Meet Mobee the Giraffe Having state-of-the-art x-ray and imaging equipment is important for accurate and efficient diagnosis of patients. Having fun x-ray equipment is also a perk! Recently, Mercer Health obtained Mobee the giraffe, a Siemens, model Mobilett XP, x-ray machine. Mobee is:

• Portable and wireless so radiology technologists can be more efficient with their workload .

• Fast! Within 10 seconds, the x-ray image is displayed, versus other machines that can take minutes to display an image. So, if another image is needed, it can be taken right away, eliminating the need for patients to wait.

• Lightweight and compact yet offers one of the longest arm ranges of any imaging machine.

Sara Bruening, Director of Medical Imaging Services at Mercer Health states, "We had the option to get the new x-ray machine with or without the giraffe design. We thought why not get something fun and hopefully make the thought of having to get an x-ray a little more fun ."

Mercer Health continues to reinvest in its diagnostic equipment with the recent purchases of new imaging equipment at both Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater and the Community Medical Center located on 127, south of Celina.

Mercer Health Family Care -Coldwater moving to new location Mercer Health Family Care - Coldwater, the office of Dr. Michelle Winner and Linda Wellman, CNP, will be moving from its current location , just south of Mercer County Community Hospital, to a newly renovated office in the northwest comer of Mercer Health West Campus, formerly Briarwood Manor. Setting the Pace "Providing quality, accessible care requires a commitment to improving access, coordination and delivery of healthcare. Simply, if we want the citizens of our community to be healthy, we need to set the pace." states Penny Cooper, VP of Quality at Mercer Health. "Our teams have been working hard to take healthcare to the next level in our community." Quality initiatives include:

• "Safe Sleep is Good4Baby" is a statewide initiative supported by the Ohio Hospital Association (OHA). Ohio has one of the worst infant mortality rates in the nation, ranked 47th with a rate of 7.6 in 2012. As a participant of the campaign, Mercer Health is taking many steps including modeling safe sleep practices in the hospital; counseling new parents and families about safe sleep, and providing parents with a safe sleep diaper bag, sleeper, board book and educational materials; and advocating and educating in the community about the importance of safe sleep.

• Partnership for Patients is a national CMS initiative, supported in Ohio by OHA, to improve the quality, safety and affordability of health care for all Americans. Mercer Health has been recognized as I of 8 hospitals in Ohio for its extraordinary achievement by accomplishing a reduction of Hospital Acquired Conditions (HACs) and/or decrease in hospital readmissions .

Volunteers Offer a Unique Service with a Special Mission "Annually the volunteers donate about $15,000 towards equipment and other projects within the Mercer Health organization." states Jane Stammen, Director of Volunteers at Mercer Health. "We hold fundraisers like our annual Easter Bake Sale, Holiday Open House and Chicken Dinners. We also manage the Hospitality Gift Shop which not only offers an opportunity for visitors to buy gifts for hospitalized loved ones but also offers the community a unique shopping experience."

Stammen states, "We offer a unique service with a special mission. We have annual projects like the purchase of gifts for all pediatric patients but we also have many projects that we are continually working towards . Some of the larger gifts we have been able to provide to the hospital are the six Staxi transport wheelchairs donated this fall and also ER stretchers and mechanical depression devices for CPR in the ER."

"There are a variety of ways volunteers can support Mercer Health . We have chaplains, surgical hosts , sewing volunteers,

The past year, the MED Foundation has:

• Awarded over $14,000 in scholarships to 16 local high school graduates furthering their education in health care. The LUCAS® Chest Compression System was obtained through a combined donation totaling $12,000 from Mercer Health's Volunteer Association, the MED Foundation and the Yaney Heart Fund managed by the Mercer County Civic Foundation . "The LUCAS System has already paid for itself," shares Dr. Craig Dues , a physician at Mercer Health's Emergency Room .

"We have already saved one life with it. As far as 1 know, we are the only emergency room and hospital in the area utilizing a LUCAS Chest Compression System."

• Obtained donations from local community members to allow for the renovation of the former Meeting Room 1

Specifically, Mercer Health is involved in developing and sharing best practices for advances in reducing hospital readmissions with a focus on health literacy.

"We take our responsibilities seriously. We continue to demonstrate compliance with all our performance standards from The Joint Commission, our accrediting agency. In fact, this fall we earned our Gold Seal of Approval® from The Joint Commission, which is awarded for a three-year period and reflects our commitment to providing safe and effective patient care through the evaluation of standards related to several areas including emergency management, environment of care, infection prevention and control , leadership and medication management. Staff from across the organization continue to work together to develop and implement approaches that have the potential to improve care and set the pace for health for the patients in our community."
