JANUARY 2013 SCHEDULERebelle Canada 2012, 90 min, Digital, Dir: Kim NguyenFrench with subtitles4, 5, 6 @ 7PM, 5 @ 2PM, 7, 8, 9 @ 9:30PMKomona, a 14 year old girl, tells her unborn child the story of how she became a rebel. It all began when she was 12; kidnapped by the rebel army, she was forced to carry an AK 47 and kill. Her only escape and friend is Magician, a 15 year old boy who wants to marry her. Despite the horrors and daily grind of war, Komona and Magician fall in love. They thought they had escaped the war, but fate decided other-wise. In order to survive, Komona will need to return to where she came from and make amends with her past. Around them, war rages on...A tale set in Sub-Saharan Africa, Rebelle is a love story between two young souls caught in a violent world yet filled with beauty and magic.

Cloud AtlasUSA 2012, 172 min, 35mm, Dir: Tom Twyker, Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski4, 5, 6 @ 8:45PM, 5 @ 3:45PM, 7 @ 6:30PMDavid Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas was a landmark literary event of the past decade, a globe-span-ning, time-tripping puzzle-novel, whose cavalier unruliness belied its intricate design. It was one of those books that instantly elicited the adjective “unfilmable” - but to visionary film-makers Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) and Andy and Lana Wachowski (The Matrix), that was less caution than challenge. Spanning continents and millennia and borne aloft on the talents of a top-shelf cast - including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving and Jim Broadbent - this collaboration on Cloud Atlas transforms Mitchell’s dazzling novel into a mind-bending, genre-hopping cinematic experience. No movie this year more deserves the label “epic.” ... Free will is questioned, karma rules, adventure abounds - and the visuals are astonishing. Many films have sought to impart the message that “we are all connected,” but none has done so with the scale and exhilaration of Cloud Atlas. (Cameron Bailey, TIFF)

Joy DivisionUK 2007, 93 min, Digital, Dir: Grant Gee8 @ 7PMFilmmaker Grant Gee speaks with now-deceased Factory Records founder Tony Wilson; legendary producer Martin Hannett; surviving Joy Division band members Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and Peter Hook; along with the late Ian Curtis’s Belgian lover Annik Honoré in order to offer a vivid snapshot of a fleeting moment in time when Manchester’s Joy Division changed the face of modern music. Born in the bleak landscape of industrialized Manchester - a city that once thrived as a center of 19th century manufacturing but was far removed from its halcyon days by the time the band was founded - Joy Division combined the energy of punk rock with the anger and alienation of their generation to stunning effect.

A monthly film series featuring music documenta-ries, from classic to contemporary. Curated by Tim Rechner, and co-presented with CJSR.

MUSIC DOCS///

If you couldn’t make it to the New Year’s Day Triple Feature, here’s your chance to catch the two films that inaugurated the long-running sci-fi franchise.

1 FILM: REGULAR ADMISSION, BOTH FILMS: $14.

AlienUSA/ UK 1979, 117 min, 35mm, Dir: Ridley Scott6 @ 2PMAlien’s plot is not a convoluted one but is linear and smart: a group of blue collar space “truckers” investigate an “alien” distress beacon on an unknown planet, pick up more than they bargain for and ter-ror ensues. But what elevates Alien above B-movie schlock, which it unquestionably draws its roots from, is the level of artistry, design, suspense, horror and shock that Scott captured. It’s all in the details, and here his team, including noted surrealistic artist H.R. Giger, who is credited with creat-ing the Alien’s biomechanical look, spared no effort in going for either a totally alien or a completely human, “used future” look, es-chewing the stereotypically antiseptic space movies of the time (Star Wars), and showing the contrast between the two in their won-derfully complex and intricate sets. (TIFF)

Aliens USA/ UK 1986, 137 min, 35mm, Dir: James Cameron6 @ 4:15PMThe bitch is back, some 50 years later. The popular sequel amounts to non-stop, ravaging combat in space. Contact with a colony on another planet has mysteriously stopped. Fresh from deep space sleep, Ripley and a slew of pulsar-equipped Marines return to confront the mother alien at her nest, which is also inhabited by a whole bunch of the nasty critters spewing for a fight. Something’s gotta give, and the Oscar-winning special effects are especially inventive (and messy) in the alien demise department. ...Ripley discovers maternal instincts lurking within her space suit while looking after a young girl, the lone survivor of the colony. (Videohound)

Now, as punishment, she has been transferred from Berlin to a small hospital out in the country, far from everything. Working as a pediatric surgeon under her new boss, she is attentive when it comes to the patients, but quite distanced toward her colleagues. Her future, she feels, will begin later. But as the day of her planned escape quickly approaches, Barbara starts to lose control. Over herself, her plans, over love.“Petzold creates a brilliantly incisive study of what becomes of human nature when totalitarian states weave suspicion into the fabric of everyday life.” (Dimitri Eipides, TIFF)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2USA 1986, 89 min, 35mm, Dir: Tobe Hooper11 @ 11PMIt’s a brand new year and DEDfest is excited to start it off with a buzz! We’re proud to screen the one, true sequel to the original masterpiece, directed by the man himself! With the help of a radio DJ Lefty finds his way to the Sawyers’ underground butcher shop, where a battle of epic proportions soon rages! AmarcordItaly/ France 1973, 123 min, Digital, Dir: Federico Fellini, Italian with subtitles 9 @ 7PMFellini delighted audiences with this funny and affectionate fantasy vision of his boyhood, the fourth of the legendary director’s works to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language Film.... Amarcord (the title is Romagnese dialect for “I remember”) is set in Fellini’s hometown of Rimini during the Fascist period. It follows the comic coming-of-age adventures of Titta, a teen-aged Fellini surrogate making his way through the minefields of religion, love, sex, politics, puberty and family life. An inspired mix of memory, melan-cholia, imagination, bawdy humour and nostalgia, the film is set to a memorable musical score by Nino Rota, a favourite Fellini collaborator. The Waiting RoomUSA 2012, 81 min, Digital, Dir: Peter Nicks11, 13, 15 @ 9:15PM, 12, 14 @ 7PM, 13 @ 3:15PMThe Waiting Room uses extraordinary access to go behind the doors of an American public hospital struggling to care for a community of largely uninsured patients. The film - using a blend of cinema verité and characters’ voiceover - offers a raw, intimate, and even uplifting look at how pa-tients, staff and caregivers each cope with disease, bureaucracy and hard choices. Young victims of gun violence take their turn alongside artists and small business owners who lack insurance. Steel workers, taxi cab drivers and international asylum seekers crowd the halls. The film weaves the stories of several patients, as well as the hospital staff charged with caring for them, as they cope with the complexity of the nation’s public health care system, while weathering the storm of a national recession.

CINE CHILE 2012

Salt (Sal) Chile 2011, 114 min, Digital,Dir: Diego RougierSpanish with subtitles17 @ 7PM Sergio, a Spanish filmmaker, loves Westerns and wants to shoot one in the arid desert of Atacama in northern Chile. After being turned down by several producers, Sergio decides to travel to a small town near the desert in search of inspiration. Once there, he’s mistak-en by the townspeople for Diego, an infamous gunfighter, whose former lover’s husband is the town’s most powerful man. Soon, he finds himself living a version of a Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. Dodging stand-offs and bar brawls, he never forgets to document his misfortunes and hallucinations as substance for his new manuscript. Immersed in his fan-tastic reality, Sergio plays his own protagonist, embracing a whole range of experiences, breathing life into his film. (Chicago Latino Film Festival)

Violeta Went to Heaven (Violeta se fue a los Cielos)Chile 2011, 110 min, Digital, Dir: Andrés Wood19 @ 7PM (Reception @ 6:15PM)Spanish & French with subtitlesLike a Chilean Edith Piaf or Bob Dylan, Violeta Parra was a folksinger and pop culture icon whose songs, like “Gracias a la Vida,” expressed the soul of her nation and protested social injustice. Violeta Went to Heaven tells Parra’s extraordinary story, tracing her evolution from impoverished child to international sensation to Chile’s national hero, while capturing the swirling intensity of her inner contradictions, fallibilities, and passions. Director Andrés Wood …evocatively interweaves key set pieces from Parra’s life - her humble family roots, her Paris foray as a celebrated visual artist, her travels through Chile to preserve disappearing tradi-tional culture, her tenuous hold on motherhood, and her tumultuous love life. And then there’s the music. Violeta’s heart-wrenching, indelible songs permeate this film, and they will penetrate the viewer’s soul. (Sundance Film Festival)

The Year of the Tiger (El año del Tigre)Chile 2011, 82 min, Digital, Dir: Sebastian Lelio20 @ 3PM, Spanish with subtitlesManuel is in jail in the south of Chile. During the earthquake of February 27th, 2010, the prison collapses. In the chaos, some inmates, including Manuel, manage to break out. He becomes a fugitive, lost in the middle of the catastrophe. When he returns home, he finds that it has been ravaged by a tsunami that has also taken the lives of his wife and his daughter. Manuel makes his way to his mother’s house, where he finds her dead in the rubble of the earthquake. As he makes his way through the ravaged landscapes, surviving on whatever he can scavenge from his surround-ings, he begins to delve deeper and deeper into his own inner anguish and devastation. This strange new-found freedom will lead him to some unexpected encounters, and bring him face to face with nature’s cruelty, pushing his existence to its limits. (Locarno Film Festival)

Connoisseurs of world cinema will know that Chile has long been home to one of the most vibrant film cultures in Latin America. Very recently, Chilean films have received a great deal of attention and recognition in many interna-tional film festivals. The new generation of film-makers are creating bold works and compelling stories acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. This series showcases three of these films. Presented by The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Cinema Chile, Iberoamerica Images and Metro Cinema.

Troll 2USA 1990, 95 min, Digital, Dir: Claudio Fragasso17 @ 9:30PMOK, OK, we give! The Turkey Shoot Choir has stormed the bridge to demand Troll 2, the aes-thetically challenged classic about a small town of human eating goblins disguised as humans. That’s right, goblins. There is not one troll in Troll 2. No, we don’t know how the goblins resist eating each other while disguised as humans. Yes, we realize that a dentist is cast in the lead-ing role. Not an actor playing a dentist; rather, a dentist playing an actor. Frankly, we wonder if a trip to the dentist might be more desirable…

A monthly celebration of aesthetically challenged films, hosted live by Dave Clarke and Jeff Page (with special sarcastic guests).

TURKEY SHOOT///

Inglorious BasterdsUSA 2009, 153 min, 35mm, Dir: Quentin Tarantino16 @ 7PMIn Tarantino’s alternate-history take on World War II, Brad Pitt plays Aldo Raine, the commander of a squad of Jewish-American soldiers on a covert operation in Nazi-Occupied France. Their mission -- to strike fear into the hearts of German soldiers by not just killing as many as possible, but collect-ing their scalps. When their story collides with that of Shoshanna Deryfus (Menalie Laurent), a french Jew who survived the execution of her fam-ily at the hands of the SS Colonel Hans Landa (an Oscar winning performance by Christoph Waltz), at a movie theatre in Paris, they collectively find themselves with an opportunity to end the War that is too good to pass up. The Third ManUK 1949, 104 min, 35mm, Dir: Carol Reed24 @ 6:30PMPulp novelist Holly Martins travels to shadowy, postwar Vienna, only to find himself investi-gating the mysterious death of an old friend, black-market opportunist Harry Lime - and thus begins this legendary tale of love, deception, and murder. Thanks to brilliant performances by Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, and Orson Welles; Anton Karas’s evocative zither score; Gra-ham Greene’s razor-sharp dialogue; Robert Krasker’s dramatic use of light and shadow, The Third Man, directed by the inimitable Carol Reed, only grows in stature as the years pass. (Criterion Collection) Dr. Sunita Vohra, Director of the Complemen-tary and Alternative Research and Education (CARE) Program for Integrative Health and Healing at the Stollery Children’s Hospital will introduce, and after the film, will talk about medication safety - prescription and comple-mentary/ alternative and host a Q & A. ADMISSION IS FREE AND INCLUDES A SMALL POPCORN. ENCORE SCREENINGS: 26 @ 4:15PM, 27 @ 1PM, 27, 30 @ 7PM (REGULAR ADMISSION).

SCIENCE IN THE CINEMA///

ExcisionUSA 2012, 81 min, Digital, Dir: Richard Bates Jr.18 @ 11PMLife is hard when you’re strange and Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord) knows that better than most. She’s plagued with weird and violent fantasies, overbearing parents and a fascination for D.I.Y. surgery. Excision was the festival darling of the summer and has appeared on numerous top 20 horror film lists over this year. Metro Bizarro is proud to present this pitch black comedy with an all-star cast that includes: Malcolm McDowell, Traci Lords and John Waters. High school has never been stranger.

Sin CityUSA 2005, 124 min, Digital, Dir: Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino and Frank Miller22 @ 7PMBasin City isn’t quite hell on earth just yet, but it’ll do in a pinch. In this ultraviolent hardboiled pastiche, a motley crew of murderers, prosti-tutes and thieves go about their business in the most exaggerated ways possible. Three stories from Frank Miller’s acclaimed neo-noir series are represented: Marv (Mickey Rourke) stars as a hopeless hard case on a mission of revenge in “The Hard Goodbye.” In “That Yellow Bastard,” Hartigan (Bruce Willis) is the archetypal cop about to retire who comes up against a crime so terrible that he’ll devote the rest of his life to solving it. Finally, Dwight (Clive Owen) teams up with the ladies of the night as a mad dog cop stalks the streets in “The Big Fat Kill”.

The Invisible WarUSA 2012, 93 min, Digital, Dir: Kirby Dick 23 @ 7PMFrom Academy-Award-nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick (This Film Is Not Yet Rated, Outrage) comes a groundbreaking investigative docu-mentary about one of America’s most shame-ful and best-kept secrets: the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military. The film paints a startling picture of the extent of the problem: the U.S. Department of Defense estimates there were a staggering 19,000 violent sex crimes in the military in 2010. Screening as a combined effort between the Edmonton and U of A chapters of Amnesty International, as well as the gender-violence prevention groups Hollaback Alberta and ConsentEd. Please join us at 6pm in the lobby for information booths and discussion.

SmashedUSA 2012, 81 min, 35mm, Dir: James Ponsoldt18, 21 @ 7PM, 19 @ 4PM, 19, 22, 24 @ 9:30PM, 20 @ 1:15PM Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Charlie (Aaron Paul) are a young married couple whose bond is built on a mutual love of music, laughter and drinking... especially the drinking. When Kate’s drinking leads her to dangerous places and her job as a school teacher is put into jeopardy, she decides to join AA and get sober. With the help of her friend and sponsor Jenny (Octavia Spencer), and the vice principal at her school, Kate takes steps toward improving her health and life. Sobri-ety isn’t as easy as Kate had anticipated. Her new lifestyle brings to the surface a troubling relation-ship with her mother, facing the lies she’s told her employer and calls into question whether or not her relationship with Charlie is built on love or just a boozy diversion from adulthood.

PusherUK 2012, 89 min, Digital, Dir: Luis Prieto18, 21 @ 9PM, 19 @ 2PM, 20, 23 @ 9:30PM As edgy and explosive as Nicolas Winding Refn’s 1996 cult classic, this English language remake tells the story of a week in the life of Frank, a big time drug pusher in London. Frank’s life is a fun-filled roller coaster of a ride that soon spins out of control. Friendships start to vanish and there is no longer room for love within his life, and violence takes over. Danger and chaos are all around and he becomes a man trapped in his own world. Eventu-ally Frank is left with no one to turn to and nowhere to go, becoming a man paralysed with the fear of knowing that there is no way of preventing his inevitable fate. Fast-paced, visually striking, witty and with some of acting’s finest talents, Pusher will have you gripped from beginning to end.

A monthly foray into the weird, wacky and wonderful world of fringe cinema.

Jackie BrownUSA 1997, 154 min, 35mm, Dir: Quentin Tarantino29 @ 9PMTarantino followed up the world-con-quering success of Pulp Fiction with this relatively restrained adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s novel Rum Punch, and produced what may be his most mature and un-derstated work, a crime based character study about getting older. Already well known as a career - resur-rector, Tarantino cast blaxploitation icon Pam Grier as Jackie Brown, a worn down flight attendant who is busted for deliver-ing money for gun runner Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson), and then has to scheme with the ATF and her bail bonds-man Max Cherry (an also resurrected and Oscar nominated Robert Forster) to keep herself alive and out of prison.

Beauty is Embarrassing USA 2012, 91 min, Digital, Dir: Neil Berkely25, 29 @ 7PM, 26, 31 @ 9:15PM, 27 @ 3PMA funny, irreverent, joyful and inspiring documentary featuring the life and current times of one of America’s most important artists, Wayne White. Raised in the mountains of Tennessee, Wayne started his career as a cartoonist in New York City. He quickly found success as one of the creators of the TV show, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, which led to more work designing some of the most arresting and iconic images in pop culture. Most recently, his word paintings, which feature pithy and often sarcastic text statements crafted onto vintage landscape paintings, have made him a darling of the fine art world. Beauty Is Embarrassing chronicles the vaulted highs and the crushing lows of a commercial artist struggling to find peace and balance between his work and his art. Acting as his own nar-rator, Wayne guides us through his life using moments from his latest creation: a hilarious, biographical one-man show. Hosted by VASA, The Visual Arts Association at the University of Alberta $2 OFF FOR VASA MEMBERS

House (Hausu)Japan 1977, 87 min, Digital, Dir: Nobuhiko ObayashiJapanese with subtitles25 @ 11:15PM, 28 @ 7PMHow to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1977 movie House? As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of Scooby - Doo as directed by Dario Argento? Any of the above will do for this hallu-cinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home, only to come face to face with evil spirits, bloodthirsty pianos, and a demonic housecat. Too absurd to be genuinely terrifying, yet too nightmarish to be merely comic, House seems like it was beamed to Earth from another planet. Or perhaps the mind of a child: the director fashioned the script after the eccentric musings of his eleven-year-old daughter, then employed all the tricks in his analog arsenal to make them a visually astonishing, raucous reality... a bona fide cult classic in the making, House is one of the most exciting genre discov-eries in years. The PaperboyUSA 2012, 107 min, Digital, Dir: Lee Daniels25, 27, 28, 30 @ 9PM, 26 @ 2PM, 26, 31 @ 7PMA sexually and racially charged film noir from Academy Award Oscar-nominated di-rector Lee Daniels (Precious), The Paperboy takes audiences deep into the backwaters of steamy 1960s South Florida, as investigative reporter Ward Jansen (Matthew McConaughey) and his partner Yardley chase a sensational, career-making story. With the help of Ward’s younger brother Jack (Zac Efron) and sultry death-row groupie Charlotte Bless (Nicole Kidman), the pair tries to prove violent swamp-dwell-er Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack) was framed for the murder of a corrupt local sheriff. Based on the provocative bestsell-ing novel by Pete Dexter, The Paperboy peels back a sleepy small town’s decades-old façade of Southern gentility to reveal a quagmire of evil as dark as a Florida bayou.
