Powerlines needed to meet demand
Reporter StaffThe graduating class of 2014 has
earned the best composite ACT (America College Testing) score for the Mercer Island School District in at least five years, the school dis-trict reported last week. The ACT college readiness assessment is a standardized test designed to assess student readiness for college or the workplace.
According to the announcement, the MIHS class of 2014 earned a composite score of 27.6. The state composite score was 23 and the national composite score was 21.
Island students earned their highest scores in English (27.5), Reading (27.6) and Science (27.2). Only the class of 2011 surpassed the class of 2014 in Mathematics, with a 28.1 over the 2014 score of 27.4. Scores range from one (low-est) to 36 (highest).

While the big new power lines planned by PSE are not anywhere near Mercer Island, they will serve the growing energy needs of Islanders as well as the Eastside, power planners say.
Puget Sound Energy will host another round of open houses for its Energize Eastside project next week, including one in Bellevue on Thursday, Sept. 11.
PSE is about two-thirds of the way through its community
outreach goals for the project, and citizen advisory commit-tees have reduced the number of routes being considered to run 230kV lines between Redmond and Renton down from 18 to 11.
E n e r g i z e Eastside Senior Project Manager Jens Nedrud said all have their chal-lenges and trad-eoffs. The goal is to link the lines to an additional transformer to increase capacity on the Eastside, as the four exist-ing in the area are beginning to feel the strain, he said. A fifth transformer is expected to handle capacity needs into 2030.
“People really get that there's growth," Nedrud said. “You're always going to have a small por-tion that say, ‘No, we're not grow-ing.’”
The energy company has been scrutinized by several neighbor-hoods along proposed routes for the Energize Eastside project that contend PSE is not in any emi-nent danger of reaching capacity here. PSE estimates it could reach
winter peak capacity by 2017. It also points to a Puget Sound Regional Council report that estimates a 70-percent growth in employment in the region by 2040.

“I am very proud of our students and staff for their outstanding performance on these important benchmarks for college-readiness,” said MISD Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano. Mercer Island High School Principal Vicki Puckett added, “These ACT scores rep-resent another impressive showing from our gradu-ating seniors and are a testament to our progress with students in this com-munity over time.” This year 199 MIHS students participated in ACT test-ing.
MIHS College Counselor Mj Hillstrom said, “Because the ACT is curriculum based and achievement oriented, rather than ability ori-ented, these scores tell me that MIHS students are learning very well and teachers are teaching very well. My hat is off to the partnerships that make this learning possible.”
The benchmark scores for the ACT are 18 in English, 22 in Mathematics, 22 in Reading and 23 in Science. According to the ACT Inc., a benchmark score is the minimum score needed on an ACT subject-area test to indi-cate a 50 percent chance of obtaining a B or higher or a 75 percent chance of obtaining a C or higher in the corresponding credit-bearing college courses.
As to the performance of students statewide, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Randy Dorn was posi-tive. “Our students per-form well, overall, on the ACT, and they continue to improve,” he said.

vation efforts could shore up the need for increasing capacity on the Eastside, but a study commissioned by PSE shows only 2,300 of its 1.3 million custom-ers are currently taking such conservation actions, said Gretchen Aliabadi, Energize
Eastside communications initiatives manager.
She said residents within proposed Energize Eastside routes vary in their opin-ions about erecting power poles between 90-125 feet in height, depending most-ly on whether they would obstruct their vista views. Aliabadi added taller poles allow PSE to use fewer poles to run lines farther.
Nedrud said under-grounding at 230kV has
existed for the past 10 years, but its technology is still too new and expensive for PSE to seriously con-sider. Power Engineers was hired on to consult on undergrounding options, he said, determining it could cost up to $28 mil-lion a mile for construction, as opposed to $4 million a mile for overhead lines. PSE wouldn't recover that cost through its utility rate, because the Washington
Utilities and Transportation Commission requires local jurisdictions to cover the d i f f e r e n c e between under-grounding and overhead lines.
"We don't know how many people would be pay-ing for it," he said, adding a tax would need to be levied for an under-grounding option.
Aliabadi said she under-stands not every Eastside resident will end up agree-ing with PSE that the proj-ect is necessary, however,
the state UTC will review the Energize Eastside once completed. If it is not
d e e m e d necessary, the energy company will not be able to r e c o v e r its costs, which are estimated as high as
$300 million.

City awaits Sound Transit study on parking
The City has been work-ing with Sound Transit for several years to identify options for new commuter parking in the vicinity of the future East Link Light Rail station slated for Mercer Island. During the course of those discussions, Sound Transit has also proposed creating a bus and light rail interconnection area or ‘Bus Integration,’ at which buses would turn around and deposit or collect light-rail passengers. By locating this activity on the Island, Sound
Transit believes regional bus service would be better inte-grated with East Link rail when it opens in 2023.
According to Sound Transit, the implementation of the bus-intercept model would lead to about the same number of buses stop-ping on the Island as today: 350 currently vs. 340 under the future scenario.
The City Council has sig-nificant concerns about the concept and has concluded that unless Sound Transit provides dedicated parking for Mercer Island residents, the City would not even consider supporting the bus integration proposal.
Sound Transit is analyzing building additional park-
ing (at its expense) at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center. The new parking would be available for all transit users while the South Bellevue Park and Ride lot is closed for con-struction.
That parking would then convert to City control, thereby allowing for resi-dent-only parking, or other operational choices.
Sound Transit will be pre-senting its parking analysis in the near future.

School newsSchool begins as construction gets underway
Well over 4,000 students returned to Island public school on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
“It is wonderful to have our students back in class-es. This community places a high standard on learn-ing, so it’s a great feeling to get back to work with students here,” said Mercer Island School District Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano.
Mercer Island High School (MIHS) Principal Vicki Puckett said, “Everything went very smoothly [Tuesday]. There was so much excitement amongst our newest stu-dents, especially fresh-men coming from Islander Middle School.”
For the 2014-15 academ-ic year, the district has bud-geted for an enrollment of 4,204 students. The district expects the final enrollment numbers to shift somewhat throughout the year.
“Parents, students and staff will notice some changes at MIHS and Islander Middle School,” said Dr. Plano. “We’ve made changes to entry at MIHS and are getting ready
for the new 10-classroom addition. The reconfigura-tion of the main parking area off SE 42nd Street at the front entry is under-going significant changes. The new dedicated parent drop-off lane should ease congestion along S.E. 40th Street and provide a safe place for students to arrive in the morning and wait to be picked up after school. At Islander Middle School, portable classrooms have been moved as we get ready for the redevelopment of that site, slated for early next year.”
There have been sev-eral changes in school leadership positions. This summer the district named Aimee Batliner-Gillette the new interim Principal at West Mercer Elementary and long-time MISD administrator Kathy Morrison will fill Batliner-Gillette’s previous role as Associate Principal for Lakeridge Elementary and Island Park Elementary schools on an interim basis, while Henterson Carlisle and Mark Zmuda were named Associate Principals at the high school.
Due to a half-time staff-ing reduction of the Mercer Island Youth and Family Services mental health
counselor at the elementary level funded by the City of Mercer Island, Kathy Bledsoe was added as a part-time interim Associate Principal supporting West Mercer Elementary. Bledsoe served as the inter-im Associate Principal at MIHS for the second half of the 2014-15 school year. Dr. Plano said, “I am honored and continue to feel fortu-nate to work with a hugely talented team of school and district leaders.”

Teachers receive 2.1 percent raise
On Thursday, Aug. 28, the Mercer Island School Board approved a new three-year contract with teachers that will last through August of 2017. Teachers voted to ratify the contract on Aug. 26.
“This contract negotia-tion was a successful, col-laborative and collective process that will benefit students, families, teach-
ers, the district, district staff and the community,” said Mercer Island School District Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano.
“The Mercer Island Education Association (MIEA) and the Mercer Island School District share a common vision to provide a high quality educational experience for our students,” said MIEA President Tani Lindquist. “Having not seen a cost-of-living increase, much less a pay increase, from the state in more than six years, we appreciate the district’s efforts to pay our teachers and education support staff a professional wage. Despite years of underfunding from the state of Washington, we need to be sure our dis-trict remains attractive and competitive to educators.”
For certificated staff, the contract includes a 2.1 per-cent pay increase in the first year and two percent raises in the second and third years. It also includes an increase in medical spend-ing each year, an additional half-day of paid profes-sional development starting in year two and increased professional development time overall.
Typically, the Washington State Legislature authorizes the bulk of any pay increase for school staff on a state-wide basis. Since the state has failed to authorize any cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) for the past six years, the district made the extra effort to reduce other district spending to meet the expense of the locally-
funded teacher pay raises. Any COLAs passed at the state level in the near future would be in addition to the pay increases from the dis-trict throughout most of the contract.
“Due to the lack of prog-ress we have seen from the state in regard to public school funding, we felt the district needed to dem-onstrate that we value our teachers and support staff,” said Human Resources Director Mark Roschy. “As a district, we stepped up to support their work and to keep the best teachers in our region in the Mercer Island School District.”
In addition to more pay for medical benefits, clas-sified staff will receive the equivalent of a 2.1 percent pay increase in the first year and 2.1 percent in the sec-ond and third years. In the third year, if funding for at least another 0.5 percent increase has come from the state, the district will only be responsible for 1.6 per-cent of that increase.
The contracts also increase safety-training requirements for parapro-fessionals and bring the district into compliance with a new religious obser-vance law from the state and state Teacher/Principal Evaluation Project (TPEP) standards.
Lindquist added, “We believe we have done important work through our contract negotiations to support public education programs and the staff who work with our students every day.”
MISD launches online school construction update toolThe Mercer Island School District has set up an on-line tool to keep Islanders informed about school district construction projects now underway at three Island schools.. The tool can be accessed throuh the main web site. at www.mercerisland-schools.org.On the main page, look at the left hand column entitled ‘Popular links’ and click on Construction Updates. Or simply go to http://www.mer-cerislandschools.org/Page/11038. Construction will require the occasional re-routing of busses, drop-off points, or traffic disrup-tions and changes in building uses.
The construction includes:A fourth elementary school on the old North Mercer Campus.An expansion at Islander Middle School to include more classrooms, labs, a commons and cafeteria.Ten additional classrooms at Mercer Island High School including 4 labs.The projects are funded by the bond levy passed by voters on February 11, 2014.

The Mercer Island School District is off to a good start. It is too early to count up how many students have enrolled at Island schools, but early numbers suggest
that enrollment is ahead of what was forecast for the year. The district however, seems more than prepared. The district has a lot to juggle this fall. Construction has begun on the multimillion dollar upgrades at the high school and the middle school while contractors are nearly ready to start on a brand new fourth elementary school. To their credit, the school district is trying to make infor-mation easily available on the construction progress via an online tool on their Website. As a taxpayer it is gratifying to be able to follow how our money is being spent. It will also help Islanders
prepare for the impact of construction on Island streets. It is a smart move that shows respect for Island citizens.
The new teachers contract just approved by the School District Board
of Directors is the outcome of many hours of work by both administrators and teachers. It is a document that contains many items that are meaningful beyond teachers pay - details such as the new training requirements that will ensure respect for religious and cultural differences and safety. And good news. ACT scores for Island seniors have hit another high. This achievement once again demonstrates what can happen when excellent teacher work in partner-ship with Island families and the community. Finally, the discussion and vote by the City Council to endorse Initiative 594 — to impose background checks and registration on all who wish to buy guns — was gratifying and informative despite being mostly symbolic. Citizens waited more than an hour for their turn to speak. We applaud their caring and activism.

The Mercer Island City Council is to be commended for their well-consid-ered and compassionate response to those people who advocated Tuesday evening for support for Initiative I-594. I am a member of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and I was heartened and moved by the elo-quent speakers who presented their case to the council and by the subsequent dis-cussion that ensued. With the exception of two council mem-bers who presented their opposing views, there was a unified and dignified response and now we can proudly say that our Mercer Island City Council is on board in their sup-port for ethical, rational and consti-tutionally sound legislation that will help make our community and our state a safer place for all. Thank you to our council for listening and for your vote to join our cause. Your thoughtful remarks and inherent integrity deeply impressed this Mercer Islander.

Kudos to City CouncilI would like to commend the
Mercer Island City Council for its endorsement of Initiative 594 after a public hearing at their council meet-
ing on Sept. 2, 2014. The council lis-tened intently as a large and diverse group of Islanders told their stories and expressed their concerns about the problem of gun violence in local communities, and spoke in support of I-594 as a way to improve public safety.
Currently, only those buying guns from licensed gun dealers are required to undergo background checks in Washington State. This loophole
makes it easy for felons and other prohib-ited individu-als to evade b a ck g rou nd checks by buy-ing firearms from unli-censed deal-
ers at gun shows, online, or in other private transactions with no questions asked. I-594 would close that loophole.
Impressive statistics available from sources such as the FBI, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives show that in states that have adopted compre-hensive background checks, there have been significant decreases in gun crimes. These include reductions in aggravated assaults with firearms, women shot to death by intimate part-ners, police officers killed with hand-guns, and firearm suicides.
I am proud that our local officials have stepped forward to validate their constituents’ concerns by endorsing I-594. Gun crime affects local commu-nities, as has been so tragically obvious

Mercer Island Directory nets $120,000 for Seattle Children’s Hospital
Publishers of the Island’s own phonebook, the Mercer Island Guild of Seattle Children’s Hospital, is pleased to report that revenue from ad sponsorships and donations from residents remained strong in 2014 allowing the guild to donated $120,000 to the hospital.
Consistently listed in the top ten out of almost 500 Guilds supporting uncompensated care and research at the hospital, the Directory has gener-ated over $100,000 every year since 1995.
Support by local busi-nesses and generous donations by island resi-dents has made this pos-sible since 1943, when the MI Guild took over the phonebook. The earliest version of the directory was a for-profit business owned by Warren Upper, a
local high school student. In 1942, he enlisted in WWII and sold his small business, then a printed list of only 200 residents, to the MI Guild. Since then the MI Directory has operated as a charity, now having 63 pages of resi-dential listings and over 400 advertisers.

Expenses are kept as low as possible by the 33 active guild members, who do everything but the design, layout and printing of the Directory. Mailing day in March is a big event, with many island residents joining the members stuffing the phone book into enve-lopes and organizing them for easy handling by the post office. Year round, numerous changes, dele-tions and new numbers
are added to the data base, invoices are sent, dona-tions tallied and new ads and ad renewals are solic-ited.
The September Guild meeting is Friday, Sept 12.

away August 30, 2014.Born and educated in Sweden, she
came to the U.S. as a young nurse. After meeting her husband, Phil, in Hawaii when his Merchant Marine ship ran aground on a sand bar, she returned with him to Seattle where she lived for over 60 years.
Ingrid worked as a nurse to put Phil through UW Pharmacy School. She was a long time member of Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church, an avid bridge player, a member of the Lawrence Colman Orthopedic Guild, and a terri� c mother and grandmother. She enjoyed the last 5+ years at Island House on Mercer Island.
She is survived by her daughter, Monica Robbins and her husband, Mark, Jr. of Mercer Island; son, Tom and his wife, Claudine; grandchildren, Rory (Jessica) and Christian Siedler, Nicole (Cedric) Brookens and Dane (Megan) Robbins, currently living in Chandler, AZ. The victim, who lives part time in California, was not at home at the time, and called a friend to check on her house as she believed that the card used was in her Mercer Island house. Her neighbor saw that the front door was open and there was a broken window in the bathroom. She called 911 - the home had been rum-maged through.
Vehicle prowl: A 54-year old man told police that two vehicles were prowled in the 8500 block of S.E. 45th Street between 2 p.m. Sept. 2 and 10:30 a.m. Sept. 3. Nothing was taken from the two cars, a Pontiac Grand AM and a Dodge Intrepid. Both were unlocked.

After struggling to find the end zone in the open-ing half of Friday’s season opener, the offensive units for Mercer Island and Bishop Blanchet went on a combined 54-point scor-ing tear in the second half of their contest at Islander Stadium. With three of Blanchet’s four second-half touchdowns coming in the game’s final quarter, the Braves managed to outlast the Islanders in a wild fin-ish, 30-27.
It was a stark contrast from the game’s first half, with the only points com-ing from a 22-yard field goal from Bishop Blanchet's Christian Peterson. The game saw three lead changes in the final three minutes, while the visiting Braves found the end zone three times on runs of 50 or more yards.
While Mercer Island head coach Brett Ogata said after the game his team had its share of defensive issues that needed to be fixed, he also felt his team was get-ting back to game shape in its season opener.
“Ultimately, Blanchet is a really good team and it was a tough game for us, but we learned a lot of things tonight to get better,” he said. “I'm proud of the way we competed. Obviously, we have to play a little bit smarter and do some things better, but we'll get that fixed. We'll be better next week.”
Coming out of the half down 3-0, Jack Counihan put Mercer Island on the board in the opening min-utes of the third quarter, picking off Blanchet quar-terback Davine Tullis and returning the interception 25 yards for a touchdown. Tullis would respond on
Blanchet’s next drive with a 52-yard end-zone dash, giving the Braves a 10-7 advantage.
Mercer Island marched down the field on the ensu-ing possession, setting up a first-and-goal inside the Braves’ 10-yard line, but an offensive pass interfer-ence penalty pushed the Islanders outside Blanchet’s 20-yard line. On fourth-and-goal, a 27-yard pass from Alfonso Gonzalez found Eric Kim in the back of the end zone to give the Islanders a 13-10 lead to close out the third.
Gonzalez extended Mercer Island’s lead in the fourth quarter, with a QB sneak from a yard out to put the Islanders ahead 20-10 with just over six minutes to go in regulation.
But that proved to be enough time for the Braves. On its next drive, Blanchet running back Oshea Trujillo reached the end zone on a 50-yard run. A possession later, a 31-yard run from Tullis put the Braves ahead 24-20 with 2:46 left in the game. Mercer Island struck back, with Gonzalez finding Kim in the end zone again with
a 40-yard touchdown pass to give the Islanders a 27-24 lead with 2:06 remaining. But on Blanchet’s next drive, Trujillo broke free for another 50-yard scamper, scoring the deciding touch-down with 1:40 left.
Ogata said after the game assignment breakdowns while defending Bishop Blanchet’s counter in the rushing game ultimately doomed the Islanders.
“We'll watch film and fix that up so we don't get these big, long runs they had against us,” he said. “If we can cut that down and make them work a little bit harder, the game's probably not close.”

As long as Chauntelle Johnson has coached Mercer Island girls swim and dive, the Islanders have made a point of winning state championships, with Mercer Island taking the 3A state title as a team in each of Johnson’s first five seasons. For a program that makes it look easy, does that make going for six any harder?
“They’re all hard! Are you kidding me?” she exclaimed with a laugh during the opening week of practice at Mary Wayte Pool.
All kidding aside, the Mercer Island swim coach had a very successful year last season, with both the boys and girls teams win-ning state titles under her tutelage. But this fall will feature a few fresher faces on the girls side, with a third of Mercer Island’s swimmers new to the pro-gram.
“The great thing about this program is even though we lose kids that have a ton of talent, there’s always a kid waiting for an opportunity to move into that spot,” said
Johnson. “Some of these girls have been working really hard and I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen from them these first few days.
“Every year, it’s hard because you lose someone who’s been on the team for three seasons and then they’re gone. But now, we’ve got a different set of girls who’ve been on the team for three seasons who now get to step in as leaders, so I wouldn’t say that we have a lot of spots that we need to fill.”
The swimmers step-ping into leadership roles will include senior captains Leah Fisk, Sofija Raisys, Angela Riggins and Kirbi Phillips. Also returning for Mercer Island is junior Sabrina Kwan, who quali-fied for four state tourna-ment events last season.
Johnson said this year’s team offers plenty of size and depth, which will allow options on which events to assign swimmers. Keeping a team competitive for so long is a feat within itself, and Johnson said it’s about being flexible, knowing what the team has to offer and how to help those kids progress. With every new year, it’s about focusing on what’s ahead and not what the team has done in the past.
“The goal is to go for a state championship and that’s been the goal for five years, but the goal is to go for number one,” said Johnson. “No one has won anything this year and there are lots of really tal-ented swimmers and teams in the state. All we can con-trol is what we do at Mary Wayte.”
Cross-country senior captain Dylan Lesko was happy to be one of three Islanders competing at the state tournament last November. He just wished he had more company.
“Even though it was fun for us to go, it would’ve been a lot more fun if we had a team going,” said Lesko, who competed at state along with Alexa Bauman and Cecelia Rosenman.
This fall, Mercer Island cross-country hopes to stay together as a pack as both the boys and girls teams make their push for a state tournament berth.
“Our guys team hasn’t
made it to state since the year before we became freshman,” said captain Nathan Gallatin. “We feel like this year is our first great chance at getting back to state.”
On the girls side, the Islanders saw encouraging strides from its younger runners last season that the team hopes to capital-ize on this year.
“The girls JV won KingCo last year,” said captain Adrienne Suhm. “This year we’re hoping to have a bigger pack, with the same goal as the boys, that advances to state.”
While team captains expressed the importance
of building a strong foun-dation for the future by integrating all grades into the pack, the Islanders haven’t taken their collec-tive eye off the upcoming season. They’re excited to work with the younger talent coming up as they gear for the 2014-15 sea-son.
More than anything, the Islanders all share one common goal.
“With both teams not going to state last year, I think everybody really wants it more,” said Suhm. “It’s going to be tough to get there, but that’s the work we have to put in.”

After finishing third in KingCo the previous two seasons, KingCo title aspi-rations are very real for Mercer Island golf captains William Mansfield and Luke Mounger.
“KingCo is wide open this year,” said Mansfield. “I think we definitely have a good shot at winning.”
“Beyond that, I know that there are a lot of individu-als that are trying to make it to districts or state,” said Mounger. “We have a lot of players who have that ability.”
To realize those goals,
the Islanders will look to its senior players to acclimate the team’s four first-time varsity players.
“We have a weird variety of experience and then no experience,” said Mounger. “For five of our top ten var-sity players, this will be at least their third year of golf. So we have a lot of experi-ence and a lot of inexperi-ence and not a whole lot of in-between.”
But the Mercer Island captains aren’t sweating breaking in the new tal-ent. They pride their team on having a solid top core
that maintains a close-knit group.
“I think this year, one area that we’ll not only improve on but we’ll make it a team strength is our depth,” said Mounger. “We have young players who have a lot of potential and we have the pieces to have ten really strong varsity players. It’s just getting out some of the kinks of inexperience.”
“And just building the experience for the younger players so we stay good as a program in the future,” added Mansfield.

Island girls soccer coach Ryan Camden wants his girls to come together.
“Unity is the main focus. Once we have a unit, the opportunities are endless,” said the first-year coach. “If we come together as one program, if everyone is sticking to plan, then we’re going to be successful. That’s the goal.”
Camden takes over at the helm for the departing Terry Ryan. He’s served as the JV coach for the past three years, working under Ryan and Ryan’s predeces-sor, Nicole Nelson.
Camden said the Islanders will look to build from the back this season, with the team’s strength coming on the defensive end. His philosophy is once establishing a solid defense, a solid offense will come.
“The team wants to get to the playoffs, their dreams are high,” he said. “I told the girls that if you put in the work and stick to the plan, come together as one unit and one team, you will meet those team goals this year. If everyone wants it and is dedicated, everything else will fall into place.”
Camden plans to carry a
slimmer varsity roster and bigger JV squad to serve as a message that no one’s varsity spot is safe. He said when it comes to varsity spots, everyone has to come in day-in and day-out and prove themselves to their coaches and teammates.
“Every single player has an expectation and a role they try to perfect,” he said. “They have jobs and assign-ments in practices that carry into games. We have high expectations this year, but when everyone’s com-mitted, we can definitely succeed and get where we want to go.”

In addition to the New York Fashion Week festivi-ties, her nail lacquers were featured in the swag bags at 2014 MTV Movie Awards, where it landed in the hands of numerous celebri-
ties including cast members from “Two Broke Girls,” “Grimm,” “Hart of Dixie,” “Justified” and “Nashville.”
Ellison’s Organics nail polishes are created one bottle at a time by Pearce
herself. They are vegan-friendly and gluten, formalde-hyde, toluene and DBP free, with no added dyes or chemicals, she explained.
“To keep things fresh, I mix each shade to order, right in the bottle,” notes Pearce. “My con-
cern is keeping our polishes as healthy and environmen-tally-friendly as possible. So, in addition to being 'three-free' and vegan, most colors are derived from nat-ural micas and pigments,” Pearce said. This makes for a ‘friendlier’ polish than the normal options. And it is around the same price as OPI (a well known brand),” she explained.
Pearce founded her com-pany in 2012 in an effort to find affordable organic soap products she could use for her children. The
name Ellison comes from the combination of Pearce's sons’ names, Elliott and Harrison. She explained that her second son was born prematurely and was in the NICU for a time.
“His little body was try-ing so hard to grow, and I didn’t want to add any more to his system to process out from shampoo or soap,” she said. “In look-ing for organic bath product options for him, I realized how expensive they are and how boring they were for kids. So I started making my own organic soap and decided to offer it to other families at prices that wouldn’t break the bank. It grew from there as I found I enjoy it; mixing colors and making product is a fun and creative outlet for me.”
Her soaps are also hand crafted and use organic oils including organic, sustain-able palm oil.
The kids’ soaps are a big hit, she said, espe-cially as stocking stuffers at
Christmas and for birthday party favors. The dinosaurs and Lego men blocks are the most popular. They are also naturally colored.
Pearce, who now lives in Texas, graduated from Mercer Island High School in 1999. She was on swim team for two years and in
band all four years, reach-ing first chair in trumpet as a senior. She also worked at the Mercer Island library during high school. She graduated in 2003 from the
University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority.
She hopes her business will continue to grow. “
Someday I’d love to have an offsite production facility with room to store all of my supplies, but I am not there yet,” she said.
It looks like she might be on her way. The com-pany has a five-star rating on Etsy, a website featuring handmade items. Her nail
lacquers have been growing in popularity. In addition to being at New York Fashion Week, her products will be featured at yet another gift lounge at the Golden Globes next year

Yet another Bicentennial

A few weeks ago, my wife and I sat next to Coach Ed Pepple and his wife Shirley at Century Link Field watch-ing the Seahawks trounce the Chicago Bears in a pre-season contest. Prior to the start of the game, an immense American flag covered the north end of the
field as the national anthem was sung. When the solo-ist reached “the rockets red glare, the bombs burst-ing in air,” flares shot out of the scoreboard on cue. The effect was impressive. Cheers exploded from the enthusiastic crowd.
But it doesn’t take pyro-technics to cause my patri-otic heart to maintain a proud cadence. The sight of “Old Glory” painting the breeze is about all that’s required. There's just some-
thing about the standard of our freedom that reminds me of our God-blessed history and the fact that I share a common identity with a nation of some 300 million people. There was also something about see-ing “the stars and stripes” that kindled an emotional response in 35 year old law-yer by the name of Francis Scott Key.
On September 14, 1814, the morning after the British failed in their attempt to
take Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor, Key spied the flag still flying at the fort. From his posi-tion on a ship ten miles out to sea, he scratched out a poem on a piece of paper and titled it “Defence of Fort M’ Henry.” The rest (as they say) is history!
Several years ago I saw the original flag on display at the Smithsonian. That tattered and faded fabric measured 42 feet by 30 feet. It was the immense size of the flag that allowed Key to see it from such a distance from the fort.
As I stood in front of the huge flag with its fifteen stars and fifteen stripes, I couldn’t help but feel dwarfed. But that’s as it should be. The
symbol of our freedom represents a dream and a destiny much larger than we can imagine or embrace. It also codifies a common commitment to defend that dream and des-tiny against acts of terror at home and abroad.
This week also marks the thirteenth anniversary of the events that blind-sided our comfortable rou-tines on a typical Tuesday we will forever refer to as 9/11. Who can’t forget the sight of those three New York firefighters hoisting an American flag amid the rubble at Ground Zero? It’s an image that reminds us we live in “the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
