Welcome to the Easter edition of the Sports ALIVE! Club Development Newsletter. I hope everyone has a great break and comes back fired up for the winter sporting season to start!

In the past few months, there have been many happenings in our “world of sport” - from summer sporting season finals to new Club Development workshops being presented to a review of the City’s financial situation (including funding our sporting community facilities and programs).

Unfortunately, there were very few sporting clubs that participated in the Community Summit, which may impact on the funding of future programs or projects. The results of this review will be known in the near future and fingers are crossed that the rest of the community values the local sporting culture and the benefits it provides.

On a more positive note, the KidSport program reached a huge milestone this month, with the City passing the $200,000 mark for approved vouchers since the

program began in April 2012. This is a massive achievement and shows just how much the sporting community has benefitted from the KidSport program.

The City is currently into its 3rd round of funding, with the original grant for $70,000 over 3 years being expended in just one year! We are hoping that the partnership between the City and the State Government continues, to ensure our sporting clubs can continue to provide services to those kids that may have not been able to afford it previously

More information is included in this newsletter about upcoming events and further details will be forthcoming as the dates get closer. But if you would like information about these or any other topic, please don't hesitate to let me know. We are always looking for topics that are useful to sporting clubs and are of interest to the local sporting community in general.

As always, I look forward to catching up with you all and helping your club to be as great as you and your members want it to be!

Step Five: Know the Grant

Before you start a grant application, read the guidelines – well! Over 70% of grants not approved are reported to be because the application

didn’t meet the criteria. Reading the guidelines makes a lot of sense and saves a lot of time in whether you will need to go to all the trouble

of writing out the grant application or not. Most grant makers also encourage you to contact them by phone to discuss your project and

this will mean they are familiar with your application when it is presented to them at the decision making meeting. This is a step often

overlooked but vital to ensure that successful grant applications are developed.

10 TIPS TO GET MORE GRANTS! Thanks to Bonnie Stafford, Sun City Christian Centre

win a grant, there are some things that you can do to increase your chances of

being successful. Here is the first of 10 tips that will assist grant applications to

Did you know?:

♦ It takes 3,000 cows to supply the NFL with enough leather for a year’s supply of

footballs.

♦ Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr. didn’t miss a game in 16 years. He

played in 2,632 consecutive games from April 30, 1982 to Sept. 19, 1998.

♦ Shaquille O’Neal wore size 22 shoes. He put on a brand new pair before every

game.

UPCOMING: Sporting Community Security Forum When: Wednesday 15 April 2015, from 5.30pm

Where: CGG Function Room, Cathedral Avenue

In light of the recent (and not so recent!) vandalism and thefts that are impacting on the City’s

sporting community, a forum for sporting groups is being held to discuss this issue and to provide

some options that may assist in reducing the risk of further damage to clubs.

The aim of the forum is to provide an opportunity for clubs to discuss amongst themselves what

issues they face and what steps have been taken by clubs individually to prevent / reduce the risk

of crime occurring at their facilities.

Then from these discussions, it is hoped that clubs can work together to implement a few of these

ideas quickly to help clubs across the City to be more secure in the immediate term. By

implementing a series of security measures across a number of clubs as opposed to a small area,

the success of these strategies can be increased dramatically. For longer term solutions,

collaboration between clubs is vital and will assist in obtaining the support of other agencies.

If your club would like attend this forum, please RSVP by 2 April to the City’s Sport & Recreation

Club Development Officer on 9956 6968 or at [email protected] .

UPCOMING: Mid West / State Sporting Association Networking Event When: Mid 2015

Where: CGG Function Room, Cathedral Avenue

The inaugural Mid West / State Sporng Associaon Networking Event, is planned to be held in

the City Func3on room in the middle of the year to host representa3ves of SSAs to meet local

members, representa3ves of spor3ng peak bodies and officers from the City of Greater Geraldton.

The aim of the event is for SSA representa3ves to meet with club officials and members of their

sports, City Officers, and other peak spor3ng groups from the Mid West, in an informal, relaxed

environment as happens regularly in the metropolitan area.

This event hopes to break down some barriers between the relevant par3es and allow for more

specific discussions a:er the event. The event will also serve to further develop the goodwill

between the CGG, regional clubs, spor3ng peak bodies and their representa3ves locally.

To make this event happen, I am hoping to hear from any Regional Spor3ng Associa3ons (RSAs)

that are interested in being involved and having their SSA visit coincide with this 3me. If you’re RSA

is interested, please let me know asap to organise with the SSA.

Hopefully this is just one of many 3mes where State associa3ons can visit Geraldton to offer

support to local clubs in their home environment.

SportingAchievementGrantsSportingAchievementGrantsThe Greater Geraldton Sporting Achievement Grants program is a sport specific grants initiative managed through the Mid West Sports Federation (MWSF) in partnership with the City of Greater Geraldton. The purpose of the program is to provide a much needed boost to sporting participants within the Mid West region and to meet some of the travel expenses associated with making a state or national team.

Since the program inception, 49 athletes from 10 different sports have received nearly $14,000 in funding with the proud recipients stating that the money was going to be invaluable in enabling them to compete at their various sporting events around Australia and the world. Here are just some of the amazing athletes the City has been able to support:

Application forms can be downloaded from the City’s website and once the forms have been completed, they can be submitted to the Mid West Sports Federation.

For further information, please contact the MWSF on 9956 2100, or the City of Greater Geraldton’s Sport and Recreation Club Development Officer on 9956 6968.

Latest from the “Snippets Sessions”

It is a common theme evident in surveys and from other feedback, that spor3ng clubs:

- Find it hard to a@ract volunteers due to having a lack of available 3me;

- Find that nothing seems to ever be decided or get done;

- Don’t seem to leave evidence of reasons for past decisions being made; or

- Mee3ngs drag on and on.

Many of these issues can be traced back to

clubs simply having poor mee3ng processes.

The latest Snippets Session held at the City

tackled this exact problem and was able to

provide many resources, 3ps and

recommenda3ons that are easy for clubs to

follow to ensure mee3ngs stay under control

and produce the desired results.

30 people from 18 clubs a@ended this fantas3c workshop, that included a short

presenta3on by Rob Houwen, Chairman of the Bendigo Bank board, that will offer

immediate help to clubs struggling to a@ract people to be on commi@ees, to produce

valuable results and generally make the mee3ngs worthwhile.

From ensuring well prepared agendas being sent out before any mee3ng, to restric3ng

mee3ng lengths and avoiding “waffle”, to ensuring effec3ve decisions are being made,

the workshop provided many opportuni3es for clubs to explore.

It has been proven that clubs with clearly

defined positons and procedures (and great

people to implement these of course!) are

more a@rac3ve to volunteers who want to

ensure their 3me is used most efficiently and

effec3vely to deliver outcomes that are

beneficial to club members. Keeping mee3ngs

to no longer than 90 mins and ensuring only

relevant topics are discussed are only a few

examples of good mee3ng procedures that

were presented.

If your club would like to get more informa3on on how best to run an effec3ve mee3ng,

the Clubs Online website has many great resources that can assist. Check it out at -

h@p://www.dsr.wa.gov.au/clubs/managing-your-club/mee3ngs or contact your Sport and

Recrea3on Club Development Officer.
