World Teachers’ Day/Day for Daniel

I know Carolyn Robinson has written to you regarding our observance of Day for Daniel on Friday, 27 October. Students were encouraged to wear something red and bring along a gold coin donation. We also celebrated World Teachers’ Day to say thank you for the great work that our teachers do every day for our students.

Anthony Gribbin Principal

Active School Travel This week is Ride Safely to School Week. Many of our students gathered at Mott Park to walk or ride together to school as an ‘Active School Travel’ team. This week our school leaders were again out in force to stamp our school travellers. We want to encourage all students and families to support this program for its wide ranging benefits to all. Musicfest This week our Senior concert performed at Musicfest at Calamvale Community College. They presented three pieces:

Grand March: The Australian Land

Bravo!

Ogopogo These were conducted by our Instrumental music teacher, Mr Tony Bryer. The student performed beautifully and received a ‘silver’ award for their efforts. Adjudicators comments: ‘You looked fabulous’ ‘Grand opening’ ‘Watch your excellent conductor carefully’ ‘Thanks Holland Park for a Very Entertaining program’ Thank you so much to Mr Bryer for his hard work and support for our band members! Thank you also to all parents who willingly transport their child to practices and performance. ‘What’s your Mission’ - Youth Change Agents Over the past week or so we have conducted a selection process for our year 5 girls to participate in an all girls workshop targeting both ‘entrepreneurial’ and ’STEM’ skills. The girls had to submit an application that demonstrated commitment to their studies in particular, Maths and Science. This week 15 successful students have been involved in a 21/2 day program at Corinda State High School that will help build and support our girls creative and problem solving. These students will gain life long skills such as:

Problem solving skills for the future

Team work

Leadership

Social enterprisers skills

Business model and prototype skills Over the course of the program Mrs Williams, Mrs Whittaker, Ms Young and I have had the privilege to attend some of the days and to see our fabulous girls in action. Our girls engaged in a wide range of exciting tasks whilst building their team skills that will led to a final ‘pitch’ presentation on Friday. Our team included the following year five girls, Lily B, Kiri B, Isabella F, Lucinda G, Emily G, Sophie K, Lydia M, Mary M, Claire P, Dorothy R, Stella R, Emily S, Priya c, Jessica W. Thanks to all of the girls for their hard work and commitment to this program. They really did our school great credit. Good job girls! Leigh Harrod Deputy Principal

FROM THE SCHOOL LEADERS Hello. My name is Jasmin W and I’m one of the Wilson House Captains. I love this job for many reasons firstly my favourite thing of all time is sport and I get to inspire and help other students participating in sport events. It’s rewarding bringing kids together and encouraging those who are not confident in competing and running. Being a house captain means being a leader and if you can be a role model that’s just a plus. That’s just a couple of reasons why I love being a Wilson House Captain. Jasmin W 6NA Hi, my name is Georgia M and I’m a student council representative for 6SE. I love being a student council rep because it gives me a lot of responsibilities. At meetings, I am able to share my ideas with the student council members. I enjoy running the Active School Travel tables with friends and watching everyone arrive at school in an active way, I love being a role model for younger students. Overall I am very proud to represent my class and school as a student council representative. Georgia M 6SE

WHAT IS LIFE EDUCATION?

Life Education motivates and empowers young people to make smart life choices for a healthy future.

MODULE: ‘HAROLD’S FRIEND SHIP’ – PREP Children explore: how to build friendships and care for others, feelings and emotions, how nutrition and physical activity affects how we think and feel, safe and unsafe situations and early warning signs and safe places and people to turn to for help. MODULE: ‘READY, STEADY GO’ - YEAR 1

This program focuses on the benefits of physical activity, safety strategies in different environments, as well as what our body needs to be healthy including nutrition, water, and sleep.

MODULE: GROWING GOOD FRIENDS –YEAR 2

This animated story takes us to familiar surroundings where students can: explore what health messages mean, identify safety signs, recognize how physical activity and nutrition contribute to a healthy lifestyle and explore how positive relationships benefit our health and wellbeing.

MODULE: ‘ALL SYSTEMS GO’ – YEARS 3

Inside a futuristic machine ‘The Venture’, the Captain and his crew take the class on a tour of the human body. Travelling through the blood we explore the functions of various body parts and how magnificent the human body really is. The students discuss issues and engage in activities centred on peer pressure, second hand smoking, safety with medicines, factors that influence the function of body systems.

MODULE: ‘HAROLD’S DIARY’ – YEAR 4

The Children are invited to read Harold’s Diary as he shares stories relating to bullying, feelings, developing coping strategies, safety with medicines and the importance of making healthy food choices.

MODULE: ‘bCYBERWISE’ – YEARS 5

The Children explore ’netiquette; (Internet etiquette) and Cybersafety issues through role-play and interactive activities. They explore how to establish positive respectful relationships and to report negative experiences to a responsible adult that they trust.
