STARS

BLOCKINGHAMUAB has fi ttingly taken on the #Blockingham hashtag as the Blazers currently rank fourth nationally, stopping an average of 6.6 shots per game this season. Sophomore William Lee ranks fi fth on the NCAA Division I individual chart with 3.06 blocks per game himself. Junior Tosin Me-

hinti is averaging 1.13 per game and ranks fi fth on the UAB career blocks chart. Lee sits in seventh place in just his second season as a Blazer.

The current NCAA individual leader in blocked shots also resides in Conference USA. FIU se-nior Adrian Diaz is averaging 3.38 blocks in 16 games to date. Last season, Diaz tied the league single-game record for blocked shots when he cleared 13 shots in the Panthers’ 70-66 win over UAB in the regular-season fi nale for both teams on March 7. He tied the record held by former Marshall standout and 2010 C-USA Freshman of the Year Hassan Whiteside. Diaz became just the 19th player in Division I history to block 13 or more shots in a game.

GOLDEN ANNIVERSARYTexas Western College -- now known as the Uni-versity of Texas at El Paso -- captured the 1966 NCAA championship with a 72-65 upset of top-ranked Kentucky. The game bore tremendous historical signifi cance as the legendary Don Haskins became the fi rst coach to start fi ve black players in the title game. To this day, UTEP re-mains the only Division I school in the state of Texas to win a national championship in men’s basketball. The 50th anniversary of the 1965-66 Miners will be celebrated this season. UTEP will offi cially commemorate that anniversary with a number of events around the men’s basketball game against WKU on Feb. 6. The game will be nationally televised on FOX Sports 1 with a tip-off time of 3 p.m. Mountain.

CONSISTENTThree C-USA student-athletes are ranked among the top 20 nationally for fi eld goal percentage this season. WKU sophomore Justin Johnson

has been an eye-popping 66.9 percent (111-166) from the fi eld through 16 games this season to rank fi fth. FIU senior Adrian Diaz also cracks the top 10, hitting 99-of-149 shots for a 66.4 percent consistency. Another sophomore, in UAB’s Chris

Cokley, ranks 16th nationally at 62 percent (98-158). All three also rank among the league’s top 12 scorers this season.

HOME COOKIN’ Old Dominion took over as the league’s most dominant team at home when the Monarchs snapped Louisiana Tech’s 39-game home court win streak on Jan. 7. ODU has a victory in 32-straight games played at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, which is the fourth-longest in the nation (LA Tech had been tied for second). In C-USA play last year, the Bulldogs, Monarchs and UAB all fi nished the 2014-15 regular season with perfect 9-0 records at home against conference foes. UAB’s win streak of 19 games at Bartow Arena ties the school record and is ranked 12th nationally.

man of Old Dominion, Nigel Snipes of WKU and junior Reggie Upshaw Jr. of Middle Tennessee.

The fi nal roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February. C-USA DIGITAL NETWORKNon-televised coverage of C-USA basketball will be available online through the C-USA Digital Network, available exclusively on the league’s offi cial web-site www.ConferenceUSA.com. C-USA school home games will be off ered live and archived for All-Access subscribers, along with weekly highlights and fea-ture programming.

The C-USA DN also produces the C-USA Showcase, a 30-minute program that runs weekly in the fall and bi-monthly in Janaury, February and March on Fox Sports Network and ASN.

The Digital Network also launched the audio podcast “Talking Conference USA Basketball” four years ago. The fi rst show of the 2015-16 season will air Thurs-day, January 7, following the fi rst weekend of conference play. The program is syndicated throughout the conference’s radio markets and is also available on the league’s offi cial web site, www.ConferenceUSA.com. Host Bill Hazen will also feature basketball news throughout the season on the “Today in Confer-ence USA” - a two-minute program every Monday through Friday.

TWEETEST FANThe Conference USA Tweetest Fan contest tips off its eighth season to win fantastic prizes in conjunction with C-USA men’s and women’s basketball confer-ence play. Once again, C-USA will seek out its Tweet-est Fans, using Twitter to spread all the exciting news coming from the conference and its members.

Prizes will be awarded throughout the conference basketball season to fans who follow and engage with C-USA on Twitter (@Conference_USA). Clues will range from answering trivia questions, posting photos and retweeting, to meeting up with school contacts at remote locations for various prizes and select regular-season game tickets in C-USA communities.

By participating, fans are also registering to win the grand prize: a trip for two to the 2016 Conference USA Basketball Championships, March 8-12 in Birmingham, Alabama. Multiple entries are accepted -- and encouraged -- increasing your chance to win the grand prize package, which includes 2016 C-USA Basketball Championship tickets, air fare and hotel accommodations. The contest runs through Feb. 22, and a winner will be selected through a blind draw on Feb. 23.
