Sunday School - The approved safety plan for in person Sunday School starting September 13 has been emailed out. This email also includes a link to a survey, so you can let us know your thoughts on the plan. We will continue to offer an online zoom option for all of our classes as well. Until then, we will continue to meet over Zoom at 9:45 for Sunday School. You can find the link in your email.

Grades Move Up In September - September 13 is when we will move up grades, so current 9th graders will get to join high school at that point and current 5th graders can join junior high! Each week Elizabeth and Matt email out the Zoom invites for various youth activities. Here are our weekly options: • High School Sunday School – 9:45 AM on Sundays • Junior High Sunday school – 10 AM on Sundays • JAM (Junior High Bible Study) – 6:30 PM on Tuesdays Even if you can’t be at these meetings the whole time, please drop by! We know Zoom can be awkward and we also know you have busy schedules, and you may not be able to commit to the whole time. That’s totally ok! Even if it’s just to say hi, please join us! MESH in the Church Parking Lot - We will meet behind Messiah from 7 to 8:30 this Wednesday. Bring your lawn chair!

LABOR DAY SS LESSONS Today is the transition Sunday from summer to fall lessons. Earlier this week families received an email with Back to School or School at Home activities and lessons and password. Those are also posted on our private download page : https://www.messiahlutheran.com/ministries/children/ To protect the copyright of the creators, the lessons are password protected. Ask Amy if you didn’t receive it.

FOOTPRINTS OF FAITH recognition is today. Our families with new Kindergarten students completed a Family Faith Walk in their neighborhoods this week. Then they met this morning via zoom to talk about what they learned about Labor and Rest. Their books were porch delivered, and are being presented to the children either from home via livestream or face to face from the Sanctuary this morning during the late service.

FALL SUNDAY SCHOOL for children includes both an @home version and a face to face option starting September 13th. This parallels the return to school plans of many school districts in the area. Updated plans and policies have been emailed to all families. All Sunday School material used in face to face classes will be available for families doing SS@home through the private download page. Each family may choose which format better fits your personal situation. PARENT VOLUNTEERS needed to help with taking temperatures before SS class, and for cleaning tables and chairs after class. Volunteers are also needed to check in with the families doing lessons at home so our church family can stay better connected. Please sign up to serve at http://bit.ly/MLCFall2020SS

Throughout our lives, people continually take steps to learn new skills, explore new areas, and experience new adventures. The

same is true in our faith life. Discipleship isn’t ingrained at birth or completed by confirmation. Instead, just as infants grow into children, then adolescents, and then adults, our faith grows in stages through the steps we take and the prints we make. “Footprints of Faith” is a program series at Messiah Lutheran Church starting in the area of Children’s Ministry and reaching into the area of Youth Ministry. We take time during worship to recognize some of the milestones along the journey of faith growth. Our church traditionally celebrates the sacrament of baptism as the first step to becoming a member of God’s family. At infant baptism, parents and sponsors make promises on behalf of the child to support and encourage a life of faith through specific responsibilities. The first step a child takes alone is to join Sunday School. Around age 3 children begin to absorb the meaning of Bible stories and lessons beyond the basic routine of music, stories, and crafts. We recognize this step on the Sunday we celebrate the baptism of Jesus, as a reminder of promises made to bring children to God’s house. When it’s time for Kindergarten, we celebrate the independence and eagerness of children in exploring the world. Parents have the opportunity to share their faith “as you walk along the road” through Family Faith Walks, short devotions which tie into the daily lives of busy families. Each topic is tied to a seasonal activity in the community. The next step of independence is putting God’s Word into the hands of our children. As children learn to read, they take another step, learning through individual Bible study in addition to studying with others. In June, when school ends, we present Bibles to children completing first grade. In October, at Reformation, we celebrate what it means to be a Lutheran by presenting Luther’s Small Catechism to each of the children in third grade. In this book of questions and answers, children have a great resource to help them with their own questions. As faith develops and children grow up, they transition out of Children’s Ministry into Youth Ministry. This doesn’t mean they have no more footprints to make. In fact, the steps are more self-directed, and our youth begin to understand personal faith. As the 5th-7th graders head off to Confirmation camp, we celebrate that footprint the Sunday before they leave. At the end of 7th grade, our youth have completed confirmation instruction. We celebrate their declaration of faith with the confirmands, their families, and the congregation of Messiah as we welcome them into full membership of the church. All the footprints mentioned above are sheltered in the supportive environment of our church family. When our youth graduate from High School, they step into the community, and nurturing faith is solely their responsibility. We celebrate their transition into society, and wrap them in the peace and comfort of God’s love with the gift of a handmade prayer shawl or lap robe. Members of Messiah continue to pray that their footprints will continue on the path toward heaven.

If you have any questions, you can contact any of the PrimeTimer leaders – Glenn and Mary Cudly, Bill Harland, Ken and Rosann Hoekendorf, Randy and Joan Konkel, Jim and Linda Maciejewski, Brian Naber, Larry Redding, Dan and Cindy Rystrom, or Dennis Hiser
