The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing. 2. Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled, and still their heavenly music floats o'er all the weary world; above its sad and lowly plains, they bend on hovering wing, and ever o'er its Babel sounds the blessed angels sing. removed Saul and raised up David as king; of him he testified, ‘I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will carry out my every wish.’From this man’s descendants God, according to his promise, has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus. John heralded his coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentanceto all the people of Israel; and as John was completing his course, he would say, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.”When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus. The Gospel of the Lord ALL: Praise to you , Lord Jesus Christ Homily Nicene Creed: I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, and the rod of their taskmaster you have smashed, as on the day of Midian. Luke 1: 1-14 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town. And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fieldsand keeping the night watch over their flock. The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear. The angel said to them,“Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in waddling clothes and lying in a manger.”And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” The Gospel of the Lord ALL: Praise to you , Lord Jesus Christ Homily Preparation of Gifts hymn: Suo Gan Holy Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. All Are Welcome! Merry Christmas! December 25, 2020

~ From the Desk of Father Tom ~

Dear Friends,

I wish you a Most Blessed and Happy Christmas!

I almost could just stop there, as it encapsulates what I wish for all of you and your loved ones, but being filled with excitement about this precious feast I just must keep going. The joy of this season derives from the miracle of what is given to us with the birth of Christ. The story captures both the hardships and the graced moments involved. And this is where the mystery touches our own lives as well.

A simple, good woman receives an invitation to cooperate with God, in a way that is incomprehensible to her. Yet, trusting the angel messenger, she simply says “Yes” to God. She knows it will expose her to derision from others, who will not quite believe what she is telling them, but she is undeterred. She speaks to her betrothed, who in great love for her does not wish to see her harmed. He decides to divorce her quietly, until the angels speak to him as well, telling him to trust his wife. And that was that, he accepted the mission also. What spiritual and holy people, who believed all that God asked them to be a part of!

This Christmas we also are being asked to be a part of something we cannot see in its fullness. Touched by fear and worry, we are being asked to celebrate the fragile gift of an infant, who in his seeming powerlessness offers no real ability to save us from all we are threatened by. Can we see, by faith, who we are welcoming? Can we show the same trust that Joseph and Mary did? That is this year’s invitation and challenge. I believe we are, with God’s help, up for it!

A Happy and Holy Christmas to us all! In Christ,

A Saint Vincent De Paul (Cautionary) Christmas Tale: For confidentiality reasons the names in the stories below have been changed. At our recent meeting of St. Vincent de Paul, a member recently recalled overhearing a conversation after a recent Sunday Mass. In the conversation a reference was made that in Pocasset there are very few cases of poverty, this is a very’ well- to- do’ community. We strongly beg to differ. Some recent calls to our Helpline are as follows. His name is Steven, and one look at his clothing and the automobile he arrived in said Golf. He might very well be a member of our local Country Club. He called the Helpline requesting help with his overdue mortgage payment, due to COVID he had been laid off for several months. Things were stretched pretty tight now for Steven, his wife, and their two children. Alice called us because she and her 4 children were in need of winter clothing, food, Christmas Toys as well. Alice’s husband works in landscaping and is now laid off for the winter. There are not many jobs for him right now and he works at any work he might find every day. Twinning with another Conference of St. Vincent in a neighboring town, we were able to put together funds to help Steven and his family, then refer them to HAC and other organizations for future assistance. Some Gift Cards will help them with Christmas, Food, and some clothes. Alice met with two of our members at the Welcome Center and took some clothing we have stored in bins, was signed up to the local Food Pantry and with the ‘Farm to Families’ Program at Upper Cape Tech. Alice also received some diapers, wipes, and $100 in Gift Cards. The most difficult case last week involved a homeless man named Bob, living in his pickup truck at various spots along the Canal. Bob and his only remaining family member, his brother, lost their parents home after they both passed on. Bob lived with his brother for a time but they parted ways last year. Everything Bob could save from his family home is at a storage facility on the Boulevard or in his pickup truck. He attempts to live on $800 dollars a month. He has Afib, a leg injury, and early signs of BPH. A hard road lies ahead of Bob. Our first and strongest recommendation to Bob that he contact his physician then enter the ER did not go over very well. We were able to get Bob on the ‘waiting list’ at a shelter in Hyannis, a box of food from Upper Cape, Gift Cards and a coat. The storage company provided him with blankets to keep warm and dry in his truck. We, and the storage company, will keep in contact as best we can with Bob, and remaining in our prayers will hopefully get the help he needs. The point to all of this is twofold. First, we never know who that man, woman, couple, or family is at the other end of the pew, what they may be living with or where they are trying to get to. Second, any member of St. Vincent de Paul will tell you we have visited every little village of this town. There are people in need in Gray Gables, Wings Neck, and Pocasset; Bennett’s Neck, Scraggy Neck, Bourne Village or Cedar Point. In this beautiful town we so fortunately call home, there is always someone less fortunate, in need and reaching out. This is where the Giving Tree comes in. Your gracious response to this tree, your Gift Cards, the diapers, the wipes, along with your monthly donations are an absolute Blessing to our Conference. More importantly though, are the Blessings to those who silently reach out to St. John’s Church. From Our Hearts to Yours, THANK YOU!, and Merry Christmas!
