Md Yazid Mohd SamanDate: 01-Sep-15
Purpose of Presentation
This presentation attempts to describe Research Methodology & its activities:
System development Research-oriented topics
Table of Contents
1. Introduction
2. Title of research
3. Goals, Objectives & Methodology of research
4. Examples
5. Conclusion
1. Introduction
We have done lots of research related to IT & software.
Systematic investigation into
and study of materials and
sources in order to establish facts and
reach new conclusions.
What Research Questions
Why do we do research?
What are the motivations?
What do we want to achieve?
How do we want to achieve the result?
Examples of research questions
Example: Crime Management System Background:
Various academic staffs and research students have work independently on Crime Management & Analysis.
Research Questions? Where have those data stored? Can researchers
retrieve them? Share the info? Are they available web-based?
What next to be done on the data? Visualization? Prediction? Modeling? Data mining?
2. Title of research
Title of research
What is the title? Glamorous & idealistic? Indicates 3 parts: the problem, method & results
Example: New efficient algorithms based on firefly
algorithm for scheduling concurrent tasks on grid computers
3. Goals, Objectives & Methodology
Defining Goals, Objectives & Methodology
What is GOAL of Project? Glamorous & idealistic
What are the OBJECTIVES of Projects? Achievable & measurable
What are the activities of the research @ methodology?
What are the phases related to objectives

Example in Music: Developing Goals
The course goals are broad statements of what the students will be able to do when they have completed the course.
Goals can be lofty ideas, using words or phrases like "appreciates" or "shows leadership ability."
Example of a broad course goal:
Students will gain a greater appreciation for Latin music.
Example in Music: Developing Objectives
How can we measure if a person appreciates music? It would be very difficult.
That is why we develop objectives. The objectives are measurable and
specific so you can determine if the goal was achieved.
S.M.A.R.T.
Example in Music: Measurable Objectives
Goal: Students will gain a greater appreciation for Latin music.
Examples of measurable course objectives:
Students will: listen to at least twenty different Latin American
recording artists attend three live concerts featuring Latin American
music identify five different Latin American rhythms from
the recordings posted on the course Website create a playlist featuring ten recordings
representing different Latin American genres
Example in Computing: Goal & Objectives
Goal: New protocols based on the Firefly algorithm for packet routing in MANET.
Examples of measurable objectives: Design the new MANET routing
protocol based on the Firefly algorithm
Simulate the protocol with different parameters
Test and evaluate the performance of the new protocol
Defining Methodology
What is Methodology of Project? Given the GOAL of Project and its
the OBJECTIVES, how do we carry out the projects?
The goal is where we want to be. The objectives are the steps needed
to get there.
Mapping: From objectives to methodology?
The Objectives? Design the new
MANET routing protocol based on the Firefly algorithm
Simulate the protocol
Test and evaluate the performance of the new protocol
• The Phases?– Phase#1 :
Design phase of the protocols
– Phase#2 : Simulation phase / Implementation phase
– Phase#3 : Testing and evaluation phase of the protocol
Goal: New protocols based on the Firefly algorithm for packet
routing in MANET.
4. Examples
Example#1- Development of Integrated Crime Management System
The Goal? To design & implement
an Integrated Crime Management System
The objectives? Design the system
framework Implement the framework
in a system Test and evaluate the
system
So, the methodology?
Process (SE) model? Waterfall? Iterative @ spiral ? RAD?
The Methodology? Phase#1 - Design the system
framework
Phase#2 - Implement the framework in a system
Phase#3 - Test and evaluate the system
Planning
Analysis
Design
Implementation
Phase#1 - Design the system framework
How do we design the framework SSADM?
Use UML?
Use-case diagrams
Others?
Phase#2 - Implement the framework in a system
How do we implement it? Architecture? Interface design Algorithms? Data structures @ Database design Others?
Phase#3 - Test and evaluate the system
How do we test & evaluate the product? Use real data User acceptance test Perform usability study Others?
Example#2- Designing Efficient Packets Routing Protocol in MANETs The Goal?
To design efficient Packets Routing Protocol in MANETs
The objectives? Design the new MANET routing protocol
Simulate the protocol
Test and evaluate the performance of the new protocol
So, the methodology?
The Objectives? Design the new
MANET routing protocol
Simulate the protocol
Test and evaluate the performance of the new protocol
• The Phases?– Phase#1 :
Design phase of the protocol
– Phase#2 : Simulation phase / Implementation phase
– Phase#3 : Testing and evaluation phase of the protocol
Phase#1 - Design Phase
How do we model & design the new protocol? Use mathematics @ queuing theory
Show algorithms
Create framework & architectures
Phase#2 – Simulate / Implement the protocol
How do we implement it? Example:
Simulation phase
Implementation phase
Phase#3 - Test and evaluate the new proposed system
How do we test & evaluate the product? Use real data? Performance evaluation of algorithms ~ big-O analysis
