METRO ON THE SQUARE 2014 Theme:

Journey of a Lifetime: Knowing, Loving and Serving God

Fall Theme: Following God

The United Methodist Men are a big presence at MUMC. You

can find them enjoying lively gatherings in the social hall, be-

ing concerned about the future of Metropolitan, and making

sure many things around the church are taken care of properly.

This October Metropolitan is pleased to announce the 31st An-

a Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, October 4th with special guest

speaker, Rev. Clarence Davis of New Covenant UM Church.

Sunday, October 12th will be Metropolitan’s Annual Men’s Day,

with Rev. Cary James of Sharp Street Memorial UMC deliver-

ing a powerful sermon you won’t want to miss.

Metropolitan is also pleased to honor the United Methodist

Men of Metropolitan UMC:

Irvin Whittington, President

John Rawlings, Vice President

Clarence Harris, Treasurer

Jonathan Blakeney, Spiritual Leader

Members: Charles Carter, Pinkney Garner, Edward Wyche,

Calvin Thomas, Angelo Thomas, Earl Graves, B. Vinton Moore,

Vinton E. Moore, Lawrence Miller, and Donald Mooney.

One final reflection…. I don't know about tomorrow;

I just live from day to day. I don't borrow from its sunshine

For its skies may turn to grey. I don't worry o'er the future, For I know what Jesus said.

And today I'll walk beside Him, For He knows what lies ahead.

Lyrics from “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow”, written by Ira Stanphill

As September 30th approaches I have been thinking about what I would write in this final reflection called the Pastor’s Letter. For the sake of space I have narrowed it down to three that I am able to share on paper with all the sentiment and passion that I am feeling as I write this.

First, I simply want to say thank you. It is simple, but sincere. The support and respect of the con-gregation, officers and staff I have never taken for granted, but have always appreciated it being given. You have shared your life journeys, joys, trials and tragedies with me, and I am forever grateful. You have allowed me to challenge and push you and you only resisted a little! You have shown your love and appreciation for me and my family with cards, gifts and well wishes, and really thank you is not enough. (FYI, rather than send thank you notes, which I hate writing, I have been praying for each of you during the month of August. I hope you understand!) You have im-pacted our lives greatly and we are proud and privileged to say we were a part of Metropolitan United Methodist church. So I simply say again, thank you.

Second, I want you to remember to keep hope alive! Where there is hope, there is expectation and where there is expectation, there is possibility. And we do know that “…with God, all things are possible”. (Matthew 19:26). Do not for one minute underestimate God and God’s power. You are His children, and He loves you and wants nothing but the best for you, but you have to have hope. And don’t just have hope, be hope. Be hope when others have lost their hope. Be hope when you feel more hopeless than hopeful. Keep hope alive!

Finally, Metropolitan, keep loving God, loving yourselves and loving each other. And keep finding ways to take that love out of the doors of the church, into a world that so desperately needs to know there is a God, and there is a God who loves them. So if you’re going to take love, then you better take some peace, if you’re going to take peace then you need to take some joy, and if you are going to take joy….please, please, please take some hope! Peace and blessings, for now and for always.

Your Pastor,

P.S. – The XO has left the bridge.
