IntroductionMigrating to a new version of SharePoint is like moving to a new home.
Before you make that move, there are critical issues to consider. Will the furniture, appliances, and
decorative pieces from your previous home fit and work in your new home? What about the custom
furniture in your current home that you may not be able to move? For example, it is difficult to move built-
in closets that you had a contractor build for you. On a similar note, when was the last time you looked
through all your drawers and found just how much useless junk you’ve got hiding in there?
Similarly, a SharePoint migration requires careful planning to identify the critical issues and mitigate the
risks of the migration. Whether you’re moving your environment to SharePoint 2013, SharePoint 2016, or
SharePoint Online (SPO), it is essential to understand the limits of your new environment, and whether all
your content meets these limits. It is also important to consider whether content that is outdated, no
longer in use, or forgotten, is worth moving.
It is also important to understand that SharePoint customizations such as custom web parts, custom
features and solutions, and custom Master Pages and Page Layouts, do not work in newer versions of
SharePoint. Some custom work will be required to move those customizations, especially when the
destination is an SPO server, which supports SharePoint Apps and sandboxed solutions.
Which is why an analysis of your current environment and careful migration planning can save you time and
money, and aid in the optimization of your new SharePoint environment.

Metalogix Expert Installable ComponentsMetalogix Expert is a combination of the Metalogix Expert Console and a SharePoint WSP called Metalogix
Extensions Web Services.
Metalogix Expert Console
The Metalogix Expert console is the primary User Interface (UI) application for analyzing the status
of your current SharePoint environment and file system. It provides you with a report overview,
based on Microsoft best practices for various components in your SharePoint environment and file
system.
Metalogix Extensions Web Services
The Metalogix Extensions Web Services (MEWS) is a web service wrapper around the SharePoint
Server Object Model. Metalogix Expert uses MEWS to read farm-level information to analyze
SharePoint migrations from that farm. The Metalogix Expert Console uses MEWS to communicate
with your SharePoint Server. The MEWS installation is not required for a SharePoint on-premise
environment if your analysis is limited to the Site Collection level only.

Installation ScenariosThere are various installation scenarios for Metalogix Expert. Your specific scenario will determine whether
you need to install the Metalogix SharePoint Extensions Web Service (MEWS). Metalogix Expert can run
Farm, Web Application or Site analysis reports when installing locally on an existing SharePoint
environment.
See the following scenarios for more details:
1. MEWS installation is not required for SharePoint on-premise. It is recommended if you are attempting
to access site collection and sub-site for analysis only.
a. Metalogix Expert is installed outside the server and connects to a site collection or sub-site only.
b. Metalogix Expert is installed directly on a server and connects to a site collection or sub-site only.
2. MEWS installation is required if you are attempting to access web application analysis.
a. Metalogix Expert is installed outside the server and connects to a web application. MEWS needs to
be installed on the SharePoint server in this scenario.
b. Metalogix Expert is installed directly on a server; MEWS must be installed on the same server as well.
3. MEWS installation is required if you are attempting to access farm analysis.
a. Metalogix Expert is installed outside the server and connects to a farm. MEWS needs to be installed
on the SharePoint server in this scenario.
b. Metalogix Expert is installed directly on a server, MEWS must be installed on the same server as
well.
4. No installation dependencies to run the File Share Analysis in Migration Expert.
a. Users can analyze their local and remote File System to gain a better understanding of source
content.
b. The File Share Analysis does not require any installation dependency.

Access to Site Collection and Sub-Site AnalysisFor access to site collection and sub-site analysis you can install either of these two scenarios:
1. Install Metalogix Expert outside the server and connect to your site collection or subsite, you do not
need to install MEWS for site collection or sub-site analysis on SharePoint on-premise environments.
2. Install Metalogix Expert on your server and connect to your site collection. You do not need to install
MEWS for site collection analysis on SharePoint on-premise environments.

Access to Web Application AnalysisFor access to web application analysis you can implement either of these two scenarios:
1. Install Metalogix Expert outside the server and connect to your web application. You must install MEWS
on a SharePoint server for web application analysis.
2. Install Metalogix Expert on the server and connect to your web application. You must install MEWS on
the same server for web application analysis.
