The World Wide Fund For NatureWhat does ‘conservation’ mean?
Do you know the names of any conservation groups in your country?
Li f e a n d c u l t u r e
The World Wide FundFor Nature began in 1961.
It is an international organisation,
and it has 2,000 different
conservation projects in different
parts of the world. Its symbol is
the famous giant panda.
The natural world is in great
danger, and its most dangerous
enemy is us – human beings. We
are destroying the Earth’s animals,
plants and rainforests. The WWF is
trying to protect them.
These are some of the problems.
• One in four animals (mammals, birds, reptiles and fish) are in danger.
• 13 % of our plants and flowersare disappearing fast.
• 26 hectares of rainforest disappear every minute . Only 50% of theworld’s rainforest now remains.
• 60,000 whales and dolphins dieevery year in fishing nets.
• 50% of the world’s coral reefs are indanger.
These are some of the WWF’s successes.
• In the 1960sthere were only100 rhinos* in
Nepal. Nowthere are 600.
• The number of gorillas inRwanda is rising.
• When the USgovernmentwanted to find oil inan important regionof Alaska, the WWFstopped them.
You can help too.For more information, go to the WWF website,
or contact us at:Panda House, Weyside Park, Godalming,
Surrey (UK).
