Inge Verbruggen is an affable, gregarious artisan with an adventurous spirit and a tremendous amount of courage! We had the privilege of spending time with her at the PMC Conference in Kentucky this summer where we oohed and awed over the great pieces of art she was wearing.

Inge is a mixed media artist. She has a real passion for combining materials. She loves using color and textures and to combine different materials such as glass, resin, natural stones and pearls with metal clay. And as far as I can tell she is also a natural entrepreneur.

I have a habit of checking out the Featured Artist’s website before I speak with him or her. It gives me an opportunity to learn a little more about their work and become inspired by all of the beautiful creations. However, with Inge’s website, I had a bit of difficulty since it is written in a foreign language...hers. Inge is from Belgium and speaks Dutch. Fortunately, pictures speak

a thousand words. But then I discovered a wonderful tool in my web browser “Chrome” called translate. It told me that the website is written in Dutch and asked me if I would like it translated. Remarkable, within seconds, I was cruising through the pages of her site, admiring all the interesting activities she’s involved in and loving the photos of her work.

Rising Star

My metal clay journey started in 2011 when a friend I met at a bead society meeting told me about this “metal clay” medium she created with. Up until then I had been playing with wire for a few months as an attempt to grab some ‘me’

time. I’m sure a lot of you know how life gets all hectic and ‘me’ ends up coming last...or not at all!

Prior to that fortuitous meeting, life was the typical full time job, two young toddlers with a stay-at-home husband watching the kids, who also worked part-time as a lacrosse coach. I’ve worked at varying positions within Information Technology at a large aerospace company since I graduated college. Prior to that, throughout school I had always been involved in the arts, mainly through music and winterguard (think of a marching band colorguard indoors

without the band - using taped music).

So back to early 2011, I signed up for my first class and chose the tear-away technique using copper clay. I made a cute little pin with a picture of my kids that has been the inspiration of my Keepsake Photo Pendants.

I discovered metal clay resonates with my creative mojo because it engages my engineering brain in the constructive process, because of its tactile nature, and because it can be forgiving. Being able to roll it up in a ball and have another go if a piece isn’t working helps! Often I’ll be

staring off into space, working out a design or construction process in my head.

Leaves, tendrils and dewdrops are a common theme through my current work. The affinity for nature comes from growing up as a Girl Scout and spending my summers at Camp Amahami in New York. The leaf pieces are directly impressed from leaves I collect. I prefer to make the leaves from direct impressions in the clay rather than creating a mold because I feel it’s a more direct connection to the source. As the leaves are used over time they will

deteriorate and start to show little cracks and, for me, that enhances the naturalness of each piece.

I grab what time I can find to create in my basement studio. I run my art as a business because then I find it easier to make it a priority rather than make excuses and succumb to mommy-guilt. Not that I don’t experience mommy-guilt, but at the same time I understand that mommy-time is just as important to a balanced life.

I’ve been fortunate to take a few classes, namely with Gordon Uyehara, Holly Gage and Hadar Jacobson. I also decided I should learn some of the traditional metal-smithing techniques so I’ve been taking lessons with a local jeweler.


A big milestone in my short metal clay career was attending the 2012 PMC Conference.

I made so many friends and met a ton of new inspiring people!

At the start of each series of jewelry photography classes that I teach, I ask students:

“What’s the biggest challenge you face when shooting your work?”

By far, the most common answer is, “Getting the colors right.”

When I follow-up with “How many know what white balance is?”, very few know the answer.

There’s a correlation here. If you don’t know about white balance, you’ll probably have a tough time getting consistently true color... even with a good camera. So it seems to me that the topic of white balance is probably pretty good fodder for this column.

What is “White Balance?” It’s the mechanism that allows photographers to remove inaccurate colors, so that objects which appear white in person are portrayed as white in your photo.

Here’s the crux…different light sources have different color casts. Consciously or not, we all know this: - Sunlight appears blue - Incandescent light bulbs have a yellow/orange cast - Fluorescent lighting looks green

Here’s the easiest way to describe the problem: If you place a pure white sheet of paper in a room lit only by an incandescent bulb, the paper will take on a yellowish hue.

When many of us develop an interest in something, we read voraciously every book and article on the subject. We can pursue knowledge until we are overwhelmed with information – and fear taking the first step to activity. This is reflected in almost 90% of the comments I hear when it comes to learning to work with metal clay. Taking an introductory class with a skilled and experienced teacher is the preferable way to learn about metal clay. Buy what if there’s not an instructor in your area? Or the expense to travel to one is just too prohibitive? Or worse yet, there is so much information available you don’t know which advice is the best to follow? SHAKE OFF THE FEAR! Working with metal clay doesn’t have to be cost prohibitive and you can learn how on your own. You may envision a dimensional, intricate design that you just have to make. STOP! My advice is to start at the beginning and develop your skills with the clay, working up to that special piece. No one learns to bake a soufflé before they learn how to boil water. Give yourself some time to learn. Invest in clay and practice, practice, practice! Our first project is a basic “get to know the clay” design that anyone can do, but is essential for starting out. I suggest buying 20-25 grams of clay and making several of these. It is easier to work with a larger blob of clay than trying to make a small piece stretch. Your first attempt may not be your favorite, but you will improve with each piece you make.

Book Review

I am aware that this is a book that’s been out for over a year but I think it should be given another nod of approval, because a well-written book should not be shelved and forgotten!

Cindy Pankopf has skillfully and thoughtfully written a book for the beginner Metal Clay artist. She concentrates on silver clay but she does do the last project in copper.

She gives the reader an extreme in-depth introduction to everything silver clay. In the beginning under the title ‘Basics’ she has carefully labeled each Item necessary for claying with a letter, and a paragraph explaining its use, so there is no confusion. At the end of the Basics section, Cindy gives the reader an extremely complete shopping list to prep them for the projects in her book. Don’t be intimidated by it, but with a list like this I now realize why

my bench looks the way it does!

There are 20 projects in this book; each project is the perfect example of the basic skills considered necessary to be a launching pad for independent metal clay projects. Cindy takes the readers carefully from using texture stamps, through stone setting, and using a syringe, plus so much more. Each project is simple and can be effortlessly followed, yet each project lays substantial groundwork for the reader’s creative individuality.

I highly recommend this book to be in your arsenal of references. Yes, it is very basic, but I am painfully aware of times in an individual’s creative journey when you have not had time to get your hands into the clay. You feel as if you need to start all over with the nuts and bolts because you have forgotten all you have learned. This book is a fantastic reminder!

This book is the superlative textbook and if you know someone who does not have access to classes but wants to learn metal clay techniques, send it to them! I am fully convinced that they will be triumphantly creative with Cindy’s extraordinary book!

The Absolute Beginners GuideMaking Metal Clay Jewelry

Every now and then a tool comes along that begs to revolutionize your craft and I believe the Silhouette Digital Cutting tool (and those like it) is one of those.

This tool is not your ordinary digital cutter. Unlike other craft cutters, this tool has its own software suite for PC or Mac that enables users to fully customize their cuts. If you know what you would like to cut, you can either download a particular cut from the online library and customize it by ungrouping or adding and then welding the image to make a new cut, or just leave it alone and resize it. Then just send it to the cutter for cutting your Flex clay or PMC + sheet (I have yet to try it out on ArtClay Paper, but I don’t see why it would not cut that sheet). Some users can use other software to generate an image and then import it into the software (My Library) and then use the outline too within the software to make the image translate into a cut image.

Late in 2008, I purchased a Silhouette cutter at my local Scrapbooking store in hopes of being able to make templates and cut outs for use in my metal clay work. I thought I could just roll out my clay and use the template to cut custom shapes... or even cut card stock and roll that right into the clay and just let it burn out! But then, the light bulb went on and I thought maybe, just maybe, I could use it to cut the actual clay!

After much trial and error-it did just that! I put together a technical presentation for the 2010 International PMC Conference at Purdue University, based on all my work with the Silhouette up until then. (See “Technical Textures’” 2012 at www.pmcguild.com). It was fun watching attendees make the connection with it, and what possibilities this would give them for their work. Imagine being a metalsmith and being able to spend under $300 for a tool that could precisely cut a design out of sheet metal in under 5 minutes and not have to pick up a jeweler’s saw!

Those who crave invention and innovation when it comes to their work will benefit the most from such a tool. It take guts and desire to try something new but we have all heard of the phrase, “No guts, no glory” and it is this very phrase that helped me to keep going when I would want to stop because I knew how much each sheet was costing me if I messed it up. But the possible outcome outweighed the risks.

It is my hope that you will venture out of your comfort zone and give it a try. Why not get your group to purchase one and just share it…you will find a whole new world is waiting for you. On page 30 you will find a project to demonstrate most of the possibilities and capabilities of this unique and versatile tool.

Happy New Year!The New Year has started... I am wondering if 2013 is a lucky year!

The number 13 is important in my family. Two of my immediate family members were born on the 13th and one was married on the 13th. So I am completely expecting something extraordinary to happen this year. However, I am far

from superstitious, I am just optimistic! My prayer is that all our readers have something to be hopeful for this year as well!

The professional work that Barbara produces, shows her attention to detail is exceptional! I highly suggest that you peruse her entire gallery prior to reading her blog. I believe in looking at a person’s body of work first before you read about them because their work is more personal than their words. Each individual creates from what they have experienced in their lives and everything affects the pieces’ appearance.

Now back to her blog… Barbara shares her life with her readers and you get to know the creator behind her fantastic work. But as I preach to you every time, always read past postings!!! Flat Stella will give you a giggle and I think her posting about getting a flu shot was a crackup!

As I said before, her blog gives you a unique insight to this artist’s personal life; plus she occasionally shares on what she is working. October 30th 2012, Barbara posted an interesting challenge in which she participated. I utterly fell in love with the first piece she created for it! I am not going to describe it because I want you to take the time to see it yourselves.

Kristi is a very talented and busy woman! I‘ve spent a considerable amount of time roaming through her blog. As I was reading through it there were suggestions of other postings I may like under each date, so I just started clicking away! I found a wonderful thread of her work with copper metal clay and I was treated to a superb step by step of her firing process on her April 3rd, 2011 posting. I discovered this just by clicking on a suggestion under her Jan. 2012 posting, which I click on from under one of her recent Jan. 13th, 2013 postings. It is just that straightforward to explore!

I kept on clicking and was also treated to some of Kristi’s fantastic macro photography! Who’d have figured a yard waste container could be so fascinating? Kristi is also involved in a couple of different challenges this year and I plan on visiting her blog often to see what she is up to. I suggest you all do to same!

An added bonus is her January 17th, 2013 posting. She has made an easy to read chart for the recent US postage changes. I am going to print this out for future reference. If you look back into her earlier postings around early June of 2012, Laura explains how to fire base metals. She shows a comprehensive testing of how to fire copper and bronze, unfortunately several attempts flopped. However, there is never failing in metal clay firing because each mistake becomes a learning moment and Laura capitalizes on this.

”Birds in all their freedom, gracefully gliding through the sky or proudly strutting on the ground. To capture those motions is my challenge.”

As a ceramist I fell in love with porcelain. I prefer the craftsmanship of the throwing wheel and the precision of the sgraffito technique. Thrown porcelain pots are covered with a black engobe in which geometrical shapes or birds are scratched. After graduating in silver clay in the United States in 2003, some of the birds on my pots receive a silver wing. The combining of these two forms of “clay” is a technical challenge that’s more than worth the effort. The result is a graceful combination of matte black, bright white porcelain and lustrously shining silver. Currently my birds are becoming more and more figurative. The hand-formed porcelain bodies and heads are getting tails, necks and legs

made of bronze clay or copper clay. The rich yellow hue of the bronze or the warm red of copper lend themselves perfectly to complete my proud porcelain birds.

We are so very grateful to you all for your insight, professionalism and generous time devoted to make this challenge a success.

I have always had a love of precious, sparkly objects, and have pursued the creation of art in many mediums since I was a child. In 2002 I began to research the ground-breaking silver product developed in Japan, Precious Metal Clay. It would allow me to create detailed art pieces in fine silver and gold that might be impossible, or time prohibitive using traditional techniques. The possibilities seemed endless, and I was hooked. I especially enjoy pushing the limits of this innovative material and exploring and refining techniques to incorporate text and line drawings into my designs, creating truly personal works of art to wear or to behold. Each piece is handmade, so no two are exactly alike. My creations are mostly about recapturing the feeling of wonder I experienced as

a small child while viewing that marvel of miniature engineering, the Queen’s Doll House at Windsor Castle. I like to think that I have instilled a love and appreciation of precious things in my children. A number of years ago, my daughter grumbled that she wanted to go shopping but had no money. My then 14 year old son pulled out his wallet, handed her $5 and said: “Here. Pick me up a pop. Keep the change and buy yourself something shiny.”
