Northeast Recovery Learning Community
Calendar of Events for the Month of December
“We have multiplied our possessions but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom,
and hate too often. We’ve learned how to make a living but not a life. We’ve added years to life, not
life to years.”
˜George Carlin˜
Stress is not fun
I believe we can all agree with this statement. Since it is a month of observation regarding stress
relief, I can’t help but wonder about the fog thick paradox that is the Holiday season. Stress relief?
Holidays? Well it is possible to enjoy and find magic both within ourselves and the external joy given
by other people. For me, that defines this time of year. Expectations are a declaration we shout to the
heavens, with the hopes that somewhere, something has heard our cry to not only fulfill our wishes
but to simultaneously remove the anxiety of the days ahead. But it is the expectations which burden
us in the first place.
“Expectation is but a resentment in waiting”
I am unaware who was the first to utter this phrase but once heard, examined and cycled through the
mind, it is impossible to forget the gravity of this statement. Expectation can be the catalyst for stress,
anger, anxiety, depression, hopelessness, so on and so forth. So, what to do when the world is placing
its own expectations upon you? Relax, know your self-worth, take a breath and enjoy the moment. I
know it sounds too simple, but it is the cornerstone upon which I have built my life.
Find what gives you a moment of peace. Music, art, poetry, reading, running, walking, discussion,
learning, meditation, laughing, crying, loving. Whatever works for you, learn to carry the moment of
serenity with you into situations of duress. When you live within yourself and know what works,
work it. Find a way to enjoy a singular moment and expect nothing from it. You will be amazed.

I prayed for change, so I changed my mind
“I prayed for guidance and learned to trust myself
I prayed for happiness and realized I am not my ego
I prayed for peace and learned to accept others unconditionally
I prayed for abundance and realized my doubt kept it out
I prayed for wealth and realized it is my health
I prayed for a miracle and realized I am the miracle
I prayed for a soul mate and realized I am the One
I prayed for love and realized it’s always knocking, but I have to allow it in…
