1. Material Case & FibaClad & FibaClad fittings FibaGel product overview

To compliment FibaRoll which is delivered uncured on rolls we are producing pre cured cladding lengths and fittings. This allows the use of non-metallic GRP cladding that requires no UV light to cure and still creates a tough yet flexible, sealed cladding system. FibaRoll (UV curing glass re-inforced plastic, GRP) is used throughout the world as an insulation protection system and to compliment these products we are producing cured sleeves that are easily fitted around insulated piping. We have called these products FibaClad.

Using FibaClad pipe sections can reduce on site application times considerable thus giving real cost savings whilst creating a closed, tough yet flexible insulation cladding that will reduce the risks of CUI. These products give the option of a flexible, bespoke sized cladding system that can be used over most insulation types. These materials have the positive advantages of having, strong tough joints, high degrees of flexibility and strength to resist foot traffic, no razor sharp edges to greatly reduce HSE issues whilst being fast and cost efficient to fit. FibaClad, FibaRoll and FibaGel materials are in compliance with the CINI specification reference CINI 3.2.11.

FibaClad is made from FibaRoll.-A typical construction of FibaClad is shown below. The veil is of a chemical resistant glass and ensures excellent weathering and performance in immersion conditions.

2.0 FibaRoll Products

FibaRoll FR M1– Fire Retardant

This system has been developed for its fire performance, M1 NFP92-501 Epiradiateur Test, BS476 Part 7 Class 1, ASTM E84 class 1 and its low smoke evolution on burning with no harmful gas levels as defined by the International Maritime Organization Resolution MSC 61 (67) 1996. This grade combines fire performance with good chemical resistance and excellent mechanical properties. This product has been used to protect insulation on vessels, vessel tops, pipelines and a wide variety of applications within refineries and chemical

plants. FibaRoll FR M1 has a maximum contact operating temperature of 100C with

peaks up to 160C.

FibaGel FR CC HB5 (Cold Cure)

This is a micro milled glass filled chemical curing adhesion material manufactured from a complimentary resin system as FibaRoll. This material can be brushed or trowelled into place. This is supplied in 1kg kgs cans, the FibaGel FR CC HB5 grade requires the addition of a supplied catalyst and this must be fully stirred in. Adhesion strengths (lap shear) of cured FibaClad onto FibaClad using FibaGel are > 7 MPa.

FibaBond FibaBond is an elastomeric polymer adhesive. It is sag resistant and stays in situ without movement, with high initial tack to surfaces. FibaBond is primarily designed for the bonding of FibaClad sections and fittings together however the high adhesion properties lend themselves to bonding FibaClad to steel or painted surfaces. FibaBond is supplied is 290ml cartridges and is available in Grey and white.

FibaClad Adhesive Choice

Depending on the application requirement, FibaClad can be adhered using either FibaGel CC HB or FibaBond. The FibaGel CC HB is a micro glassfibre reinforced adhesive providing a rigid, non flexible bond. FibaBond is an elastomeric polymer adhesive that provides a very strong bond whilst retaining a level of flexibility.

3.0 Application methods

The FibaClad sections are supplied ready to fit with abraded bond areas and are easily slipped over insulated pipes. FibaClad products have a collar at one end that fits over the end of the next section. Take care to orientate the sections so that the joints are staggered and have the correct weather shed. The required choice of adhesive either FibaBond or FibaGel FR CC HB5 is applied to the circumferential and horizontal joints and removable ratchet strapping, metal banding, masking tape or elastic bungee are used at the circumferential joints area and along the length. This will hold the joints together whilst the Gel FR CC HB5 / FibaBond cures and excess adhesive that squeezes out can be removed with a cloth or a gloved finger. It is important that all seams are fully closed and bonded. FibaGel FR CC HB5 has a cure time of between 30mins and 8 hrs depending on application temperature.

This show’s the end of a FibaClad sections. Note the abraded areas ready for use thus reducing on site work to a minimum.

Jointing methods using a two component FibaGel FR CC HB5.

FibaClad being opened and fitted onto an insulated pipe, note how easy it is to spring open.

FibaGel FR CC HB5 is applied to the abraded joint areas. It is necessary to apply enough so that when the straps are tightened, the FibaGel squeezes out. This will ensure a sealed joint.

Jointing Method using FibaBond

The FibaBond is applied in a thick bead down the centre on the joint areas.

The bead of FibaBond is then spread across the joint areas (longitudinal and circumferential) with a spatula / scraper ensuring that the complete joint area is covered.

The FibaClad bead that comes out of the joint can be smoothed with a gloved finger.

The circumferential and horizontal joints being closed using metal straps (although elastic bungee or tapes can be used). Note that as the joint is tightened, the adhesive applied to the roughened areas squeezes out. This can be smoothed away to ensure a smooth clean and closed seam as seen below. The straps must remain in place until the adhesive is fully cured.

4.0 Health, Safety and the Environment.

While every care is taken to eliminate sharp edges it advisable to wear gloves when applying the FibaClad Pre-insulated pipe sections. FibaGel & FibaBond materials are sticky and applicators are advised to wear gloves when handling. Any waste materials should be fully cured off and then this becomes inert and can be disposed of as non-hazardous materials.

Some FibaClad Mouldings

Molded End caps for insulation

terminations, plus 90º bends, tees and elbows are available.
