The local church in today’s modern world is more complex than it was when Paul first planted churches. The world has changed but the nature and the fundamentals of what constitutes a local church do not change. Not all methods are wrong but it must stand the scrutiny of the Word and must not change the fundamental nature and the spirit of the church. Paul gives us some very important insights as to the nature and the spirit of the local church in his farewell address in Acts 20:17-28. The local church…

The local church is not just a gathering of people but of those who have been “purchased with His own blood” (v28) and built on network of relationships (v18,36-38). We all need to go beyond attending and using the local church. We need to really love and relate with each others in the local church because “Christ love the church and died for her” (Eph 5:25).

THE APOSTOLIC LOCAL CHURCH

Must be led by godly leaders (v17,28) The paramount quality of a leader is not ability but spirituality. Ability is needed to build a great Christ-centered church but it must be coupled with spirituality. Even deacons, called to serve tables, are required to be “...full of faith and filled with the Holy Spirit…” (Acts 6:3-5).

Must be built on the “whole counsel of God” (v27) We need every aspect of the Word – holiness, commitment, gifts of the Spirit, fruit of the Spirit, sacrifice, victory, suffering, blessings, worship, works, evangelism, discipleship, etc. We must hold on to what the Bible says and should never be apologetic or afraid of what we believe even though others may not; but we need to also add other dimension of the Word to what we already know.

Must protect her members from false teaching and people from within and without the walls of the church that try to and draw people after themselves and their own agenda (v 29-31).

Must find answers in God’s Word and by the power of the Spirit to build up and help people to enjoy all that God has provided for them as their spiritual inheritance (v32).

Must have a giving spirit in serving, finances, time, etc (v35).
