Read the following statement:Your family goes hiking up Bear Mountain. On
your way up the mountain you stop and pick up 3 rocks. You tell your family that they are all metamorphic rocks based on the layers and stripping that they show. Thumbs up you agree Thumbs down you disagree
When any type of rock (sedimentary, metamorphic, igneous) undergoes
METAMORPHISM (subjected to heat and pressure) forms a metamorphic rock.
METAMORPHIC ROCK
Contact(heat)
Magma/lava will hit into the rock, causing it to change into a metamorphic rock
Regional(pressure)
Layers of rock on top cause pressure to build up metamorphism
TWO TYPES OF METAMORPHISMCONTACT AND REGIONAL
Foliation & Banding wavy bands of dark and light minerals
Ex – Gneiss Mineral Alignment – interlocking crystals
