ist!

Welcome to Messiah! Whether you’re a member, a returning guest, or maybe

this is your first time at Messiah, we welcome you to this time of worship. During

our time together, we hope that you experience the presence and love of God in

a profound and life-changing way! May the music we share stir you, may the

prayers we offer comfort you, and may the proclaimed Word of God challenge

you to live with a new passion and purpose. Again, we are honored that you

have chosen to worship here today. Let’s give God all glory and praise.

First-Time guests, we invite you to look through the “Welcome to Messiah”

brochure found in the attendance card slot on the pew in front of you. If you

have any questions, please talk to an usher.

Once we enter God’s House, we pray that our hearts are changed, and that His

perspective becomes ours; that we release the cares of this world, and bask in the

beauty of His holiness; that we give Him whatever burdens our heart, and find

the Spirit’s peace that passes all human understanding; that we learn more about

Jesus through His Word, and the joy that comes from a closer walk with the Lord.

If music is being played, we invite you to open the Bible in front of you, and focus

on His Word, or spend time in quiet prayer.

If a song is being sung, words are provided on the screens at the front of the

sanctuary. We invite you to sing along, or meditate on the song’s message.

O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You;

my flesh faints for You, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

So I have looked upon You in the sanctuary, beholding Your power and glory.

Because Your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise You.

So I will bless You as long as I live; in Your name I will lift up my hands. Psalm 63:1-4

Luther's Morning Prayer

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have

kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this

day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into

Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel

be with me, that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen.

THE PRESERVICE PRAISE “Not to Us”

THE GREETING

THE OPENING SONG “Mighty to Save”

THE INVOCATION

P: We celebrate in victory today in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad

in it.

We begin the long, green season of Sundays after Pentecost by acknowledging the apostolic ministry whereby the authoritative Word of God is delivered to the world. Fundamental to faith in the Word is the understanding of our sin and the love of God for all. Through the apostle Paul, we are given this understanding —sin is an inherited disease from which no one is exempt as descendants of Adam. Even greater, however, is to understand and believe that forgiveness of sin and eternal life come to all who hear and believe the Gospel call to repentance. By Baptism we receive forgiveness and the righteousness of Christ our Savior. God’s Word continues to be proclaimed to this day. Thank God for the ministry and His ministers who open to us the way of saving faith. P=Pastor C=Congregation In the Invocation, we "invoke" God’s presence by repeating the name in which we were baptized by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Second Sunday After Pentecost June 14, 2020 11:00am Worship

Everyone needs compassion, a love that’s never failing,

Let mercy fall on me.

Everyone needs forgiveness, the kindness of a Savior,

The hope of nations.

Chorus: Savior, He can move the mountains.

My God is mighty to save, He is mighty to save.

Forever, Author of salvation.

He rose and conquered the grave,

Jesus conquered the grave.

So take me as You find me, all my fears and failures, fill my life again. I give my life to follow, everything I believe in.

Now I surrender, yes, I surrender. Chorus

Shine Your light and let the whole world see.

We’re singing for the glory of the risen King, Jesus.

Shine Your light and let the whole world see.

We’re singing for the glory of the risen King. Chorus

You’re my Savior, You can move the mountains.

God You are mighty to save, You are mighty to save.

Forever, Author of salvation.

You rose and conquered the grave, yes You conquered the grave.

You are mighty to save.

THE CONFESSION AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF FORGIVENESS

P: Gathering as God’s chosen people, we bring with us the sins that wage war with our souls. We take this time to confess our sins to Him who has

delivered our souls from death, and we seek His forgiveness through His

Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

C: Lord Jesus, we are surely sinful from birth, and we struggle with

change, even as a people changed by You from death to life. Our

struggle is revealed as we fall into patterns of living, speaking, and

thinking that are not in line with being the people You have called

us to be. You have set us free through Your perfect life, death, and resurrection, yet we continue to live like people who are enslaved

to the enemy. Lord Jesus, forgive our sins and cleanse us from all

unrighteousness for Your name’s sake. Amen.

P: Almighty God, our refuge, our fortress, our God in whom we trust, hear

our prayers this day. As you have done for Your people throughout the

centuries, defend us from persecution, stand with us in our struggles, give

us strength to stand firm in the face of fear and uncertainty, and raise us

up with Your mighty right hand. Lead us by Your Spirit in these last days as we bring Your name to bear in all circumstances and as we live our

lives as Your chosen people. For You live and reign as one God—Father,

Son, and Holy Spirit—now and forever. Amen.

C: Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you. P: Almighty, eternal God, in the Word of Your apostles and prophets You

have proclaimed to us Your saving will. Grant us faith to believe Your

promises that we may receive eternal salvation; through Jesus Christ, our

Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now

and forever.

C: Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Exodus 19:2-8 2[The people of Israel] set out from Rephidim and came into the

wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the wilderness. There Israel

encamped before the mountain, 3while Moses went up to God. The Lord

called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the

house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: 4You yourselves have seen

what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and

brought you to myself. 5Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice

and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; 6and you shall be to me a kingdom of

In the Confession, we bare our souls before the Lord, admitting our sins and accepting responsibility for the harm they caused in our relationships with God and with each other. (1 John 1:8-9; Rom. 3:23) The pastor then speaks God's Word to give the forgiveness Jesus won for us on the cross. (John 20:23) In the Collect, The pastor and congregation greet each other as the angel greeted Mary at her annunciation. (Luke 1:28) The phrase also indicates the special relationship between the pastor and the congregation. We call this prayer a "Collect" because it collects the themes of the lessons and puts them into a prayer. The First Lesson is from the Old Testament, and is found on page 60 in the pew Bible.

priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the

people of Israel.” 7So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. 8All

the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we

will do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.

THE EPISTLE LESSON Romans 5:6-11 6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

7For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a

good person one would dare even to die— 8but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9Since, therefore, we

have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him

from the wrath of God. 10For if while we were enemies we were reconciled

to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled,

shall we be saved by his life. 11

More than that, we also rejoice in God

through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received

reconciliation.

THE GOSPEL SONG “Make Us One”

The Epistle Lesson is generally from St. Paul’s letters, and is found on page 942 in the pew Bible. We may read through an entire book over several weeks. The Gospel Song may change weekly or the ordinary verse is from John 6:68. We rise for the Holy Gospel as we would stand for Jesus Himself, since the Gospel is His living Word to us.

Page 6: Messiah Lutheran Church Welcomes You to the Lord's House · Shine Your light and let the whole world see. We’re singing for the glory of the risen King, Jesus. Shine Your light

THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 9:35-38

35Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing

every disease and every affliction. 36

When he saw the crowds, he had

compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep

without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful,

but the laborers are few; 38therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the

harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

P: This is the Gospel of our Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

WE CONFESS OUR FAITH-The Apostles' Creed

C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by

the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third

day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come

to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy

Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE SERMON HYMN “Lamb of God” LSB 550

The Holy Gospel is selected according to the season or festival Sunday of the Church Year, and is found on page 814 in the pew Bible. We respond to the Word of God with an acclamation of praise, and then by professing our faith. The Apostles Creed dates from about 75 AD and was used in the instruction of those to be baptized. We are confessing our personal faith. The Sermon Hymn coordinates with pastor’s sermon topic, and the Gospel Lesson.

Page 7: Messiah Lutheran Church Welcomes You to the Lord's House · Shine Your light and let the whole world see. We’re singing for the glory of the risen King, Jesus. Shine Your light

7

THE SERMON “Showing Compassion” Matthew 9:36

1. Jesus showed compassion to others.

2. Sometimes it is hard for us to show compassion.

3. We need to show compassion like Jesus to others.

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S TEACHING “We Are An Offering”

THE OFFERING PRAYER

THE OFFERING ANTHEM “Do They See Jesus in Me”

After the Offering Prayer, we ask all of those on the live stream to please fill out an attendance card. If you have any special prayer requests, you will find a space for this online as well. Thank you.

Is the face that I see in the mirror the one I want others to see?

Do I show, the way that I walk in my life,

The love that You’ve given to me?

My heart’s desire’s to be like You in all that I do, all I am.

Chorus: Do they see Jesus in me? Do they recognize Your face?

Do I communicate Your love and Your grace?

Do I reflect who You are in the way I choose to be?

Do they see Jesus, Jesus in me?

It’s amazing that You’d ever use me, but use me the way You will.

Help me to hold out a heart of compassion and grace,

A heart that Your Spirit fills.

We lift our voices, we lift our hands, we lift our lives up to You,

We are an offering.

Lord, use our voices, Lord, use our hands.

Lord, use our lives, they are Yours, we are an offering.

All that we have, all that we are, all that we hope to be,

We give to You, we give to You.

We lift our voices, we lift our hands, we lift our lives up to You,

We are an offering. We are an offering.

THE PRAYERS OF THE CONGREGATION

THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

P: O Lord of heaven and earth, who attends to Your people’s voice in prayer,

let Your Church have no fear or be troubled. As Christ is her defense, may

she always stand firm in the true faith of Jesus Christ. C: Gracious Lord, give Your divine strength to all who follow You, and

shield them from harm and danger.

P: We give You thanks for the love that made us and still sustains us. We

praise You for the gift of redemption through Jesus Christ, who gave

Himself into death for our sin, that we might have life in His name.

C: Help us to keep the treasure of Your love and grace in our hearts and

guide us to faithfully love and serve You all the days of our lives.

P: We pray for those with special concerns and needs this day. We remember those who are affected by the coronavirus, as patients, caregivers and

family members.

C: Lord, continue to strengthen them in mind, soul, body and spirit. May

they feel Your presence with them every moment.

P: Dear God, we know that You are not constrained by our troubles. Your

limits are never challenged. There is never a moment when there is nothing

more You can do. God, You work beyond the possibilities we can imagine.

C: Lord, give Your people Your peace that we may shine brightly in a dark world. Grant us the courage to live faithfully, even in the midst of

hard times. Let our fear of You be the beginning of wisdom rather

than allowing the fear of the world to drive our actions. Show Your

mercy and heal those who are suffering in Your fallen creation. Most

of all Lord, come. Restore the world You have made and make all

things new.

P: Lord, give us a sense of urgency to go forth in faith and action to do what

is needed to heal relationships and draw closer to You. C: Help us to realize where changes need to be made in our lives, in

order for us to more closely follow You and Your Word.

Prayer is one of the marks of the congregation gathered in worship, according to Acts 2:42. Here the congregation agrees together on earth that it may be done for them by the Father in heaven, as prayers, supplications, and thanksgivings are offered for all in authority and all sorts of human need. More prayer requests are found in the Announcement Guide. Please take them with you to use for your prayer time this week.

May I show forgiveness and mercy,

The same way You’ve shown it to me. Chorus

Well, I want to show all the world that You are

The reason I live and breathe,

So You’ll be the one that they see when they see me. Chorus

Do they see Jesus living in me?

Help me reflect who You are in the way I choose to be?

So they see Jesus, may they see Jesus, so they see Jesus, Jesus in me.

Page 9: Messiah Lutheran Church Welcomes You to the Lord's House · Shine Your light and let the whole world see. We’re singing for the glory of the risen King, Jesus. Shine Your light

9

P: O Lord of heaven and earth, who calls Your people to this feast of

abundance, nourish them with Your gracious love, and let their joy be full in the body and blood of Your Son. These and whatever other things

You would have us pray, we implore You for the sake of Him who is the

Resurrection and the Life, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C: Amen.

THE SANCTUS

THE LORD’S PRAYER

C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom

come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our

daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who

trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us

from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread,

and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples

and said: "Take eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in

remembrance of me." In the same way also He took the cup after supper,

and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: "Drink of it, all

of you; this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for

the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: And also with you.

“Sanctus” is the Latin word for holy, and is the name of an important hymn of Christian liturgy. It is sung at the heart of the eucharistic prayer, the prayer of consecration of the bread and wine. The text is taken from Isaiah 6:3, which describes the prophet’s vision of the throne of God surrounded by six-winged, ministering seraphim. This text is also influenced by Revelation 4:8. The concluding text, "blessed is He who comes.” The Lord's Prayer is the prayer Jesus taught to His disciples and to us in His Word. (Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4) The Words of Institution are a collection of all four Gospel accounts of the Last Supper, based on the oldest and fullest text found in 1 Corinthians 11.

THE AGNUS DEI

THE COMMUNION

If you are a guest today, please read page 15 before communing.

THE COMMUNION HYMNS “Come, Worship the Lord“

The Agnus Dei is a canticle that found its way into the liturgy as early as the 8th century. Following Jesus' baptism, John the Baptist acclaims Him as the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world." John 1:36 “Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of this bread and drink of that cup." Isaiah 55: 1-2, John 14:20, 23, and 1 Corinthians 11:28. A Prayer Before Communing: Dear Savior, at Your gracious invitation, I come to Your table to eat and drink Your holy body and blood. Let me find favor in Your eyes to receive this Holy Sacrament in faith for the salvation of my soul and to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

find rest.

“Let There Be Peace on Earth”

“Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O Lord.” Psalm 36:6 A Prayer After Communing: I thank and praise You, O God, for feeding me the life-giving body and blood of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Send Your Holy Spirit that, in receiving this Holy Sacrament, I may by faith obtain and eternally enjoy Your divine grace, the forgiveness of sins, unity with Christ, and life eternal; through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen.

Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.

Let there be peace on earth, The peace that was meant to be.

With God as our Father, brothers all are we.

Let me walk with my brother in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me,

Let this be the moment now.

With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow-

To take each moment, and live each moment

In peace eternally. Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

Lord, send Your peace to me, as uncertain days are near.

With You here by my side there’s nothing I need to fear.

With You, our True Leader, Ruler over all,

There’s no reason to worry, though earthly kings may fall.

Lord, let peace reign in us and keep our minds calm and still.

Send wisdom from above and help us to do Your will. Lord, make our nation a holy nation of love and unity.

Lord, fill the lives of all with faith, hope and charity.

“How Deep the Father’s Love for Us”

“His Eye is on the Sparrow”

“How Deep the Father’s Love for Us” is based on the following scripture: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal

life." John 3:16

How deep the Father's love for us, how vast beyond all measure;

That He should give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure.

How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turns His face away;

As wounds which mar the Chosen One bring many sons to glory.

Behold the Man upon a cross, my sin upon His shoulders;

Ashamed I hear my mocking voice, call out among the scoffers.

It was my sin that held Him there until it was accomplished.

His dying breath has brought me life—I know that it is finished.

I will not boast in anything, no gifts no pow’r no wisdom;

But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer.

But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom.

Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer.

But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom.

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,

Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heav’n and home,

When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He:

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain: I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,

For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

“Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear,

And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;

Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me. Refrain

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,

When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,

I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me. Refrain

Page 13: Messiah Lutheran Church Welcomes You to the Lord's House · Shine Your light and let the whole world see. We’re singing for the glory of the risen King, Jesus. Shine Your light

The Post-Communion Song, is based on Psalm 105. The first time this canticle appeared in the liturgy was in the 4th century. The personal encounter with Christ and His gifts in the Lord's Supper leads indeed to a joyful service to “tell everyone what He has done!" Let us shine His light. The Aaronic Benediction: the Lord recognizes us as His people, puts His name on us, and fulfills all promises in His name. (Num. 6:24-25; Matt. 18:19-20) “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 You are welcome to take this bulletin home and use it for personal devotions this week. Otherwise, we ask that you return it to the table as you leave. Thank you! We enter to pray and praise and we leave with a renewed commitment to serve and witness!

THE POST COMMUNION SONG

THE BENEDICTION

P: The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you.

The Lord look upon you with His favor and give you His peace.

C: Amen.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion

As You come to the Lord's Supper, you are affirming with each communicant that Jesus is your

Savior and Lord, that with Lutheran Christians, you believe His Body and Blood are present and

you desire to serve Him as a dynamic disciple in the fellowship of all believers. Our Holy

Communion practice is called "CLOSE" communion, not "CLOSED" communion. "Close"

communion invites all those who answer the following questions in the affirmative. We DO seek

to help each visitor and member, to prepare for the celebration of the Sacrament. If you have

not communed with us before, or if you cannot answer yes to the questions below, please speak

to our Pastor or an Elder before communing.

1. Have I been baptized in the name of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

2. Do I believe that I am a sinful human being without hope of eternal life except for God's

mercy in Christ?

3. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is God's Son and my personal Savior from sin, death, and

the power of the devil?

4. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is personally present in the Sacrament of Holy Communion

with His true Body and Blood?

5. Do I intend, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to live a Godly life?

At Messiah, Communion is distributed in a manner whereby the individual cup, followed by the

common cup, are offered at the same table. Communicants seated in the middle sections of the

Sanctuary proceed to the altar first, standing behind the usher. Then the communicants in the

side sections will proceed to the altar, also standing behind the usher. This will provide a

prayerful setting surrounding the significance of receiving Christ's body and blood.

A wine that has been chemically treated to remove all alcohol and sulfites is offered in clear

glasses in the individual trays. Gluten-free wafers are available at the usher tables in the back.
