The saffronised Indian rite “squatting-on-the-floor Mass”

The “squatting Mass” is the only “Mass” of the heretical Catholic Ashrams movement and has a number of aberrations apart from those “approved” (read as “fraudulently obtained from”) by

the Vatican.It has spawned some variations such as the “shawl” Mass in which priests do not squat but are

not vested.

Is it any surprise then that the celebrant -- in this case the local Bishop himself – has to squat yogi-like on the floor according to the news story below!

With the promulgation of the Conciliar Document “The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy”, liturgical adaptation was considered urgent because it seriously touches the identity of the Church both in terms of her mystery as well as in terms of the world in which it lives and works. (Sacramentum Concilium #7) The first General Body Meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India in Delhi, in October 1966, provided broad guidelines for inculturation.“All liturgical adaptations must be based on the norms of the Constitution of Sacred Liturgy (SC #37-40)”.The same meeting appointed late Fr. D. S. Amalorpavadass (1932-1990) as the founder-director of National Biblical, Catechetical and Liturgical Centre, Bangalore, of which he took charge in February 1967. In the following decade he, together with many dynamic collaborators, played a very crucial role in liturgical inculturation in India.The second All India Liturgical Meeting, Bangalore, on January 27-31, 1969, prepared a long-term plan for liturgical inculturation consisting of four phases.

1. Creating an Indian atmosphere through music, postures, decorations, objects, and other elements of worship2. Translation of liturgical rites into vernaculars and original composition of new texts3. Use of scriptures of other religions4. Compose a new Indian anaphoraThe first step towards inculturation was the introduction of twelve external elements for creating an Indian atmosphere of worship. With the recommendation of the Indian Bishops, fifty one Bishops out of seventy one in March 1969, the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship gave the approval on April 25, 1969, with the provision that it was left to the discretion of the Regional Council of Bishops and the local ordinaries to implement them. (30% of the Bishops did not approve it.)The twelve items are squatting posture instead of standing; anjali hasta and panchanga pranam as forms of reverence; arati as form of welcome to the main celebrant; use of a shawl instead of the traditional liturgical vestments; tray to keep the offering; oil lamps instead of candles; a simple incense bowl; touching objects to one’s forehead instead of kissing them; anjali hasta to share peace; spontaneous prayer of the faithful and maha arati at the doxology.[…]The preparation for an Indian Anaphora was initiated in 1968. Amalorpavadass, the younger brother of Cardinal Lourduswamy of the Vatican Congregation for Promotion of Inter-Religious Dialogue. He built a centre for Inculturation known as NBCLC (National Biblical Catechetical and Liturgical Centre) at Bangalore, modeled in the form of a temple with symbols of all religions engraved on the door of the temple. It is here that lay people even today are taken, even sponsored by dioceses and parishes, to be "brainwashed" into paganisation by drinking the poison of the "Indian Rite Mass" fabricated by Fr. Amalorpavadass… who himself died a most cruel death being crushed under a truck that left him "faceless" in his death… Fr. Amalorpavadass is the first to construct the 'Indian Rite' incorporating in it all the Brahminical rituals of Hinduism with the chanting of Vedic and Upanishadic mantras. It includes readings taken from the Hindu scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita. The words of consecration keep evolving and changing as per the "creativity" of the celebrant. The mass is said squatting on the ground, on a little table surrounded by small lamps.

The priestly vestments were completely cast away, the celebrant being in his civil clothes wears a saffron shawl with the character OM in its centre. All the mantras and prayers in this abominable mass begin with 'OM'. 'Tilak' is applied on the foreheads of priests and people. Arati (an act of worship performed by moving in a circular fashion a plate with incense-sticks) is done with a bronze pot, leaves and coconut (it symbolises the 3 deities Shiva, Ganesh and Parvati — the fertility cult of the Hindus). The reason given is that it is a sign of welcome. The Mantras invoking Vishnu and Shiva are attributed, of course falsely to Our Lord Jesus Christ. The 'Indian Rite' yet stands unapproved by Rome and yet is widely practiced in all seminaries, convents and gradually in many parishes… Seminarians are sent to Hindu Christian Ashrams where they live-in, imbibing in themselves the elements of Indian worship and meditations…"

The “Indian Rite of Mass” was in full swing at St. Ann’s Church in Toronto on Sunday, July 2, 2006, and he felt he was being hypnotized by the endless monotonous chants and the flowing hand movements of the Indian dancing girls. Feeling nauseated, he left the front of the church and walked to the back to clear his mind. Along the way he noticed people frozen in the pews as though in a trance.George and some friends had learnt of this event at St. Ann’s through flyers that announced a “Roman Rite Liturgy of the Eucharist with religious cultural adaptations of India, approved by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India”. The Presider would be a certain Father Thomas D’Sa, Director of the National Biblical Catechetical Liturgical Centre (NBCLC) of the Indian Bishops’ Conference in Bangalore, India. The flyer pictured a “Jesus” dressed like a Hinduized Catholic priest, squatting in front of a large plate on which rested a huge “host” the size of an Indian unleavened bread called chappati…

It should be noted that the event was advertised on the Archdiocese of Toronto website although there is no “Indian Rite” or “Ordo” that has official Vatican approval.

Another extract from the book “The Paganized Catholic Church in India” by Victor J.F. Kulanday:The God With Us series which is the catechism book authored, edited and published by the National Biblical Catechetical Liturgical Centre in Bangalore under the inspiration and direction of Fr. D.S. Amalorpavadas, brother of Archbishop Lourduswamy.

"The above picture is from Book II, page 23 to illustrate the lesson: God's Family comes together-for a meal (lesson 9). This lesson is on the Holy Eucharist referred to as a meal in this catechism book. The mystery of the Holy Eucharist is hardly conveyed to the children either by the text of the lesson or by this illustration of

a family at meal. The illicit Indian Mass is also offered by the celebrant with the congregation squatting on the floor."

2. Letter from George Moraes From: Professor George M. Moraes, President, All India Laity Congress, Jasville, 9 New Marine Lines, Bombay-400 020, Telephone 297048 To: Rev. Fr. Cassian Parichha, Nitya Jivan Niketan, Phulbani (Orissa) 762 001.Date: 7th Oct. 1979[…] Squatting Mass[T]he "squatting mass" would be an abomination of abominations if it means that the congregation remains sitting throughout the Mass. It is common etiquette, when a person who is superior to us comes, to signalize our respect for him by standing. It follows therefore that when the Creator of heaven and earth comes to us at Consecration He should be honoured with kneeling and adoration, and we should continue kneeling till Holy Communion during the rest of the Mass. Again, the proper place to celebrate the Mass is the altar and not a footstool or a suitcase, as is reported to have been done by some Jesuits, and never the floor, as would be the case in a "squatting mass". A seat on the floor is for the lowest of the low and the highest of the mountains, Meru, in Hindu society and mythology. This was how Kalidas, poet laureate who had been deputed as his ambassador to the Kadamba court at Banavasi (now in North Kanara, Karnatak) by the Gupta Emperor of the times consoled himself when he was not given a place befitting his rank but was made to take his seat on the ground, comparing himself to Meru which stands on bare earth. It is also an ancient practice to stand at the Gospel. This was restored by Theophilos the monk (A. D 354) when he noticed that among other abuses it was the custom among the Indian communities to sit at the reading of the Gospel. The powers that be in the Church should not reintroduce such abuses. The question also arises: who gave the permission for the 'squatting mass'? It is ultra vires if it is celebrated only "with the blessings" of the Archbishop. Permission had to come from Rome.

3. Important ClarificationThe following is taken from the Diocesan News Letter [DNL], Madurai, of October 1978, No. 195. Readers will be happy that His Grace the Archbishop Most Rev. Justin Diraviam is so concerned about matters of faith and morals. Let us in a special way thank God and pray for His Grace.

The Archbishop Secretary of the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship, by the letter dated 23-5-75 (Prot. N. 649/75), in reply to questions submitted by His Grace, Most Rev. Justin Diraviam, Archbishop of Madurai, clarified also certain points regarding liturgical experimentations and the so-called "Indian Masses" (See DNL, June 1975 for the clarification on bination for concelebration). Following are the Questions and the Replies which, as anyone can see, are of no little practical interest:Q. "Do the norms laid down in n. 1 2 of the 'Instructio Tertia' apply to all experimentations in the Liturgy everywhere? As far as India is concerned, does the Commission of the CBCI for Liturgy or the National Liturgical Centre [NBCLC] have any general authorisation to establish experimentation centres and carry out experimentation whatever they find useful to make the liturgy 'more relevant and creative'? Or can the Catholic Bishops Conference of India, in accordance with n. 45 of the Instruction 'Inter Oecumenici' entrust to its Commission for Liturgy 'studies and experiments to be promoted', without taking into account the provisions on n.12 of the 'Instruction Tertia?"R. "With regard to experimental centres the conditions and limits under which such centres should operate are set out in Notitiae 5 365-374".

The pages of the Notitiae 1969, referred to in this Reply, contain the decree of the Consilium permitting the Bishops of India to allow, at their discretion, the 12 Points of adaptation of Indianisation' (pp. 365-366) and a "Commentary prepared by the National Liturgical Centre" on each of these points (pp. 366-374). The Reply thus makes it clear that no experimentation on the rites of the Mass other than those mentioned in the 12 points (which are concerned only with the Mass) has so far been approved by the Holy See. Even with regard to the 12 points, it must be noted that the Holy See understood them and approved their conditional adoption in the sense in which they were explained in the said commentary of the National Liturgical Centre. According to this commentary, squatting during the Anaphora is excluded, and is recommended only for the Liturgy of the Word. (Notitiae d. 1969, p.137) And the reason given: "While the padmasana or squatting seems to be the best posture for private prayer, meditation and listening to the word of God, standing seems to be more appropriate for the Anaphora in the context of both Christian and Indian tradition". (ibid. p. 370)From the Reply is also clear that, apart from the 12 points of Indianisation (where they have been allowed by the respective Bishops), all experimentations in the Liturgy in India, as well as anywhere else, are subject to the norms given in n. 12 of the 'Instructio Tertia', which says among other things: "When liturgical experimentation is seen to be necessary or useful, permission will be granted in writing

by this Sacred Congregation alone, with clearly defined norms and under the responsibility of the competent local authority ... The liturgical ,changes requested (for experimentation) may not be put into effect while the reply of the Holy See is being awaited. If changes are to be made in the structure of the rites or in the order of parts as given in liturgical books, or if actions differing from traditional ones or new rites are to be introduced, a complete outline and programme of modifications should be proposed to the Holy See before any experiments are begun. Such a procedure is required and demanded both the Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium' (on the Liturgy) and by the seriousness of the matter".

He extolled Hinduism and visited Hindu temples. These antics failed to impress the good Syrian Christians. He even performed the squatting Mass scandalising his flock.*He died at a yoga centre founded by him- Michael

This is the Mass which Archbishop Lourduswamy performed in Rome to impress Vatican VIPs that by squatting on the floor and chanting in Sanskrit the Mass is Indianised. […][I]n finding an excuse for the celebrant to squat on a platform, the commentary says this is the "universal practice in the country". Again a false statement. Neither for social nor for religious ceremonies does ANYONE sit on a platform. The Hindu pujari (priest) never uses platform to squat. This is NOT "the universal practice in the country" as claimed by the Hinduisers but abnormal one introduced by the paganisers to make squatting more convenient and less painful.

Chapter VIINCULTURATION OR PAGANISATION ?The accusation that the Church has a western image is also totally false. Church has an image of an international religion. Today the whole of India is being Westernised. If you wish to use that term everywhere there is progress and everything is being modernised. Even the villages have now a new look with radio, T.V. electricity transport and many other modern amenities. This does not mean Indians have lost their cultural values and are being Westernised. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is doing his best to take the nation to the 21st century on the wings of the World's best scientific and technological ideas.Amalorpavadas and the bishops of India are dragging the Church back to primitivism - squatting on the floor to offer Mass and throwing the sacred species on the ground Amalorpavadas forgets that he himself is 100 percent Westernised starting the day with brushing his teeth - a very Western habit while his grandfather did not use a tooth-brush but only his index finger. He knows the entire hierarchy lives in posh Westernised style of life with every modern comfort that money can buy. Many bishops use imported foreign cars causing envy among politicians and others. It is this external splendour and high living of many bishops and priests that gives the Westernised look to the Church.Squatting on the floor to offer the Holy Eucharist and then at table for breakfast with spoon and fork is one of the many hypocritical acts of the Hinduisers. The Brahmins are very sensible. They continue their pujas as they did centuries ago but in life they adjust to the march of civilization. Ten years ago when we met one of the Shankaracharyas he was seated on the floor and we too sat a respectable distance from him on the floor. Later a couple of years ago one found him seated on a comfortable sofa offering me a chair near him.

Here is Bede Griffiths, the British Benedictine turned Hindu-Catholic sannyasin (hermit). Wearing a shawl over his shoulders and squatting on the floor he is offering Mass the illicit Indian way chanting

mantras and Hindu religious exclamations. A part of this cocktail ceremony - Hindu-pantheistic and Catholic -is FIRE WORSHIP. You can see him holding the flame reciting mantras in the process of worshipping it. Until now this illicit mass with all its paganism has not been stopped by the Bishops Conference of India. The evil

is fast spread in to many parts of the country.

CHAPTER VIIIPETITTON TO THE HOLY FATHER[…]The Squatting MassHoly Father, a direct result of the Prot. N 802/69 dated April 25, 1969 is the Indian Rite Mass which today is being performed by Bishops and priests and which is being propagated with much gusto and propaganda

1. The Squatting Mass, as the Faithful call it, with Hindu rituals, rites, symbols and mantras (magic words) begins with invocations to the Hindu "God" Krishna by the priest chanting OM several times. In the Bhagavad Gita, one of the holiest of Hindu scriptures "God" Krishna very clearly states: "I am in the air, in the water, in every created thing, Bow low and worship me. I am the OM".

How can the sacrifice of Calvary be offered to the Almighty when Krishna is invoked to start the Holy Mass?

The contention of the propagandists of the Indian squatting mass is that Prot. N. 802/69 of April 25, 1969, has permitted the use of the 12 Points and the Indian Mass has only implemented them. This isNOT true because the 12 points do not contain any mention of OM at all nor does it give the permission for the use of Sanskrit in Catholic Liturgy.

2. No decree of the Holy See has given the church in India the permission to use the Sanskrit language.

Sanskrit is the language of the Hindu religion even as Latin is of the Church. Sanskrit is ONLY used for Hindu pujas (sacrifices) and in Hindu rituals. Only the Brahmin priests use Sanskrit and the Hindu worshippers do not know this language at all. Vatican II with the wisdom of the church permitted the use of local languages thereby making it possible in India to offer Holy Mass in any of the Indian languages. The Hindus too are today revolting against the use of Sanskrit in their temples and especially in the south local languages are now being used. When the trend is to use the local language, the action of those who use the Indian rite mass to invoke God in Sanskrit is ONLY to give the mass the semblance of a Hindu puja (sacrifice):

Hence, Holy Father we appeal to you to please BAN the use of Sanskrit and OM in all the liturgy prayers and meditation etc. in the Church. Already OM has been researched by the Sacred Congregation for oriental churches and the Hierarchs of the Syro Malabar Church have been informed by His Eminence Cardinal Rubin (Rome 12-B-1980) that, "Notwithstanding the attempt made in various quarters to offer an accommodated Christian interpretation, it (OM) remains so strongly qualified in a Hindu sense, is charged with meaning so unmistakably Hindu, that it simply cannot be used in Christian worship ... OM is an essential, integral part of Hindu worship."

There can be No place at all for Sanskrit in the Church. When even Jubilate Deo is totally ignored and Latin not taught in the seminaries, we have no right to extol Sanskrit which even in Hindu society only the temple pujaris (priests) know and use. If a sacred language has to be used, it must be Latin or Syriac. [Emphasis theirs]

Holy Father, squatting on the floor throughout the Holy Mass including the sacred moments of Divine consecration, is not only in vogue but is fast spreading throughout India. Many bishops and priests are performing the squatting mass.

His Grace Most Rev. Justin Diraviam, Archbishop of Madurai wrote to the Sacred Congregation of Divine worship and received reply dated 25-5-75 (Prot. No. 649/75) clarifying points regarding liturgical experimentation. The reply of the Sacred Congregation made it very clear that no experimentation other than those mentioned in the 12 Points have been approved by the Holy See. According to the commentary given by the Bishops National Liturgical Center NBCLC) squatting during the Anaphora is excluded and is recommended only for the liturgy the Word (Notitiae 1969 page 371).[…]Again, we emphasise that the innovators who are Hinduising the liturgy have done it without a study in depth either of Hinduism or the plethora of cultural nuances of the Indian scene. In a country where western science and civilisation have made effective inroads and where everyone accepts the fruits of modern technology, no, one thinks in terms of western or Indian. It is sheer hypocrisy to say that the Church in India has a western look and hence it should be Indianised (Hinduised). It is paradoxical to see the liturgy Hinduised by priests who after offering the squatting mass live a full-fledged western style of life with all modern comforts.

And this is how the Eucharistic table is maintained by some Jesuit priests:

Fr. Lobo, when contacted by me, informed me that “the faithful are placing their offerings at the altar”.

As per the GIRM, one would expect offerings to be placed at the foot of the altar or elsewhere but not on the altar as the picture seems to show, which would be a violation of the rubrics: GENERAL INSTRUCTION OF THE ROMAN MISSALhttp://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/ccdds/documents/rc_con_ccdds_doc_20030317_ordinamento-messale_en.html #73. It is well also that money or other gifts for the poor or for the Church, brought by the faithful or collected in the church, should be received. These are to be put in a suitable place but away from the Eucharistic table.

Fr. Bryan Lobo SJ, Director of the Department of Theology of Religions, part of the faculty of Missiology at the Gregorian University Rome, is one of those priests who wears the shawl over civilian clothes but prefers to use a chair to sit on while celebrating Mass instead of floor-squatting.

While viewing the photographs, note that priests who are vested properly (with the chasuble, etc.) find it impossible to squat on the floor so they use a cushioned pillow or a low stool or even a chair. But the priests who attire themselves in civilian clothes for Mass (Fr. Joe Pereira and Jesuit Fr. Paul Vaz for instance) or wear a saffron shawl draped over the cassock have no problem with squatting on the floor.

It is only Hindu and Jain pujaris who squat on the floor to perform their pujas and homams.South Indian Brahmin men, Jains and others drape shawls or small sheets of cloth, mostly white-coloured, over their shoulders when they visit the temple to offer puja. But they are always bare-bodied except for the shawl when performing pooja/worshipping in the temple. But our inculturationist priests wear saffron shawls, the colour of the Hindu religion OVER their clothes. The Shankaracharyas of the Indian mutts only wear saffron-coloured clothes (to the complete exclusion of other colours). So do Hindu gurus and godmen.

As I see it, the "Indian-rite Mass" is often nothing but the Latin-rite Mass celebrated squatting and flouting important liturgical rules and without the required spirit and signs of reverence.I am only presenting here what I had observed earlier and observe even now.I was once for a few days in a group of priests, brothers and sisters. Every morning we had the Eucharistic celebration. The main celebrant would sit on a seat behind the Eucharistic table. All others - priests, brothers, sisters - would sit in front and along the sides. Free seating was the rule. I suppose all the priests were concelebrating. But no one had any liturgical vestments - not even the stole. The main celebrant had just a shawl. No one could make out who was a celebrant and who a participant. At communion the ciborium-cum-chalice was passed around for self-communion.In the light of what is said in nn. 94, 104, 126, etc. of Redemptionis Sacramentum, such celebrations of the Mass are not only devoid of all reverence and dignity, but are gravely unworthy. It is better not to celebrate at all than celebrate in an unworthy way. As Francis Bacon says in his essay on Superstition, atheism which denies the existence of God is better than superstition which worships God in ways that are unworthy. Atheism ignores God, superstition dishonours Him.Even after all the insistence of the Magisterium, after all the publicity given to the Documents mentioned above*, in India there are still communities where in the name of the "Indian-rite Mass" many abuses and aberrations continue rendering the celebration in an unworthy and irreverent act. In some communities it

happens that at communion time an aspirant or a seminarian or a sister comes up and asks for the ciborium-cum-chalice to pass it around for communion.All the faithful, or at least the priests and religious are supposed to read and follow the directives of the Church. If by some chance they have not read them and so are in ignorance, then it is our duty to tell them what they have to do.I think we celebrants cannot let them continue in their ignorance. That is not the mind of the Church - letting people continue in their ignorance and in error.To help us celebrate the Eucharist reverently, worthily, and thus fruitfully, we shall do well to pay attention to n. 173 of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments’ Redemptionis Sacramentum:"Although the gravity of a matter is to be judged in accordance with the common teaching of the Church and the norms established by her, objectively to be considered among grave matters is anything that puts at risk the validity and dignity of the Most Holy Eucharist, namely, anything that contravenes what is set out above in nn. 48-52, 56, 76-77, 79, 91-92, 94, 96, 101-102, 104, 106, 109, 111, 115, 117, 126, 131-133, 138, 153 and 168.
