Physiological Needs◦ literal requirements of human survival. Without

meeting these requirements, the human body cannot possibly continue to function

Safety Needs◦ the individual’s safety needs take precedence and

dominate behaviour. Love / belonging

◦ friendship, intimacy, family.◦ the need to feel wanted and accepted

Esteem◦ factors of self esteem- the need to feel respected,

have self respect, to respect others Self Actualisation

◦ “being” need- doesn’t apply to everyone◦ instinctual needs of a human to make the most of

their ability. ◦ what a man can be, he must be

Maslow has very good points, that he believes would help most people achieve becoming a self actualising person starting from younger ages. For example, he believes the ways of school education are getting in the way of children getting to the point of self actualisation in their lives. That education should have a different approach. – These ideas are good, but are not realistic in the long run, there is still a need for education, there are some things you can’t teach children, and it is for them to experience themselves later in life.

Critique of Theory

Maslow’s theory has helped us understand the factors in which humans need to satisfy in every day life to be healthy and physically empowered.

For example: By achieving goals like belonging, we can know where we belong in society, and who we can trust, which becomes apart of our safety.
