ABOUT THE MEETThe seventh-ranked Fighting Illini men’s gymnastics team welcomes No. 20 Michigan to Huff Hall on Saturday, February 24, for just the second home meet of the season. The Illini fell to the Wolverines in Ann Arbor a year ago, 406.700-404.000. UM enters the weekend with a 1-1 record on the season, defeating Ohio State and falling to No. 1 Oklahoma.

CAREER TITLE COUNTOut of the 23 Illini on the roster, 8 have claimed event titles in their careers. Bobby Baker currently sits with 26 total titles, while Chandler Eggleston has 21. Alex Diab enters the weekend with 24 career titles won and Brandon Ngai has 19, all on pommel horse.

Tyson Bull and Johnny Jacobson have 12 and nine career titles, respectively, and Sebastian Quiana has three titles. Max Diab and Jacob Light each earned their first event title of their career this season and Dennis Minton claimed one event title on still rings in 2016.

2018 WINTER CUP CHALLENGE Five Illini gymnasts traveled to Las Vegas to compete in the annual Winter Cup Challenge, Feb. 15-17. Alex Diab, Joel Diaz, Johnny Jacobson, Jordan Kovach and Brandon Ngai were the athletes in attendance. Diab, Jacobson and Ngai advanced to the finals, with Diab finishing with his 15th career still rings title and Brandon Ngai placing third on pommel horse with scores of 14.650 and 14.400.

LAST TIME OUT The Orange and Blue topped No. 10 Iowa (404.700-401.850) in a road dual meet a week ago, as the Illini won four of the six events, including senior Brandon Ngai’s 18th career pommel horse title.

Sophomore Sebastian Quiana earned his first event title of the season and third of his career with a 14.300 on floor exercise, while junior Alex Diab moved into a tie for 7th place all-time in school history with his 13th career still rings title (14.550). Senior Tyson Bull also picked up his third high bar title of the season and 12th of his career, posting a 14.100.

STRONG SHOWING AT PENN STATE UI traveled to University Park, Pennsylvania, to take on second-ranked Penn State for the first road dual meet of the season. The Illini earned event titles on five events, including junior Alex Diab on floor exercise (14.800) and still rings (14.700), en route to a 412.500- 405.900 victory. At the time, the team

HOME OPENER AGAINST ASUThe Illini came away with a victory over Arizona State in the team’s home opener, as UI defeated the Sun Devils 407.700-387.700 to move to 4-0 on the young season. Senior Bobby Baker won three event titles, while seniors Harry McLellan and Tyson Bull each came away with an event title of their own.

BAKER NAMED B1G CO-GYMNAST OF THE WEEKFollowing an impressive performance against Arizona State, which included three event titles and a then-nation-best 14.900 on vault, senior Bobby Baker was named Big Ten Co-Gymnast of the Week. Baker shared the award with Ohio State’s Sean Melton and it is the fourth-time the Lemont, Illinois, native has earned the recogntion in his Illini career.

OPENING WEEKEND: WINDY CITY INVITATIONALAt the Windy City Invitational three weekends ago, Illinois won the event for the fourth-consecutive time. The victory marked the eighth time the Fighting Illini won the event since it was first held during the 1976-77 season. Illinois has won six Windy City Invitational titles under Justin Spring. 2003 was the last time that the Fighting Illini placed outside of the top two teams in the field. UI has claimed the title in: 1988, 2005, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

CGA PRESEASON COACHES POLLIllinois Men’s Gymnastics placed fifth in the 2017-18 Preseason Coaches Poll, released by the College Gymnastics Association. The Fighting Illini have been ranked in the top five of the preseason poll in eight of the last nine years. Oklahoma, the reigning national champion was picked to repeat, followed by Stanford, Ohio State and Minnesota.

BIG TEN PRESEASON POLLIn the Big Ten Preseason Poll, Illinois was slated to finish third in the league for the fifth-consecutive season. A year ago, the Illini hosted the Big Ten Championships and finished second behind Ohio State. Senior Chandler Eggleston, the 2014 Big Ten Floor Exercise Champion, and Alex Diab, the only two-time Big Ten Still Rings Champion in program history, were named “Gymnasts to Watch” by the conference.

FORMER NATIONAL CHAMPION RETURNSBrandon Ngai returns for his senior year after winning the 2016 national title on pommel horse. Ngai has won 17 career pommel horse event titles, including one this season at the Windy City Invitational.

RETURNING ALL-AMERICANSSpring welcomes back five gymnasts that have garnered fourteen All-America honors over the course of their careers. Redshirt senior Chandler Eggleston (2x Floor, High Bar and Vault) and senior Bobby Baker (All-Around, Still Rings, Vault and Parallel Bars) have each earned the honor four times, while junior Alex Diab (2x Still Rings, High Bar) has earned All-America status three times during his time with the Orange and Blue. Senior Brandon Ngai has earned the honor twice on Pommel Horse and senior Tyson Bull garnered All-America status on High Bar in 2016.

LOOKING AHEADFollowing this weekend’s meet against Michigan, The Illini will get set for Stanford Invite, held in Stanford, California. The meet will begin on Saturday, March 3, at 6 p.m. CT.
