43.40.Vn METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR REDUCING VIBRATION OF CAR BODY
Yuuji Maeda et al., assignors to Hitachi, Ltd. and Nissan Motor Com- pany
5 May 1992 (Class 123/192.1); filed in Japan 27 January 1990
This patent pertains to a means for reducing vibrations of an automo- bile that are caused by engine roughness due to irregular combustion. Changes in the engine's rotational speed are sensed and used via a controller to generate a roll-vibration canceling force on the engine block, e.g., by controlling the torque of an alternator attached to the engine.--EEU

43.40.Yq FIBER-OPTIC ACCELEROMETER
Robert M. Taylor, assignor to Smiths Industries Public Limited Com- pany
4 August 1992 (Class 73/517 R); filed in the United Kingdom 21 Sep- tember 1989
This accelerometer, which is intended to be insensitive to temperature changes, in essence measures the axial deflection of an elastic cylinder duc to axial acceleration. The cylinder is supported at its midlength and has masses mounted on its ends. Two birefringent optical fibers with elliptical cores arc wound around the cylinder in opposite senses on opposite sides of the central support. Light is supplied to one end of both fibers and is sup- plied to photodiodes via polarizers at the other end. Axial acceleration causes extension in one fiber and compression in the other, resulting in equal and opposite changes in birefringence. A processor subtracts the changes in the outputs of the diodes to provide an acceleration signal.--EEU

43.40.Yq PENDULUM-TYPE ACCELEROMETER
E. Paul Shannon, Ki!len, AL 4 August 1992 (Class 73/517 R}; filed 27 September 1990
The intent of this patent is to provide a sensor for angular motion or banking, for indicating the grade, and for accclcration-dccclcration for trucks, cranes, trains, and ships. The sensor consists of a cylinder with four coils mounted in its base at 90 ø intervals and with a pendulum suspended from a top closure plate, frcc to swing over the coils. A damping fluid in the cylinder limits excessive oscillations. Information from the coils is pro- cessed to provide the desired indications.•EEU

43.40.Yq QUICK-RESPONSE ACCELEROMETER
Leonard W. Behr et al., assignors to Automotive Systems Laboratory, Incorporated
22 September 1992 (Class 200-61.45 M); filed 5 September 1990
A cylindrical magnetic seismic mass is located in a cylindrical passage within a housing and is held near one end of the housing by a magnetic bias force. Movement of the magnet away from its bias position, as results when the acceleration exceeds a threshold value, is sensed by means of an electri- cal coil.--EEU

Koichi Murakami, Hiroyuki Kanedo, and Kraisorn Throngnumchai, assignors to Nissan Motor Company
16 June 1992 (Class 73/517 R); filed in Japan 18 December 1987
This accelerometer, intended to be batch fabricated by semiconductor technology, in essence consists of a plate-shaped mass supported from a frame by a beam whose deflection is sensed by a piezoresistor. Limit stops around the periphery of the plate prevent excessive defiection.--EEU
