2017 Trinity Term No. 08 Newsletter 23.6.17

Key Values:

Innovation, Confidence, Aspiration, Respect, Enthusiasm Dear Parents and Children

This week the Headteacher’s report includes information on:- Staffing, EYFS Bid Announcement, Uniform, Countdown - Head’s Challenge, George Milner, Toe to Toe initiative, Hull City Pro Visit, KS2 Opro Mouthguards and Headteachers Commendations.

Thank you for your ongoing support this term. It has been such a busy and thriving term so far with sports days, reports, forest school, den day, visits and external visitors, performance opportunities, the art exhibition and enrichment events and still to come this term, are our prize giving assemblies where we celebrate our pupils achievements.

Staffing Staffing for September is currently being confirmed, as I mentioned on my previous newsletter. However, I am now in a position to clarify the staffing for next year in most year groups. Nursery: Mrs Escreet (who joins the team in September) Reception: Mr Dyson Year One: Mrs Hamilton and Mrs Maltby Year Two: Mrs Dent (clarification on the staffing for Year 2 is imminent and not yet confirmed due to pupil numbers not yet being confirmed) Year Three: Mrs Silk and Miss Rowley Year Four: Mr North Year Five : Mr Whitfield and Mrs Hazel Year Six: Mrs Smith and Mrs Maynard We have also appointed Mrs Heng, who will join the staff in September part time and brings with her an extensive IT background.

EYFS bid announcement I am also thrilled to announce that we have secured a bid for quarter of a million pounds for our new EYFS outdoor learning environ-ment. This includes modification to our existing reception space including interior works: new toilets in the classroom, bi-folding doors across the back of the classroom, the interior wall being removed to create one, open plan space and freestanding IT. The exterior space includes a full re-vamp of the outdoor learning environment (the nursery and reception divide will be removed) and opening up of the woodland at the rear of the nursery playground currently. This will also be accessible through a gate on the KS1 woodland for the whole school to use the forest space, across the curriculum. Planning is currently in process and works are likely to commence in September. The projected completion time is 8-10 weeks and the outdoor environment will run as a live site with parts of the outdoor space available to our pupils at all times.

We are also pleased to announce that we are investing in new furniture and resources for Explorers and Adventurers next year. This remodelling will be done in the Autumn term, further information will follow. We will be taking steps and working closely with con-tractors to minimise this disruption and further details will be sent out to keep you informed of changes.

Thank you for your confidence and support with what promises to be a fantastic addition to our school's learning environment.

Countdown – Head’s Challenge

This week Year 6 played Countdown. In 30 seconds Felix was able to work out a solution 1 mark wide.

10+5 = 15 x 9 = 135, 3-1 = 2, 135 x 2 = 270 – (5+1) = 264

Felix Parker (30 seconds)

Can anyone work out a way to get to 263?

George Milner

After winning various junior golf competitions in previous years, George recently took the big step up into open age golf playing against men of all ages, on Sunday June 18th he won his first competition by a margin of 5 shots. Well done George.

Toe to Toe initiative

At the end of term we are taking part in the Toe to Toe initiative where children’s shoes are donated to a child in Africa via the wonderful work of Sal’s Shoes. A letter has been emailed to parents and details are on the website and social media. We ask that on the last day of term, pupils take off their school shoes, place them on their desk and leave school barefoot. The shoes will then be donated to a barefoot child in Africa via the wonderful work of Sal’s Shoes. Pupils can bring in another pair of shoes to change into for their journey home after walking out of school barefoot. There is no obligation to take part but we would very much like to support this charity and the work they carry out in finding new feet for pre-loved children’s shoes. To find out more about Sal’s Shoes, you can visit their website www.salsshoes.com or Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/salsshoes1.

Hull City Pro Visit

We welcomed Hull City’s ex-skipper to school last week, Andy Dawson. Andy spent an hour with Jack and Reuben, who are signed to Hull next season, as well as making Mrs Dent’s day! He spent a lot of time in Year 2 with both Mrs Dent and Charles (no surprises there!)

KS2 Opro Mouthguards

You have all received information from school informing you of the necessity to provide mouth guards for rugby and hockey in KS2 (except boys in Y3 who play Tag Rugby). OPRO, whose details you received earlier in the term, can now provide mouth guards with the school logo printed on. When ordering, please follow the drop down menu links to select this. For all parents who have already ordered mouth guards online, you can change your order to this new design, if you so wish. If you need any

clarification about this then please contact the school office.

I hope to see you all at the fete tomorrow, and next week, KS1 Prize Giving, KS1 Sports Day and Year 5/6 Production.

.Headteacher’s Commendation

For their AMAZING organisation of Den Day.

Thank you for your passion and attitude Miss Rowley and endless drive, vision and organisation Mr Dyson. Dream team! #teamprep

What special memories for Reception, Year 1 and their male role models and I hear not a mobile phone was in sight until 2.30pm!

I would like to nominate Maggie Mountifield. Her hard work and stickability this week across many areas of the provision. Her reading skills and spontaneous recall of high frequency words has greatly improved spelling. Beautiful neat writing and having tried so very hard with lots of creative work.

Foundation Stage News

This week Mr Dyson and I have been making our end of key stage judgements regarding the Early Years Profile Scores for each of

our Reception children as they move up into Key Stage One. As we have evaluated the evidence gathered throughout the year,

and made our final assessments, we have been overwhelmingly proud of the effort and progress made by each Reception child,

and by the results that they have obtained. I would like to thank all members of staff who have been involved in the education of

these children during their time in our Foundation Stage, for all their hard work and dedication. I would also like to thank our

parents for their supportive and enthusiastic involvement in our educational partnership and, most of all I would like to congrat-

ulate the children on their interest, enthusiasm, open-mindedness and hard work as they complete this first milestone in their

educational journey.

We were also delighted to see so many of our forthcoming pupils and their parents attending Tuesday afternoon’s Move-Up ses-

sion. Our soon to be Explorers are beginning to develop a little familiarity with their new setting, and our forthcoming Adventur-

ers have enjoyed investigating the “big room” and investigating their new equipment and resources. Mr Dyson and Mrs Dartnall

spent a delightful afternoon with next year’s Reception children, and are very much looking forward to working with them in

September. We are also thrilled to have have now received confirmation that our planned development of the Foundation Stage

outdoor area and reception access has been approved, so watch this space for more exciting news!

Den Day

A glorious June morning, as I park the fully laden school minibus by the entrance to the woods at Meaux Abbey Farm. In just under three hours’ time this haven of tranquillity and home to Humber Forest School will once more become besieged by 97 adventurous Hull Collegiate children and Fathers on their immortal quest to be championed as the ultimate den makers – Let Den Day commence! Den Day is a fundraising event on behalf of the international charity Save the Children UK. This year Den Day took place on Friday 16th June. Schools and groups across the UK were motivated to take part in an awesome, creative, fundraising adventure! Quite simply – build dens together, and raise money to change children’s lives. Mr Dyson, Reception Teacher, Forest School and Outdoor Learning Coordinator at Hull Collegiate Preparatory School in the East Riding of Yorkshire initiated today’s event said “having heard of Den Day through the national media and realising it coincided with Father’s Day weekend, I had the idea to combine both events as a transition project between Reception and Year One classes for children and their father’s to work together.” “Den building is surely what forests were made for and it has been a pleasure to observe the commitment and competitive nature of our Reception and Year One fathers as they worked together in teams with their child to simply recapture their own childhood experiences and reconnect with nature to build dens.” “Today our pupils and fathers have had fun, getting creative and learning about the importance of shelter for children across the world as they built their own. They also raised a substantial £755 in the process.” It is widely acknowledged of the health and social benefits to learning outdoors. Being outdoors offers many stimulating play opportunities, the materials available outdoors such as soil and leaves, sticks and stones are ideal for children to manipulate and experiment with. There are interesting and unusual places to hide, climb and balance with a range of elements that encourage imaginative, challenging and creative play. Den building allows children to interact with natural elements. They learn to negotiate, problem solve, resolve, manage and work as a team. Learning to work together can be difficult at any age but den building can be a way of learning to cooperate. During this process they are often open to other children’s suggestions and learn from their own mistakes. Assessing Risk and seeking opportunity- Outdoor environments cannot be controlled in the same way as indoor environments. Control over an environment will not necessarily result in an increase in safety. As practitioners we aim to expose our groups to risk but control that risk preventing serious harm. Faced with low level danger, children learn very quickly how to take risks and understand the result of their actions. Learning to adjust to change and uncertainty is an essential part of growing up. Children who do not experience these things do not build up an understanding of how to calculate risk and are more likely to put them-selves in danger. Den building naturally has an element of risk that children can explore and experiment with. The planning and preparation for this fundraising event has taken the best part of three months and has only been made possible with the generosity and support of the following companies and individuals.

Cindy Stephenson, Director of Humber Forest School together with her colleagues Chris and Sam supported the event by helping to facilitate Den Day at their woodland home and donated their fees to the charity. I would also like to thank the farmer Andrew Beaulah who kindly allowed his woodland to be used for Forest School activities.

Alan Acklam, Director of Acklams coaches who provided free transportation on the day between Hull Collegiate school and Meaux Abbey Farm.

Sue Fletcher and Chartwells Independent caterers who provided the woodland feast.

And finally Frederick Dale, Community Speaker on behalf of Save the Children who spent the entire day with us. Frederick Dale, launched the proceedings by providing a brief talk about the material aid that Save the Children provide to children and families in an emergency. The importance of raising awareness of the charities fundraising endeavours and why so many individuals go without basic shelter on a daily basis. He explained how the money raised will help the charity to make life better for vulnerable children all over the world, how it will help to save children’s lives, and make sure they get the things they need to grow up healthy and happy, like a safe place to shelter.

Save the Children was the first major international organization established in 1919 to focus specifically on children’s rights. They are a pioneering organization in creating, defining and championing the concept of children’s rights; this continues to be the bed-rock of their work today. Their vision is a world in which every child attains the right to survival, protection, development and participation. For example: delivering some of the RIGHT’S OF THE CHILD. A right is a moral or legal entitlement to have or do something such as:

The right to food and water

The right to shelter (a home)

The right to love and security By now anticipation was running high with speculation of the activities and challenges that laid ahead. Splitting into three groups, with each group led by one of the Forest School practitioners, our intrepid den makers were shown how to tie an array of basic knots and apply these skills to work with their child to make a woodland picture frame for their Father’s Day gift. The children then used a combination of found woodland items and decorative braids to decorate the frames. Erecting a simple tarpaulin shelter was next on the agenda, followed by making a wooden disk name badge using a hand drill before breaking for lunch. A hearty lunch of jacket potato, hot dog sausages and baked beans with cheese and a salad accompaniment, with fruit and flap-jack had been prepared and cooked on the open fire by Sam and Miss Rowley which was a no mean feat when catering for 97 people. Following lunch, our den makers set of for a brisk walk to our second woodland plantation which had been prepared with a se-lection of cut trees and logs to facilitate the building of dens. With a 40minute build time our six teams quickly set to work scav-enging for tarpaulins, rope and additional props. It was inspiring to be able to stand back and observe the interactions between fathers and their children. All of our den makers were fully immersed in the activity with children scavenging and fetching woodland materials and their fathers applying a variety of skills to design and create masterpieces of woodland architecture. Hobbit holes rose out of the ground, nomadic tents sus-pended between trees housed modern day woodland gadgets with light switches, television sets, fires, leaf carpets and log so-fas. I am sure from the accompanying photos that you will all agree how individual and unique in design and creativity the six dens were. It was a travesty that time quickly ran away and we only had a brief opportunity to view each other’s designs before having to dismantle and pack away. Such was the level of energy and competitive enthusiasm the children and Fathers were eager to learn of which team had been championed as the overall winner. Sadly after much deliberation, cogitation and digestion of designs the judges were and still are unable to reach a conclusion which leaves us with no option but to announce that all six groups can claim to be master den champions 2017. It now stands at 1.40 metres.

ISA National Athletics Championships that took place on Monday June 19 at the Alexander Stadium Birmingham

On Monday 19 of June, Felix Parker, Toby Greensmith, Tom Watson from Year 6 and Tom Rennardson, Xavier Goddard, Harrison Kell, Hannah Black from Year 4, competed in the ISA National Athletics Championships. Each of the seven regions-North, Midlands, East Anglia, London North, London West, London South and South West had already held their own athletics meetings prior to this day. The seven pupils from HCS had already competed in the North round and got through to represent the North in this championship, which in itself is already a fantastic achievement!

Throughout the day the pupils showed a high level of maturity and enthusiasm. Felix parker competed in a very hard long jump competition coming 7th overall, Tom Ren-nardson came 3rd in the high jump, jumping 1.20m. Toby won his high jump competition, jumping 1.40m which is 7cm off the championship record. Hannah Black and Harrison Kell both competed in their 600m races, the races were fast and clearly showed the high level of competition. Hannah came 7th in her race and Harrison 13th, but both beat the other North runner in their race which is a personal achievement, as they had previously come 2nd to them. Toby also ran a strong 600m race and came 4th, putting in a fantastic finish to overtake 2 people before the line. Xavier competed in the 4x100m relay, which was made up with other pupils from the North, he ran the 3rd leg well and overall they came 5th.This is a great result as it is always hard to compete in a relay with people you have just met! Tom Watson ran the 4x100m for his age group, running the a fast 1st leg and giving them the start they needed to come 2nd overall.

Overall the day was full of success, both on and off the track, with new friendships being formed and a strong feel-ing of sportsmanship from all our pupils, as they supported each other throughout the day. Well done! Ann Harvey

Dangers of Swimming in Open Water

On Wednesday, an assembly will run for all pupils in Years 5 – 12. This will be led by Rebecca Ramsay, from Chorley, in Lancashire, who set up the campaign Doing It For Dylan, following the tragic death of her 13-year-old son. Dylan Ram-say drowned in the summer of 2011 as he tried to swim back to safety after he jumped into the water at Hill Top Quarry, near Chorley. Despite being a strong swimmer, he quickly got into difficulties and drowned when his body went into shock because of the plummeting water temperature. He was a young, fit and healthy boy who was a strong swimmer, yet he struggled and was unable to reach safety when he jumped into the quarry. Since then, Rebecca has worked tirelessly to raise awareness and to educate young people about the dangers of swimming in open water. Working on her own, she has toured the country giving talks in schools and to youth groups without any external support. This will no doubt be a hard-hitting assembly but very timely ahead of the summer holidays and warmer weather. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact Mr Wainman in school.

Hull 10K - Running for Hope 2017

On Sunday 18 June a team of staff ran the Hull 10K to raise money for Candlelighters in memory of Hope Rooms who died peacefully in her sleep at her Swanland home in Febru-ary 2016, two years after being diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer when she was 12. Hope's inspiring attitude towards her illness led to her being named the Hull Daily Mail's Pride of East Yorkshire in 2014 and Hope won the na-tional United Learning’s Young Hero Award in 2015. An emotional day for Hope's proud parents Julie and David who also ran the race. The date was a particularly special one as Hope would have celebrated her 16th birthday and it was also Father’s Day. The support has been huge and to date they have raised over £3000 for Candlelighters, a charity providing practical & emotional support to children fighting cancer in Yorkshire. Rainbow of Tranby

Due to the popularity of the art exhibition we thought you would like to view the photographic images from the Founda-tion art installation ‘Rainbow of Tranby’. The work involved children from Reception, Adventurers and Explorers over two half days being photographed in a variety of locations around the school grounds. The children posed in a rainbow of col-ours as a pastiche of Spencer Tunicks ‘Sea of Hull’ art installa-tion created for Hull City of Culture and currently on display at the Hull Ferens Art Gallery. The children wore their favourite colour clothing and had matching face paint applied to their arms, legs and faces. We hope you like the beautiful colours of the children photographed in a variety of landmark loca-tions around school. Which one is your favourite?
