MercuryadvisorieshavebeenissuedformanymajorwaterbodiesinCalifornia,includingcoastalareasofNorthernCalifornia.HumboldtBayiscurrentlydesignatedasanareainneedofasite-specificfishadvisory(Smithetal.2016).In2012,theNorthCoastRegionalWaterQualityControlBoarddeterminedthatHumboldtBaydidnotwarrantlistingformercuryimpairmentunderCleanWaterActSection303(d)basedonmusseltestingdoneinthe1980s(NCRWQCB2012).However,thatsameyear,areportwasreleasedshowingthatLeopardSharkfromHumboldtBayhadthehighestmercurylevelsinastatewideassessmentofcontaminantsincoastalfish(Davisetal.2012),indicatinganeedforfurthersamplingofcommonlyeatenfishcaughtinHumboldtBay.

Background

FishconsumptionisthemajorrouteofmethylmercuryexposureintheUnitedStates(ATSDR1999).Formanyyears,mercuryadvisoriesfocusedprimarilyonwhichfishtoavoid.Aresultofthisapproachwasthatmanypeoplesimplyeliminatedfishfromtheirdiets,especiallypregnantwomen.

Therearemanyhealthbenefitsofeatingfishthatislowinmercury,PCBs,andothercontaminants.Fishishighinproteinandlowinfat,andisanimportantsourceofomega-3fattyacids,whichsupporthearthealthandbrainfunctions(Silbernageletal.2011).Inrecentyears,concernshavebeenraisedaboutgenericfishadvisoriescausingharmbyencouragingpeopletolimittheirfishconsumption,therebylimitingthebeneficialeffectsofeatinglow-mercuryfish(Verbrugge2007).

Methylmercuryisapowerfulneurotoxinthatcancauselossofcoordination,blurredvisionorblindness,andhearingandspeechimpairment.Atlowerlevelsofexposure,moresubtlesymptomsinadultsarenumbnessortinglinginthehands,feet,and/oraroundthemouth.Developingfetusesareparticularlysensitive,andcanexperienceslightdecreasesinlearningabilities,languageskills,attentionand/ormemoryfunction(Silbernageletal2011).

Methylmercuryaccumulatesinthebody,andmagnifiesinlarger,olderanimalsthateathigheronthefoodchain(Davisetal.2012).Butreducingmercuryexposurefromfishconsumptioncanlowerthemercurylevelsinbloodandhairsampleswithinafewmonths(Bose-O’Reillyetal.2010).Thisisespeciallyimportantinformationforwomenofchild-bearingage,sincetheycanreducetheirbabies’mercuryexposurebyeliminatingfishwithhighmercurylevelsfromtheirdiets.
