March Behind the Wheel
Who would have known that February going to be so nice? Let’s not get fooled, its March
and anything can happen! The Grand Reopening of Mercedes-Benz of Denver was fantastic!
We had over 50 members in attendance, we even had one former member have his own car
on display. I have received emails and phone calls from 16 people who want to join the club.
I would like to thank Phil Mortensen for all his hard work so that the Mile-High Section was
a part of the reopening celebration.
We’ve had members asking for a tech section, it’s on April 8th at the Mercedes-Benz of
Loveland with a drive after to Estes Park for lunch. In June the event to Bishop Castle has
been changed to a tour of the Air Force Academy. And don’t forget the trip in August to
Grand Junction for the peach festival, watch the constellation for more information on that
fun event.
Drive Safe,
Bob

TEN INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MERCEDEZ-BENZ C111
C111
1. A total number of 13 Mercedes-Benz C111 were produced in which 11 were registered for the
road and had a number plate on them.
2. Toy manufacturers were producing this car in all scales, hoping that Mercedes-Benz will let
C111 go into production. They also did a Police version.
3. The front axle of C111 was taken and put into production on Mercedes-Benz S class W116
model and the multi-link rear axle was put into production in 1982 on Mercedes-Benz C Class,
W201.

4. The C111 with four-rotor engine could not be beat in terms of performance and handling at the time .
With an acceleration of 4.8 seconds from 0-100 km/h and the magic speed of 300 km/h, Mercedes- Benz
presented without no doubt a high-performance sport car, the comparable cars of Ferrari ( Daytona )
and Lamborghini ( Miura ) were usually a little heavier and did not reach the same speed because of
unfavorable air resistance. Only the 7 -liter model (400 hp SAE ) of Iso Rivolta in 1970 wanted to be at
the same height – but only after not quite reliable factory specification . Also at that time the average
output of normal cars was somewhere around 52HP.
5
5. In one of the C111 engineers installed a post-combustion system in order to improve the rather poor exhaust
emissions in rotary engines , so that the proportion of unburned hydrocarbons should be reduced. As a side effect,
when the engine revs, little blue flames at the exhaust appeared . Unfortunately this was never recorded in a photo ,
the color contrast to the white autumn metallic paint of the car making it impossible to capture.
6. C111 also came with V8, M117 engine type. Exact data about it are hardly available, it should have been a
minimum of two pieces : one in the first series with 250 hp , another in the second series , which had a single throttle
system and 330 hp. Both are far more reliable than the Wankel engines. The V8 vehicles recognized by insiders had
slightly raised rear hoods.
7. In the second series of C111, there was a model with automatic transmission.
8. The C111 design study was originally baptized , the C101 project. However, the “0 (zero)” in the middle had to
disappear , since this number combination has long been protected by Peugeot as a brand. So they replaced the “0” at
the IAA by a “1 “. C101 suffered the same fate as Porsche 901 at that time. Mercedes-Benz became legendary with
C111 while Porsche became legendary with 911.
9. In 1969, the first of the C111 was a “design studie” made by Bruno Sacco. It is now exposed at Mercedes-Benz
Museum in Munich and it looks like this:
6
10. In 1965 Paul Bracq designed a high-performance car with the title 700SL. Later on, a lot of those features, like
butterfly doors and wedge-shaped tail, appeared on Porsche 906.

Saturday, April 8, 2017, 9:30 am Please meet us for a tour and a tech session at Mercedes-Benz of Loveland, that followed by a drive to Estes Park for lunch at a lovely restaurant. Check the weather forecast the day before. A snow storm will cancel the event. Complimentary bagels and coffee will be served while we look at some beautiful cars and watch a technician service a car in their shop. We will hold a drawing to award a prize not to exceed $100 chosen by the winner from among the many fine accessories offered by Mercedes-Benz of Loveland.
