AcknowledgementsSome of the material in this book is based upon the work of the

following authors, who’ve contributed over the years to the vast can-vas that is BattleTech: Loren Coleman, Christopher Hussey, JimLong, Blaine Pardoe, and Anthony Pryor.

Special ThanksTo Randall for letting me blow a simple Field Manual Update

into a series we can only hope will sell; Loren Coleman for beingthe nag he always is; all my fellow writers (listed above) for comingup with quality work, somewhat on time; the massive playtestersupport apparatus (listed below) for bludgeoning the rules as muchas possible; the folks at WizKids—particularly Randall Bills, ScottHungerford, Will Littrell, and Janna Silverstein, for much-neededwork to break up the monotony (not that three other sourcebooksweren’t also in the mix already) with MechWarrior: Dark Age; and,of course, to Scott “Clutch” Taylor, his cronies, Raymond Arriasta,Charles Wilson, and Ted Wilson, and the vast membership of theFanPro Commandos for their hard work and dedication with writ-ing, producing, and carrying out the Lawyers, Guns, and Moneyspecial event that went into this and the original Revised FM.

The usual proofing crew: Rich Cencarik, Peter La Casse, MaxProhaska, and Christopher K. Searls.

Herb Beas would also like to thank:The usual suspects: Warner Doles, Pete Smith, Paul Sjardijn,

for their ongoing support, as well as the on-line community whoprovided much-needed release after (and sometimes even dur-ing) long hours of relentless writing; Tribble, Annie, Merlin, Oscar, and Meggie—the “Herblet Five” whose antics could be as fun asany vid game; and (naturally) Rebecca “Beckie” J Beas, for lettingme vent when things went hopelessly awry.

Randall Bills would like to thank:To Chris Lewis for doing all of his logos in color as well as

black & white, thus sparking my evil plan for a color section. To Rob Boyle for allowing me to squeeze in another color sec-

tion in a year already filled with them. Finally, it never ceases to amaze how much support can be

found within the BattleTech community and when an opportunityarises to increase the value of a product for the community as awhole, how much individuals will do to see the job done.

Raymond Arrastia and Brian Plunkitt at Fighting PirannhaGraphics for going completely above and beyond the call of duty, dropping everything to generate thirty-two new decals in recordtime, and mailing them to the appropriate artist to make sure theminiatures in the color section were just that one step cooler.

To the painters and photographers of the color section, whojumped at the chance to participate in a BattleTech productand once more in record time, produced some amazing minia-tures: Raymond Arrastia, Mike DuVal, Dave Fanjoy, Ross Hines,

David Kerber, Mark Maestas, Ryan Peterson, Ron Smith, CandiSmith, Allen Soles and finally Robert “Pidge” Pigeon, who wran-gled the artists and kept on top of the project to see it to com-pletion, as well as organizing and launching Camo Specs Online(www.camospecs.com), providing the resources from which Icould draw to make this color section a reality.

MERCENARIES SUPPLEMENTAL

A high-pitched shriek, accompanied by the eye-searing flash ofman-made lightning, punctuated the jolt that Damon Kirkpatrick feltall the way down his spine. Twin bolts slammed against the side ofhis Marauder, explosively flashing away more than a ton of ValiantLamellor, just close enough to the machine’s forward-jutting cockpitto scramble displays momentarily and set the hairs on Damon’s armon end. His hands clenching tightly around the hard plastic of his fir-ing controls, he simultaneously fought to draw a bead on his tor-mentor and keep the 75-ton avatar of destruction on its bird-like feet.

He was only partly successful.Already laboring under the heat of his last alpha strike, the

Marauder managed to remain upright with all the grace of adrunken spacer, pitching first to one side, then the other. Thearms flailed slightly in compensation, just enough to spoil the aimof his pulse lasers. Though one burst of ruby energy darts man-aged to graze the enemy Warhammer, they did little more thanscorch away some of its otherwise pristine blue and white paint.

Not my best performance, Damon thought bitterly as heregained control of the stumbling machine. He could almost hear

the LeSat MechWarrior laughing at him, and once more he real-ized how accustomed he’d been to his old FLS-7K Flashman, regardless of his own modifications.

The Warhammer turned slightly, trying to cut along his flank, its barrel arms tracking back to face him as it spat out a smatter-ing of laser fire, seeking holes in his ravaged armor that even nowwere cooling in the afternoon breeze. Raising his Marauder’sarms again and planting both of the ’Mech’s feet in a wide stance,Damon twisted to follow the Warhammer’s motion and thumbedthe triggers again. This time, twin bolts of his own particle cannonunerringly poured into the rebel’s armored hide, backed up by astream of shells from his dorsal mounted autocannon. His enginespiked in response, flooding the cockpit with white-hot air, all butstifling his breath as alarms rang out in warning.

“Alert!” an electronic voice said, impossibly calm even as theWarhammer’s return fire again pounded perilously close to hiscanopy. A quartet of rolling blasts followed, arriving from Damon’sother opponent, an age-worn, 60-ton Champion. “Heat level criti-cal,” the voice added. “Shutdown imminent.”

OLD DEBTS

“Shut up,” Damon growled as he slapped the override betweencoughs, his lungs blazing, sucking in air that stank of ozone andsweat. Engine breach, he told himself, confirming as much with aglance at his BDA monitor. This is much worse than I thought!

While most of Damon’s mind struggled with the ’Mech, a sliv-er of thought wondered where these new BattleMechs had comefrom. LeSat’s troops had been routed for over four years, sinceBaron Franklin LeSat and his pro-Katrina forces all but shatteredin the face of the Hasseldorf family and Damon’s own Kirkpatrick’sInvaders. Coming to Kaumberg was a debt repayment to a manwho long served in the mercenary command when family oblig-ations had demanded otherwise.Afterward, however, came the Civil War, when thebattle lines were really drawn.

LeSat’s supporters came back out of thewoodwork then, most of them dredging upwhatever weapons they could find—a fewpistols here, a pipe bomb there, even theodd machine gun-armed jeep—to mount aresistance against what they perceived as“the Davionist lapdogs” in charge. Nevermind that Baron Hasseldorf didn’t evenmake his bid for planetary Lordship afterthat fiasco, or enforce his will like so manyother victorious warlords in the past.Never mind that he had personally helpedthe planet rebuild its shattered defenseforces in the wake of their own private civilwar with the LeSat family, or that heretained the services of the Invaders toassure planetary security throughout the CivilWar at his own personal expense. Never mindeven that Baron LeSat himself was long dead! All of that, after all, was merely proof of the evilintentions of House Hasseldorf and its allied mer-cenaries to the rebels who surfaced, angry and venge-ful, cloaked in the colors of a fallen house.

All of that Damon could still understand, having known a fewhopeless causes worth fighting for in his own past. But, his mindasked once again, where did they get gear like this?

“Alpha Wolf!” a voice shouted in his ear, over the din of cock-pit alarms and the thunderous hail of missile fire punishing hisMarauder for standing in the open. Even through the noise, themercenary could still recognize the voice of his exec.

“About time, Alpha Coyote,” he said, loud enough for his throatmike to pick up. “I was getting tired of being the bait here, and Ithink my two remaining dance partners might tend to agree…”

“Sorry, sir,” Major Malavai Hollensteiner said. “The rebelssprang a lance of Demolishers and Drillsons on us five klicksback. We’re coming as fast as we can.”

“All speed, Coyote,” Damon snapped back, wincing as he feltanother PPC burst slam into his flank. The BDA monitor showedthe armor on his ’Mech’s left side was now more fiction than fact,

but at least the heat monitor had finally dropped into cautious yel-low, rather than the angry red of near shutdown.

I need to buy time…Swinging away from the Warhammer, Damon stomped on

his jump jet pedals. The Marauder lurched once, then shot intothe sky for a short, 120-meter flight, straight into a copse ofnative oak. Lasers and missiles streaked after him, but foundeither empty sky or hapless trees. As more of Kaumberg’sfamous timber farms became so many splinters and steamedleaves, Damon hit the ground gracefully enough. Twisting onlyslightly to bring the Champion under his crosshairs, he smiled

grimly, and snapped his triggers once. Two more particle bolts flew from the arms of

his Marauder, the lasers this time held in reserve.Cerulean energy washed over the lighter ’Mech,

searing away armor and cutting deep into theside torso SRM.The hoped-for explosion of an

ignited ammo bin never came, but the cloudof smoke and sparks that trailed away fromthe machine’s flank told Damon the missilelauncher was at least out of action.Whirling back on the Warhammer,Damon stabbed out with his mediumlasers next, worrying some armor, butcausing very little obvious damage.

The heat levels began to rise again.“Hang in there, boss,” came a new

voice, this one feminine, with a slightGerman accent. Damon glanced down at

his sensor screen, saw the blue icon racingforward. The LeSat MechWarriors obviously

saw it too, as both machines turned, respond-ing to the new threat.Damn it!

“This is no time for heroics, Hauptmann—”But already the beams were flashing, a snap of

lethal, coherent light blazing into the already weakened armor ofthe Champion from the onrushing red and black Wolfhound. Theheavier ’Mech twisted away from the onslaught, trying to shield itswounded side, while the Warhammer lashed out with its particlecannons again—and missed.

“Heroics, nothing!” said Hauptmann Cynthia Hasseldorf, his Invaders’ newly attached “liaison”. “I’m just here to repay anold debt.”

In spite of himself, Damon “the Indestructible” Kirkpatrick felta surge of pride, and a small smile crept along his face as helurched forward to support the smaller Hasseldorf ’Mech. Turningonce more to face the enemy Warhammer, he triggered anotherburst of pulse laser fire that scoured more armor away from theLeSat ’Mech.

“At this rate, Hauptmann,” he sighed, “neither of us will everbe out of debt!”
