Joy DivisionUK 2007, 93 min, Digital, Dir: Grant Gee8 @ 7PMFilmmaker Grant Gee speaks with now-deceased Factory Records founder Tony Wilson; legendary producer Martin Hannett; surviving Joy Division band members Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and Peter Hook; along with the late Ian Curtis’s Belgian lover Annik Honoré in order to offer a vivid snapshot of a fleeting moment in time when Manchester’s Joy Division changed the face of modern music. Born in the bleak landscape of industrialized Manchester - a city that once thrived as a center of 19th century manufacturing but was far removed from its halcyon days by the time the band was founded - Joy Division combined the energy of punk rock with the anger and alienation of their generation to stunning effect.

AlienUSA/ UK 1979, 117 min, 35mm, Dir: Ridley Scott6 @ 2PMAlien’s plot is not a convoluted one but is linear and smart: a group of blue collar space “truckers” investigate an “alien” distress beacon on an unknown planet, pick up more than they bargain for and ter-ror ensues. But what elevates Alien above B-movie schlock, which it unquestionably draws its roots from, is the level of artistry, design, suspense, horror and shock that Scott captured. It’s all in the details, and here his team, including noted surrealistic artist H.R. Giger, who is credited with creat-ing the Alien’s biomechanical look, spared no effort in going for either a totally alien or a completely human, “used future” look, es-chewing the stereotypically antiseptic space movies of the time (Star Wars), and showing the contrast between the two in their won-derfully complex and intricate sets. Contact with a colony on another planet has mysteriously stopped. Fresh from deep space sleep, Ripley and a slew of pulsar-equipped Marines return to confront the mother alien at her nest, which is also inhabited by a whole bunch of the nasty critters spewing for a fight. Something’s gotta give, and the Oscar-winning special effects are especially inventive (and messy) in the alien demise department. ...Ripley discovers maternal instincts lurking within her space suit while looking after a young girl, the lone survivor of the colony. Already well known as a career - resur-rector, Tarantino cast blaxploitation icon Pam Grier as Jackie Brown, a worn down flight attendant who is busted for deliver-ing money for gun runner Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson), and then has to scheme with the ATF and her bail bonds-man Max Cherry (an also resurrected and Oscar nominated Robert Forster) to keep herself alive and out of prison.
