Dear Parents and Caregivers
The NSW Department of Education has produced a check-in
assessment in Reading and Numeracy for Year 3 and 5
students for this term. This assessment is not NAPLAN. The
assessments are online and occur throughout a two week
period from 17 August to 4 September for Year 5, and 21
September to 23 October for Year 3. The results of the assessments are to
assist schools and students in planning for learning. Each assessment
contains 40 multiple choice questions and students are rotated throughout
the two week period to complete the assessment.
Last week, it was wonderful to see our Years 3-6 students take part in our
annual athletics carnival. Back in Term 2, it was very unlikely any sporting
activity would take place but the support of the community in adhering to the
infection control measures that all schools are putting in place has enabled
some activities to continue in our school. Our school continues to plan other
activities for students in readiness for some of the restrictions being lifted so
that our students can experience a broad range of curriculum opportunities.
Our school has commenced the process of designing a new Strategic
Improvement Plan that continues to put as our focus the priorities of Literacy
and Numeracy for all students. Over the past 10 years, our students have
made tremendous growth in learning but they can improve even further with
additional support from teachers and the procurement of additional
resources.
The pandemic is not over. Last week, our school put in place additional measures for infection control due to the positive cases nearby in our community. Thank you for adhering to the new procedures by dropping and picking up students from the school gates. Parents wishing to speak to teachers can contact the school by calling 9637 2638. Thank you also for not sending students to school if they have any Covid-19 like symptoms: Fever (37.5 ° or higher), cough, sore/scratchy throat, shortness of breath, loss of smell or loss of taste. Other reported symptoms of COVID-19 include: fatigue, runny nose, muscle pain, joint pain, headache, diarrhoea, nausea/vomiting and a loss of appetite. It is important to get tested and isolate until the results are back.
Teachers are in the same predicament and have been asked not to come to school if they are showing Covid-19 like symptoms. This means that teacher absences may be slightly higher than usual, and classes are either covered by a casual teacher or split to other classes for the day.
The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts rain throughout the week. It is important that students wear a raincoat or use an umbrella to stay dry and avoid colds while waiting at the gates for their parents.

MEPS MAIL TERM 3 WEEK 4 — 12th August, 2020
Our school has moved to students being dropped off and picked up at the school gates. Parents will not be permitted to enter school grounds in the morning or afternoon. This is in response to the spread of Covid-19 in NSW, recent cases near our school and the return to full-time face-to-face learning guidelines provided by the NSW Department of Education.
In the morning, parents can drop their child at any of the three gates.
In the afternoon:
1. All Kindergarten students and their older brother or sister will leave via the Walker Street Gate (near the office).
2. All Year 1 and 2 students (without a brother or sister in Kindergarten) and their older brother sister will leave via the Myee Street Gate.
3. All Year 3-6 students without a younger brother or sister in K-2 will leave via the York Street gate.

Kindergarten Curiosity Mathematicians
This term, Kindergarten Curiosity has been learning about money and the combinations we can make using different types of money.
We learnt about different ways we can make $6 using different coins and notes.
Students were challenged to find combinations of books that Miss Gonzalez could buy if she had $10 to spend.
Bilal showed us that a $5 note is the same as five $1 coins.
Mia explained that $2 and $2 and $1 and $1 makes $6.
It is impossible for Miss Gonzalez to buy a book for $3 and $8 because that makes $11. - Adnan K
Zayan’s brain grew strong as he learnt something new.
$5 and $4 makes $9. $9 is less than $10 so this is possible - Staish

Canteen news
Volunteers are desperately needed to help in the
canteen. The canteen is inspected regularly and all
recommendations from the health department,
including Covid-safe processes, are followed closely.
Even volunteering for 1 hour a week would help.
We will have to close the canteen
on days where our canteen
manager has no help so please
consider sparing some time to
assist.

Meet the teacher
Miss Stretton - K Kindness.
What do you like about being a teacher?
Every day, I enjoy enabling my students to learn and grow, helping them become masterful readers, writers, problem-solvers, and critical thinkers. I live for that AHA! moment when my students first understand a new concept or see how the lesson applies directly to their lives. I get excited when students see improvement or when they are able to struggle through to mastery. I particularly enjoy coming to school each day just to have a conversation with them, to see what is happening in their lives. I love being the person they can come to if they need anything.

The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is open to all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9, in government, independent, Catholic and home schools.
This table illustrates the number of books each grade must read to be successful in this challenge
