KEYNOTE SPEAKER - REV. DR. ALFONSO WYATT
Rev. Dr. Alfonso Wyatt, is the Founder of Strategic Destiny: Designing Futures
through Faith and Facts. He is also the author of “Mentoring from the Inside Out”,
which was written to help ignite and illuminate the power of mentoring in order to help
more young people have access to caring adults. Rev. Wyatt is a long time mentor and
“elder” statesman to national leaders working in both mentoring
and fatherhood programs. We all know young men and women
and children with great potential and no direction, some are on
the streets, some are about to graduate from high school and
others have simply settled for less. There is an urgent need for
positive influence through mentoring and Rev. Wyatt will share
his power, personal passion and skills for recruiting mentors in
order to help us fill the mentoring gap and support our most
vulnerable youth.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONSCOORDINATORS10:15am - 11:15 amThe Elements of Effective Practice™: A brief overview This session will provide an introduction to the remarkable toolkit, The Elements of Effective Practice™, which serves to assist and inform those wishing to start a quality-based, formally structured mentoring program for children and youth. Appropriate for anyone considering starting a mentoring program or anyone running an existing program who is not familiar with the Elements, this session will also explore the distinction between natural/informal mentoring and the more deliberate, intentional strategy of formally structured mentoring.
Facilitator(s): Dedicated staff and team members from the Mentoring Partnership
Conflict to Connection: The Fundamentals of Nonviolent CommunicationThe Nonviolent Communication (NVC) model presented in this workshop was developed by peacemaker Marshall Rosenberg. Rosenberg’s teachings reflect his understanding that violence begins in the language we use. Similarly, peace is rooted in the way we communicate with each other. This interactive session will introduce the power of NVC to build specific skill sets for connection, even in challenging times. We will experience how our cultural conditioning leads to viewing conflict as something that disconnects us from ourselves and others. Come discover the Universal Human Motivators that drive our every action and how to find our way to connection by focusing on them rather than blame and judgment.
Facilitator: Peggy Smith is a certified trainer with the International Center for Nonviolent Communication and President and Founder of www.OpenCommunication.org
Finding Your Umbrella: Stress Management for ProfessionalsStress impacts on our physical, emotional, and social health. Increasing demands and pressures on professionals today, combined with our ever-changing world have further amped up daily stress for everyone. This workshop will share an overview of the impact of stress on body and mind, and introduce concrete tools, strategies, and tips for both handling the big stresses and dialing down the small stresses so professionals can maintain their own well-being, better preventing burnout and modeling healthy coping skills both for colleagues and the youth we serve. Facilitator: Marianne Esolen, L.C.S.W. Child Champions Network/Counselor, Counseling Consultant, President and Founder of www.doallthegood.com
Flying with Mentors & Mentees: Explore the Cradle of Aviation Join us to find out how the Cradle of Aviation Museum can provide an exciting experience for your mentoring program! Visitors can explore over 150,000 square feet featuring 75 air and spacecraft from a hot air balloon to an actual Lunar Module. Our eight exhibit galleries are in chronological order and throughout the museum our volunteer docents are there to support your learning. There are over 30 hands-on exhibits, half dozen cockpits to climb into, and much more. Discover how your program, youth agency or school can be enriched by what we offer, and how it can spark the imagination of the youth you serve. Facilitator: Marie Ilardi, Scout Coordinator, Cradle of Aviation Museum
2 The Mentoring Partnership of Long Island 150 Motor Parkway Suite LL90 Hauppauge NY 11788 Phone (631) 761-7800 Fax (631) 761-7803 www.mentorkids.org
Program Evaluation: The Simplicity of Creating a Logic ModelMentoring program staff understand the importance of evaluation, but are sometimes unclear as to how to formulate an evaluation plan that will help them measure program goals. This interactive workshop will help programs learn how to develop a “Logic Model” that will showcase measurable processes and program outcomes. Participants will receive a template for this tool that they can immediately begin to use to help strengthen their evaluation plans as well as meet funders request for measurable outcomes.
Facilitator: Marty Martinez, CEO, Mass Mentoring Partnership
The Transformative Power of Affirmation: Helping Youth Positively Cultivating a climate where a child feels affirmed can have a sustaining effect on their sense of self. All too often, our youth encounter circumstances that invalidate them within their families, schools and communities. Participants will dialogue about the challenges and opportunities that arise when attempting to provide an affirming environment through mentoring. This workshop will address some of the issues that negatively impact personal identity and offer creative approaches to mentor-based interventions.
Facilitator: Lisa Zakiya Newland, Ph.D., LCSW-R, CEO, and Founder of Educate 2 Elevate Consultation Services
The Economics of Trust: Building High Quality Relationships What happens in your personal and professional relationships when there is a high degree of trust? How about when trust is low? This session will explore the impact of actively building and leveraging quality relationships as a tool for sustainability in our social service organizations and in our world. Is the "trust factor" real? Can it help us recruit more volunteers? Can we use it to raise more money? Can it help us in preventing burnout? The answer is an unequivocal yes! And in this session, you'll learn how to do it.
Facilitator: Craig A. Bowman, President and Founder, Common Ground Consulting LLC
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONSCOORDINATORS11:30 am - 1:00 pm
Putting it all Together: Mentoring, Family Support & Engagement Strong families are core to the development of healthy children & youth,
schools and communities. There is a growing need to explore new and effective practices to foster meaningful collaborations between
families, schools, and communities that capitalize on the strengths and resources of each. This workshop will briefly explore key elements of family engagement; why it is important to the mentoring experience, and some effective ways to engage families.
Facilitator: Angela M. Zimmerman, M.P.A., Coordinator, Family
Support Long Island @ Molloy College
3 The Mentoring Partnership of Long Island 150 Motor Parkway Suite LL90 Hauppauge NY 11788 Phone (631) 761-7800 Fax (631) 761-7803 www.mentorkids.org
Realizing Our Potential: Creating the Conditions for Success Positive, dependable adults have the power to create the conditions in which young people will come to love learning, value effort, crave challenge and persevere in the face of obstacles. Your mindset, words and actions influence what your mentee believes to be true about him or herself. Find out how we can help young people develop a positive self-concept and believe that they are able, valuable and capable of self-direction.
Facilitator: Joan R. Fretz, Executive Director, International Alliance for Invitational Education. Former school administrator and founder of LI SEL Forum
Mentoring Students with Special Needs: Tools for Channeling Behavior Understanding that behavior and emotion go hand in hand, this session will explore how both aspects must be addressed when working on interventions and practices to improve outcomes for children and youth with behavioral needs. Through video and discussion of the theory of Applied Behavior Analysis, participants will learn the primary functions of behavior and how to shape it into appropriate forms of expression and communication when working with this population of youngsters. Strategies discussed will include positive reinforcement, priming, social stories, and behavior modeling.
Facilitators: Vanetta LaRosa, Ph.D., BCBA-D, Executive Director and Sarah E. Valente, MS Ed, Senior Behaviorist, Helping Hands Children’s Services
The Power of Play: Games and Tools for MentorsPLAY is truly the MAGIC ingredient in the recipe for a child's overall well-being. The world can be a particularly fast-paced, pressure cooker with children spending less time on free play and less time simply relaxed. Research documents the restorative healing power of play for children of all ages. The mentoring relationship is a powerful medium to combine support and encouragement with many different kinds of play. This workshop will review common stress symptoms in children and introduce variety of strategies, tools, and games that expand our own playfulness and incorporate stress relief into play. Facilitator: Marianne Esolen, L.C.S.W. Child Champions Network/Counselor, Counseling Consultant, and President and Founder of www.doallthegood.com
Empathic Listening: Strengthening Empathy in EveryoneNonviolent Communication teaches simple skills that enable people to connect with their own and others needs in a way that inspires compassionate response and the possibility for peace interpersonally and in the wider community. This interactive session will provide participants with tools to listen from calm presence, and how to respond in ways that strengthen empathy in both the listener and speaker. Playfully explore responses that are Empathy Blockers and practice responses that foster empathy.
Facilitator: Peggy Smith is a certified trainer with the International Center for Nonviolent Communication and President and Founder of www.opencommunication.org
