ChemChina Sets "Zero Wastewater Discharge" Target

On November 22, ChemChina launched a symposium on "zero discharge" for

chemical wastewater. Expert members of ChemChina addressed this topic and fully discussed the status of wastewater discharge in subsidiaries and technical so lut ions for typ ica l wastewater treatment. Directors from ChemChina Science and Technology Department, Production Operation Office, Planning and Development Department, and some professional water treatment firms of ChemChina attended the symposium. ChemChina deployed pilot enterprises and pilot projects for system wastewater treatment. The first pilot projects to be implemented and identified for pilot study

The new base mainly lays out a number of high-tech projects with high input and high output, as well as some recycling economy projects close to the industrial chain, which are all world class in size, international leading level, and have complete independent intellectual property with favorable features of high value-adding, energy savings, environmental friendliness, safety and reliability. The base, with an area of 3.88 km2, and a total investment of RMB24.5 billion, including three sectors (e.g. chemical new materials) and 15 projects in total, will be on stream in phases from 2009 and all completed by 2011. After completion, startup and reaching production standards, the annual sales income of the project will be approximately RMB30 billion, and the annual profit & tax will be about RMB3.6 billion.

On October 22, 2007, a kick-off meeting was held in Beijing to launch ChemChina's Enterprise Solutions projects. Pilot sites were announced to be taken among ten BlueStar subsidiaries, and investigation and study will be carried out in 3 overseas enterprises. From this day, BlueStar's representatives who are responsible for pilot sites will receive project training including procurement transformation, financial transformation, and so on. At the kick-off meeting, an Atos Origin team outlined the project, which covers KPI/BI, procurement transformation, financial transformation, continuous transformation, ERP templates, pilot sites, data transformation, data center,

new business model and practice and IT management, etc. The implementation will follow the best practices in the chemical field. The

projects are designed to help ChemChina operate its business in the same way as their counterparts global wide. Mr. Fan Xiaosen, vice president of ChemChina, expressed the expectations of President Mr. Ren Jianxin. He said that IT systems had to be one of the top priorities if the company wanted to grow further. Atos Origin has expressed full confidence in the completion of these pilot projects. CEO of Atos Origin Asia-Pacific Region, Liang Guozhen, said that in spite of many difficulties, Atos Origin team would always sincerely cooperate with those enterprises, together facing up to the risks and challenges, and ensure the projects successfully implemented.

Recent ly, the Dry ing Technology and Equipment Engineering Technology Research Center, which is sponsored by Tianhua Inst i tute of Chemica l Mach inery and Automation, was approved by the State Ministry of Science and Technology as one of the 12 newly established National Engineering and Technology Centers. Drying technology and equipment R&D is one of the traditional leading specialties of Tianhua Institute, whose drying techniques have been widely applied in petroleum, chemicals, metallurgy, construction materials, food, medicine, and many other industries. Since the Eighth Five Year Plan, Tianhua Institute has successively undertaken more than 50 national and provincial and ministerial projects, important for drying technology and equipment development and domestic production and research development. The center has won two state awards and 10 provincial and ministerial awards, gained 23 patents and now is applying for another seven. Tianhua Institute is strong in technology development and possesses complete experimental facilities, as well as comprehensive interdisciplinary advantages and the integration of production, study and research, so it can closely coordinate domestic scientific research institutes, universities and top enterprises to provide complete drying equipment R&D services for the industry in China. The establishment of the National Drying Technology and Equipment Engineering and Technology Research Center wi l l facilitate the integrated development of new products and new technologies, a pilot incubator, standardization construction, independent innovation and new achievement transformation, first-class engineering and technical personnel training and information exchange. It will effectively integrate superior drying equipment industry technology R&D and innovation, as well as the common and key technologies for influencing domestic drying equipment development of the industry, strengthen the intermediate links for scientific and technological achievements to be transferred into real productive forces, shorten the industrialization process, and fully upgrade overall technology and quality levels of drying equipment industry, leading the development of the industry and trends.

On October 27, 2007, a new list of China's most competitive companies was released in a meeting held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. ChemChina was listed 35th among China's top 500 companies and 100 leading businesses, 31 places higher than the ranking made last year by National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBSC). The data released this time were based on the overall performance of the companies over 2006. In order to have a deeper understanding of the conditions of China's leading companies, the latest statistical tools were used and many new factors were considered in the investigation. The ranking was made based on competitiveness, systematism in addition to the factors such as operating income and asset values. In addition, rankings were also made within industries. ChemChina was ranked, based on the composite index, 11th among the state-owned companies. In the chemical industry, ChemChina was ranked first among 121 candidates.

Aeolus Tire Joined ChemChina

On November 9 in Jiaozuo City, the People's Government of Jiaozuo in Henan

Province and China Haohua Chemical (Group) Corporation launched a strategic cooperation and a transition of Aeolus Tire's equity stake. Leaders of Henan Province and Haohua Corporation attended the ceremony. Aeolus Tire Co., Ltd. is one of the major tire production and export bases in China, possessing postdoctoral research centers and national level enterprise technical centers. The company is mainly engaged in manufacturing eight categories of products, including Henan and Aeolus engineering vehicle tires, all-steel truck radial tires, bias heavy truck tires, special tires, light truck

tires, agricultural vehicle tires and fork lift tires, with more than 660 product types. The annual output capacity exceeds 5,000,000 units with industrial value output above RMB6.0 billion. "Aeolus" is a well-known trademark in China. The company's leading product - "Aeolus" all-steel radial tire - is listed as a Top Brand in China. Before the transfer ceremony, the leaders and guests inspected the under-construction Aeolus project to create a base capable of annually 150,000 sets of engineering radial tires and 5 million sets of car tires, as well as visiting the on-stream line producing 1.2 million sets of radial tire and a comprehensive water utilization project.

Wuxi Resin Plant BalancesEnergy Conservation andEmission Reduction Efforts

To build an enterprise that conserves both energy and

environmental quality, Wuxi Resin Plant is speeding up a series o f techn ica l t rans format ion projects. The test center looked for energy-saving opportunities from bottles and tanks. They stored liquid samples with expiry of one year in a unified collection for the reuse in production, saving resin and bisphenol A raw materials worth nearly 10,000 RMB. To prevent leakage of raw materials during disassembly of valves, the epoxy plant used fixed barrels and a tube to draw the raw materials into a tank in order to avoid pollution from the materials getting directly into the sewer. At the same time, it launched a program of "small inventions, small innovations, small transformation, small design and small suggestions" series of energy conservation and environmental protection activities across the whole plant, efficiently getting good results in energy conservation and environmental protection.

T h i s year, in accordance with ChemChina's requirements, the

Petroleum & Gas Corporation (PGC) sets energy conservation and emission reduction as a top priority and achieves clear results in the following three ways. Firstly, increased examination strength and elevated awareness of energy conservation and emission reduction. This year in May, PGC conducted a thorough self-examination and remedial activity for energy conservation and emission reduction. The corporation organized a professional team to launch enterprise inspections and supervisions in order to identify weak links and problems for urgent action. The corporation also helped enterprises address the problems identified one by one. Secondly, strengthened training for energy conservation and emission reduction. This year in mid-June, PGC conducted training, inviting more than 10 domestic experts and scholars to guide the energy conservation and emission reduction work. Double Happiness Tire Launched "Manufacturer & VendorInteraction" Activity for Win-Win

Recently, Qingdao Yellowsea Rubber Group technicians

carried out a series of tests for the company's semi-steel radial tires, including shortening of curing time and testing of finished tires. A f t e r m o r e than 20 groups of high-speed and durable machine tests, they have iden-tified curing conditions of six specifications, which are now in pilot production stage. The first specifications in trial production account for more than 50 percent of the current semi-steel tire yield. As of November 20, Yellowsea Rubber has completed semi-s t ee l r ad i a l t i r e cu r i n g -time shortening test for six representative specifications

that have outstanding sales. According to technicians, in the course of pilot production, they will continue to randomly select tires for curing tests, and if no quality problems, the

next step will be carried out on other specifications. After all specifications successfully pass tire tests, they will be formally accepted as the new process conditions for production. Then the semi-tire steel production capacity will be increased by 25 percent or more, and the average production will exceed 7,500 tires per day.

On October 31, more than 40 outstanding dealers of Henan Zhengshang Trading Co. started a study tour of Double

The listing of these successful products also reflects the industrial advantages and status of the ChemChina Group Corporation. "China's Top Brand Product" is the highest award that the State General Administration of Quality Supervision grants to enterprise products and it is the most authoritative domestic brand evaluation activity. Begun in 2001, this is already the 7th annual event. Heart-stricken Hou Yi called his wife's name, looking for her here and there as the sky was darkening. When he looked up instinctively, to his surprise, he saw the moon was remarkably bright, and there were some movements in the moon. The figure was obviously that of his wife. He ran toward the moon, but his vision seemed to play tricks on him, and no matter how he tried he could not approach the moon. Hou Yi can't help but missed and yearned for his wife. He placed an incense burner table in the garden and set his wife's favorite cakes and fruits on the table. Hou Yi offered this sacrifice to his beloved wife Chang'e, who spent her days far away on the moon. From then on, when there was a full moon, Chinese people began to pray to Chang'e for luck and safety as they heard that Chang'e, once a warm-hearted woman, had become a goddess.

Today, the story about Chang'e's travel to the moon now has a new meaning. Chang'e Project became the name of the lunar

exploration committee when the lunar exploration proposal was approved. China's first lunar orbiter, Chang'e-I, was launched successfully at 18:05 on October 24, 2007. The President of ChemChina, Mr. Ren Jianxin, was invited to witness the whole event at the launch site. Mr. Ren, accompanied by his team, also attended other celebration activities. The Chang'e Project comprises the following stages: sending China's first probe into lunar orbit, mastering basic lunar exploration technology, launching China's first lunar exploration, and building a space system for lunar exploration for future work. After orbiting the moon for one year, the probe is designed to fall onto the moon and send back high-resolution pictures.

The Legend of Chang'e

In Chinese old mythology, there were ten suns circled around the earth and came out every day, which shining all at once made the earth

intolerably hot. There came a hero named Hou Yi, a great archer, who felt for the suffering people and took out his magic bow and shot down nine of the suns. He ordered the last sun to help people by rising and setting punctually. Hou Yi was so respected and admired by people that many young men came to learn archery from him. Among them, there was a mean man named Peng Meng. One day, Hou Yi was rewarded with a pill, an elixir of life, by the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens (the wife of the Jade Emperor) for the hard job he had done. As it was said, one could become a god and live in Heaven if he or she took the pill. However, Hou Yi was unwilling to leave his wife, Chang'e, alone, so he gave it to her and told her to find a good place for it. Their conversation was overheard by Peng Meng, who wanted to steal the pill and become a god. Three days later, Hou Yi went hunting with some of his apprentices. Peng Meng, with a sword in hand, approached Chang'e for the pill. Chang'e had no choice but to swallow the pill. At once, she began to rise upwards towards the sky. A Visit to BCMCBy Li Zhelun

After much anticipation I was eventually offered an opportunity to visit the new site of BlueStar (Beijing) Chemical Machinery Co., Ltd

(BCMC) where my mother works. As soon as I entered the premises with my classmates, I saw a new symbolic office building. It is much bigger than the office building I had seen in the old premises. We had prepared a formation demonstration and we performed it for the company staff. Perhaps as a result of stage fright, the show was not very successful, but we were glad it was highly praised by the audience. Afterwards, several managers showed us around the plant, helping us understand what a modern plant is like, how computers and other high technology were used to improve efficiency. In addition to convenience, the hi-tech also brings "challenges;" that is, the employees have to learn to use the new machines. We also saw an interesting video which explained the history and development of BCMC. The company has experienced its ups and downs for 40 years and contributed greatly to China's chemical industry. The visit was wonderful and helped me learn more about my mother's company. I am so proud of my mother.

Lingang has long been a mysterious place to me. Today, I am going to set my feet

on this place. Is there boundless sea, golden beach, hovering seagulls, colorful shells? Possibly, there is nothing but empty barren fields. Even so, I will not feel disappointed at all because I believe that, very soon, the emptiness will give way to refining machineries. The new silvery machines, together with pipes and containers will add new meaning to the place as well as to our lives. Our efforts and time will be well rewarded by the world renowned products we are going to make here…

I look out from the car. The boundless blue sea is there, glittering under the sun. The ships are sailing, like smart fish, swimming on the surface where the sky and the water meet. Seagulls brush past the sea and fly high into the sky. I roll down the window and feel greatly refreshed to feel the cool sea air on my face.

We are here, committed to building a new material base for my company. Meanwhile, we are building up a leviathan, a Goliath of economic muscle and might. I feel a surge of pride that flushes my face with its intensity. I feel I am getting involved with the place. From now on, we shall spend wonderful days here. I will make it a better place; make our company a better company.
