ANNUAL REPORTJuly 2017 - June 2018

Mercy Volunteer Corps

Dear Friends in Mercy,

On behalf of our Board of Directors and Staff, and with deep gratitude, I present to you Mercy Volunteer Corps’ 2017-2018 Annual Report. Many of you are aware that we have spent this year honoring the 40th Anniversary of Mercy Volunteer Corps. What a blessing to celebrate this important event across our service cities.

As a result of our celebrations, we have reconnected with so many and have heard the stories of those who have been engaged with this mission throughout these 40 years. We are reminded how much effort and collaboration it takes to move this mission forward and we are thankful for each of you who play such an integral role in the mission of Mercy Volunteer Corps. Over this past year, Mercy Volunteers served over 69,000 hours and 19,000 individuals, in no small part due to your support year after year.

We renew our commitment to continue Catherine’s vision of connecting people who have a heart for service with those who need our help. We do so in partnership with all of you, and we look forward to many more years of providing service in the name of Mercy together.

Gratefully in Mercy,

Marian UbaExecutive Director

“Though my year of service is over, I will always carry the people I served in my heart. I have faces and stories to help me look through a lens of Mercy. So when there is a decision or a policy to be made, I have a personal connection when I ask: How does this affect the least of us?”

The Catholic Migration Services (CMS) office in Sunnyside Queens, New York offers a variety of services to immigrants in the community who often respond with tears, some of joy and some of anguish. The livelihood for many of these people is fickle as the laws frequently change, the stigma against immigration grows, and their options are often limited. Despite those difficulties, our services at CMS can at least ease the burden that so many immigrants regularly experience. Our clients often come in with looks of despair and sometimes pleading for help. It’s comforting to know that CMS exists as a free service to help them with seemingly insurmountable problems. The ability to provide assistance to these people has been incredibly life-giving as I can see the real and human emotions that migrants experience.

The process I go through with each individual client is arduous and lasts for months. I work primarily with immigrants applying for citizenship and the required steps to become a citizen alone can be tough. They often have to collect a number of documents, talk about sensitive aspects of their past, and spend several hours with me before the application can even be reviewed by a lawyer. From the date the application is sent out, they then have to study a comprehensive set of civics-based exam questions, improve their English, and conduct an extensive interview with immigration. After they have taken the oath and receive their certificate of naturalization, my clients call me so happy to know they are now full-fledged members of the United States who will never face the risk of being pulled away from their families or forced to pay fees to renew their green cards.

At CMS, I have tried to find a way to maximize those tears of happiness and be a resource that helps provide assistance towards a better life. Seeing the joy on the faces of my clients who feel so relieved that everything will be alright after we tell them that we can take their case puts my life into perspective. I will never experience the uncertainty that they face on a daily basis and it has helped me learn the challenges of what people face in the pursuit of providing a better life for themselves and their family.

The end of my year of service was an especially exciting time for me because the first clients I helped back in August 2017 partook in their oath ceremony. I have officially seen the entire process that a person applying for citizenship must go through and that I have been helping and prepping them for each step of the way. That personal connection of helping someone through such an arduous process has given me a greater appreciation of both the trials of others and my ability to assist them.

During my senior year of college, I knew that I wanted to serve after graduation. After prayer, I felt as though God was leading me to go somewhere I had never been before. Somewhere out of my comfort zone. As a child of God, I am called to be a light. Light does not hide in one spot. It radiates outward reaching every corner driving out darkness. So I decided to join MVC, pack my things, and move to Detroit. I told myself that this year of service would be a year of servitude, humility, and walking more in my identity as a child of God. I won’t lie, I was terrified at first. I was afraid I was making a mistake. I was afraid that I wouldn’t find a church home. I was afraid that being in a new environment all by myself would be detrimental to my physical, mental, and spiritual health. I thank God that I decided to ignore my fears because moving to Detroit was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Moving to Detroit, I was completely stepping into the unknown. It forced me to put my trust in God, and just trust that He would guide me on this journey. Without a doubt, this year of service has strengthened my relationship with Christ. I have grown spiritually in a way I would never have if I stayed at home near the comfort of friends and family. In Detroit, I’ve had the opportunity to strengthen my faith without distractions. I was able to find a church home in the city and it has allowed me to mature in God. By growing closer to Christ I’m learning just how much He loves me. This, in turn, allows me to love others. Every day, I work towards carrying the love of God in all that I do. This includes carrying the love of God in my service site as well. God has commanded us to love one another as we love ourselves. Every day, I strive more and more towards this beautiful command. Through finding my identity in Christ, I’m learning to find my identity in the world and in my service site.

Through God, I discovered my reason for being in Detroit. He constantly tells me to go out and exude His love, mercy, grace. So I continue to work towards His glory being shown through me in my service site and in my community. As God shows me love, I must also show love. As God shows me mercy, I must also show mercy. As God shows me grace, I must also show grace. The things God has shown me while in Detroit have changed me forever. This year was such a pivotal time in my life. I did not expect to grow spiritually as much as I did. But then again, this whole year has been full of surprises. God has definitely shown me that He is a God of surprises. Detroit taught me that I must continuously live a life of servitude and humility to God and others. I pray that even after this year of service, I will continue to grow in Christ and spread His love everywhere I go.

“We should be shining lamps, giving light to all around us”-Catherine McAuley
