The mission of Keep Orlando Beautiful is to engage individuals to take greater responsibility for improving their community environment through litter prevention,

waste reduction and recycling and beautification efforts.

Founded in 1987, Keep Orlando Beautiful, Inc. (KOB) is a nonprofit organization and certified affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Inc. (KAB). The program is

administered by the Streets and Stormwater Division of the Public Works Department of the City of Orlando. KOB offers a variety of much-needed community

improvement services that no other nonprofit or government agency in Orlando provides. Through our programs, we help create a healthier, safer, more livable

and sustainable community environment by teaching individual responsibility and engaging volunteers to help keep Orlando The City Beautiful. The reporting

period for this review coincides with KAB’s fiscal year, July 1st, 2011 to June 30th, 2012.

Through collective hands-on action, we teach our volunteers about good environmental citizenship and empower them with the knowledge and opportunity to

make a difference in improving the quality of life and the beauty and sustainability of our community. As one of nearly 600 certified affiliates of KAB, the nation’s

largest community improvement organization, we follow their guiding principles of individual responsibility, education, volunteerism and partnerships

(government, business, civic). We help provide sustainable solutions to improve the physical and visual aspects of our community and provide

the necessary tools so that individuals can have a direct influence, through their own actions, in the focus areas of litter prevention,

waste reduction and recycling and beautification.

Our MissiOn

Page 3: Message frOM MayOr Buddy dyer - Orlando · Cleanup. The Florida Coastal Cleanup is part of The Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, the largest beach and waterway

Our City motto, The City Beautiful, dates back to 1908 when Mayor William H. Jewell and the City alderman,

as they were known then, began a beautification movement. The City planted trees, flowers and shrubs and

encouraged businesses and residents to do the same. The beautification efforts were so successful and people

were so excited about the improvements that Mayor Jewell decided that the City’s motto, The Phenomenal City,

needed updating. A contest was organized and the winning entry was The City Beautiful.

Then, the unexpected happened. The new motto triggered another wave of beautification work and today the

work still continues.

Over the years, The City Beautiful motto has become an operating philosophy for Orlando. Our community

prides itself in our beautiful park and tree canopy, clean streets and clear lakes. And the partnership among City

government, businesses and residents that makes it all happen is stronger than ever. We know that a protected

environment is a key component of our outstanding quality of life and we’re working hard every day to continue

to make Orlando the best place to live, work and raise a family.

This report highlights the work of the Keep Orlando Beautiful

program and salutes the thousands of volunteers who contribute

to its success. My hope is that the following pages will inspire

even more residents and businesses to become part of The City

Beautiful legacy. Thank you for your continuing support.

Sincerely,

Mayor

Every year, our board selects one business from each of the six City Commissioners’ districts to receive a Beautification Award. Nominations are taken

all year long from City staff, board members, businesses and residents. Awards are presented to businesses that have shown exceptional improvement

and beautification, or that have kept a well-maintained property. Winners must possess an overall well-kept and aesthetically pleasing property that is

litter and graffiti-free and nicely landscaped. Award plaques are presented by the Mayor and Commissioners at a City Council meeting.

According to results of the Keep America

Beautiful Litter Index, Keep Orlando

Beautiful, the City of Orlando and its

citizens are successful in litter prevention

and reduction throughout the city. Overall,

Orlando was rated a 1.34 on a scale from 1-4

(range: 1= extremely clean to 4= extremely

littered). Each year, participants are asked to

assess their communities during a drive-by

examination of the same areas at the same

time of the year, to determine if the area is

more or less littered, to address problems

and measure progress. This year the districts changed and new routes were developed. Graffiti was added to

the index in order to assess its presence in the community. Graffiti is measured on the same scale as litter and

overall, Orlando was rated a 1.07 this year. KOB included graffiti as part of the litter index after starting the

City’s Graffiti Removal and Prevention program in 2007.

Keep Orlando Beautiful, Inc. conducted the litter and graffiti index during the summer of 2012:

The Graffiti Removal and Prevention Program

was implemented by Keep Orlando Beautiful on

March 1st, 2007 by establishing a hotline number

and online form for citizens and City employees

to report graffiti. Calls and reports of graffiti

are documented and reported to the Orlando

Police Department (OPD). KOB handles light

removal and reports to the appropriate owner for

abatement. Volunteers are also utilized to help

keep Orlando graffiti free.

Graffiti is any inscription, word, figure, painting or

other defacement that is written, marked, etched,

scratched, sprayed, drawn, painted, or engraved

on any public or private surface without the

owner’s permission. KOB respects and supports

creative expression – not vandalism.

CleanuPsThanks to the overwhelming support of dedicated

volunteers within the Orlando community, Keep

Orlando Beautiful had another very successful

year for litter and debris removal. Volunteers

stepped up and came out this year to help keep

our lakes and streets clean, beautify public

spaces and recycle.

KOB, along with the City of Orlando’s Streets and

Stormwater Division, coordinated several lake

cleanups throughout the year. On March 17th,

The City Beautiful Waterway Cleanup (formerly

referred to as the St. John’s River Celebration

Cleanup) was held at Lake Lucerne, Underhill and

Formosa. 146 volunteers removed 2,280 pounds

of litter and debris.

On September 17th, Keep Orlando Beautiful

coordinated its 11th annual Florida Coastal

Cleanup. The Florida Coastal Cleanup is part of The

Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup,

the largest beach and waterway cleanup program with

data collection in the world. Many lakes within Orlando

are part of a drainage system that consists of canals,

streams and rivers that eventually drain into the Florida

Bay or Atlantic Ocean. Keeping inland waterways litter-

free helps keep our oceans litter-free. This year the

water bodies included Lake Underhill, Ivanhoe, Lorna

Doone and Park Lake. 196 volunteers removed 2,320

pounds of litter and debris in just two hours.

In addition to park, neighborhood, street and lake

cleanups, Keep Orlando Beautiful also coordinates the

Adopt-A-Street and Adopt-A-Stop programs. Individuals,

groups, or families may adopt a street or LYNX bus stop

within the City of Orlando. They are obligated to cleanup

along their adopted street at least 6 times a year and

monthly or as needed at the bus stops. In return, they

are listed on our website and promoted at local events.

nBa all stars PartnershiP Orlando was the host city for the 2012 NBA All-Stars. The City of Orlando and Keep Orlando Beautiful

teamed up with the All-Stars organization as part of the NBA’s overall greening and sustainability efforts,

the NBA and Sprint offered fans the opportunity to responsibly recycle unwanted electronic products

such as mobile devices, computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers and fax machines at this one-day

recycling event.

The E Recycling event was the kick off to the weeklong string of events taking place in Orlando

surrounding the All-Stars. On Saturday, February 18th, hundreds of residents dropped off over 11 tons of

used electronics. Creative Recycling, Inc was on site to collect, package and take the electronics back to

their facility in Tampa where they refurbished and recycled all the parts. NBA All-Stars gave each carload

up to four Jam Session tickets, which was an interactive event for families prior to the game on Sunday,

February 26th.

The NBA All-Stars also invited Keep Orlando Beautiful’s top volunteers to recycle at the Amway Center on

Saturday February 25th for the All-Star competitions and on Sunday, February 26th for the main event and

game. The volunteers were the official Green Team of the NBA

All-Stars. They encouraged guests to recycle and

helped make sure anything that could be

recycled was placed in a bin.

BeautifiCatiOnIn partnership with several City Departments and outside organizations and in

particular Green-Up Orlando, KOB coordinated hundreds of volunteers who worked

on twelve beautification projects throughout the year. Part of KOB’s, along with Keep

America Beautiful’s mission, revolves around a core belief that beauty is a silent but

powerful force that makes communities safer, healthier and more livable. Citizens,

government and businesses uniting to create better communities are key. We know

that when a community and its residents unite with beautification as a common

purpose, transformations occur not only in the physical surroundings, but in the hearts

and minds of everyone involved.

refresh OrlandOColor Wheel Paint demonstrates its commitment to community service by holding an

annual event they call Refresh Orlando, an event that brings together local businesses

and hundreds of volunteers of all ages to repaint, refresh and reinspire special Orlando

landmarks in need of a facelift. On March 10th, 2012, the Downtown Recreation Center at

649 W. Livingston was repainted. Color Wheel Paint donated approximately 230 gallons

of paint for the project and all of the painting supplies. Braven Painting, a licensed and

bonded professional painting company based in Orlando, donated all of the labor to prep

the buildings as well as completion of the painting for areas that volunteers could not reach.

250 volunteers came out and painted the main building and two racquet ball courts. Golden

Corral kick-started everyone’s morning by donating breakfast and beverages.

The event was also sponsored by Power 95.3, WFTV Channel 9, WRDQ Central Florida’s

TV 27 and was in partnership with The City of Orlando and Keep Orlando Beautiful. This

event gave the Downtown Rec Center a much needed make over. The Rec Center houses

the Parramore Kidz Zone Program and a Pottery Studio.

sChOOl envirOnMental CluBsUnique to Keep Orlando Beautiful is the School

Environmental Club program, which was initiated

in 1988 to promote environmental citizenship in

kindergarten through eighth grade, and now high school

students. Clubs meet monthly to participate in litter

prevention, waste reduction/recycling and beautification

efforts. The Clubs were asked to set a goal and create

a project board on how they achieved it. The project

boards were displayed and presented to Keep Orlando

Beautiful by the Club members at the end of the year.

The winning Club won a trip to SeaWorld Orlando for

an education experience. Thanks to SeaWorld for their

generous donation! 2nd and 3rd place won monetary

awards to use however they’d like.

Each year the Clubs are also asked to submit a Central

Florida Fair project. For the 2011/2012 school year, the

Clubs were asked to create a terrarium. A terrarium is

a small enclosure or closed container in which selected

living plants are kept and observed. A certain type of

environment may be created, such as a rainforest or

desert. A display of their projects is exhibited at the Central

Florida Fair each year. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and an honorable

mention are awarded prize ribbons and cash prizes.

Amazing and creative terrariums were also submitted

by Esteem Academy Middle School, Audubon Park

Elementary School and Azalea Park Elementary School.

All students received tickets to the fair, compliments of the

Central Florida Fair!

KOB offers free presentations to schools on litter

prevention, waste reduction and recycling. Ashli

Conrad is KOB’s educational specialist. She delivers

a fun, interactive learning experience. KOB also has a
