Hello Everyone,

On Monday of this week the entire College staff attended a professional development day run by Nairn Walker. This PD was designed to encourage College staff to better understand the people and community that we are a part of. Throughout the day many very insightful discussions were held throughout the room with many staff open to the possibility that we as a College can sometimes do things better if we better understand our community. I know that there were times when our own Campus has slipped in what we would consider ‘efficiency mode’ rather than trying to appreciate the difficulties that some in our community face. The PD that we all went to and participated in was a great step in the ongoing journey of always trying to do things better.

Athletics Day On Tuesday the College again got together to participate in the College wide Aths & Fun day at the Carmody Athletics Track in Moe. A great day of fun was had by all in beautiful warm sunny weather. It was a little disappointing to see that the numbers from all Campuses was down from previous years. However those that went thought it was a fantastic day with the emphasis on having fun rather than serious athletics. A big thank you Nada from Morwell Campus and the PE staff at the different Campuses for organizing the day.

Student Representative Council Conference Kurnai College again hosted the SRC Conference at Federation University last week. The conference was attended by a number of secondary schools in our area and the students participated in a number of workshops to prepare them to participate in leadership forums that will be held in the future. It was encouraging to see our young student leaders talk openly of their concerns for the future as well as what they as young people can do about this.

Student Representative Council

The annual Vic Student Representative Council Regional Conference occurred

on Thursday 14th of April and Kurnai College was lucky enough to be this year’s

host. With a wide range of students from many different schools coming

together at the Federation University, the event was a success. Kurnai College

was well represented with 10 students from the University Campus and

students from both Churchill and Morwell Junior Campuses attending. The

energetic and fun leaders made it easy for students to look in depth at their

schooling experiences and discover ways their school can be improved.

ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT:

School success starts with attendance

Remember, if your child must miss school, speak with the classroom teacher as early as possible. We strive to provide a welcoming and supportive environment, if you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let an Advocate, Principal or other relevant staff member know so we can work together to get your child to school every day.

Interesting facts:

95% attendance during one school year equals 9 days absent

which is equivalent to approximately two weeks away from

school.

An attendance record of 90% might seem good but is equal to

one day missed per fortnight. If this continues from Years 7 to

11, a total of six month’s education will be lost.

An attendance record of 80% might seem acceptable but is equal to one day missed per week. If this continues

from Years 7 to 11, a total of one year’s education will be lost.

Yr11 Outdoor and Environmental Studies Surf Camp The two classes combined to attend an overnight surf camp at Phillip Island. Students luxuriously stayed in cabin accommodation, where they also displayed their masterchef-esque cooking skills using the park barbeques for dinner. Students participated in two surf sessions, where most of them were introduced to basic surfing techniques. Conditions were less than ideal for both sessions; the first session produced minimal waves, whilst the second session resulted in chop and whitewash! Students did not complain and gave both sessions a go. Students also had a look at the surf museum and had a stroll along the nobbies boardwalk. Students seemed to enjoy themselves and were well behaved.

UNIVERSITY CAMPUS - PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS General News

On the 15th of April, thirteen of Kurnai College’s finest tennis players took to the Traralgon Courts to mix it with the best in the region.

The Senior Boys’ team was lead superbly by Captain Dan Schneider who had close losing sets throughout the day. Zac Cantrill had the most success in the senior team winning both of his singles rubbers blasting winner after winner with his Nadal like forehand. Ryan Mayo, Zequaden Hanratty and Joel D’amico all fought gallantly throughout the day.

The Middle school boys’ team fought well throughout the day mixing it with some very good opponents. Alexander Devonshire captained the side with ferocity as the boys tried to intimidate their first opponents with big serving and plenty of swagger. This was not enough unfortunately as they lost their first match by a handful of points. This caused the team to rethink their approach as they battled against other teams for the rest of the day winning just under half of their sets. Sam Findlay, Aidyn Sheers and Thomas Hayes showed they were all more than competitive throughout a tough day of tennis.

The girls started their campaign slowly with late fill-ins making up the numbers. Against strong opposition the girls never gave up with German sensation Alena Amberger leading the team through some respectable losses. The girls were able to improve greatly throughout the day culminating in a match against Lavalla to see who would finish fifth. It came down to the last 4 points with Kurnai winning 2 out of the 4 sets and a countback was needed. Unfortunately the girls went down by 3 points however were ecstatic to have won a couple of sets and improve their tennis greatly. Chloe Answorth, Elizabeth Hodgson and Hayley Huizer were able to fight right to the end in their matches, channeling the tenacity of French star Amelie Mauresmo.

All students represented Kurnai College to a very high standard and should be pleased with the goals they achieved throughout the day.
