Thunder and lightning... Eagles begin footballpractice for 2012 season
Eagles star running backs Larry Rose (left), aka:ightning,” and Andre Welch “Thunder”, hydrate dur-ing the first practice of the year at Eagles Field. Evenin morning, temps quickly reached the 90s. Phoot, upper right: Assistant Coach Kevin Chase givesinstructions to Rose.. Michael Dillin photos
By MICHAEL DILLINThe Fairfield RecorderAfter more than eight
months, the wait is aboutover.
The 2012 football cam-paign began in earnest at 6a.m. Monday, as theFairfield Eagles took to thepractice field, readyingthemselves to defend lastyear’s undefeated, regularseason record of 10-0.
“Everyone that wewanted to show up ... did,”said first year Head CoachJohn Bachtel, who succeedfour-year veteran HeadCoach Darrell Piske whotook the job at Tyler’s LeeHigh School. “We’re get-ting on it the first day.
“Our attitude is that wewant to be good, (really)bad.”
In between the two-a-day practices, Bachtelpointed to the depth charton the wall of his office.
“It’s a depth chart, butthe players know it meansnothing unless they showthat it does,” Bachtel said.“They know if the guybehind them works harderand produces more, it’ll betheir job (at the top of thechart).
Fairfield is backed withexplosive talent returningfrom last year -- loadedwith explosive talent in therunning game.
Loaded, as in “Thunderand Lightning,” returningtailbacks Andre Welch andLarry Rose.
Bachtel calls a “mauler,”who defensive lineslearned last year that hecan almost singlehandedlybulldoze them back intotheir own secondary.
Welch was named Class3A, District 20, OffensivePlayer of the Year as a jun-ior. He gained 1,200 yards.
His brute power will be
complemented by, yes, thelightning like speed of tail-back Larry Rose.
Rose didn’t play untildistrict play kicked in mid-way through the season. But he responded with 600yards in the second half.
It leaves one to wonder -- not what if -- but when, each will go over the 1,000yard mark.
“Rose is fast, but let metell you, he hits hard too,”Bachtel said.
“Everybody knowswe’re a running team (theyran 75-80 percent of thetime the past two seasons),and we will run. But we’regoing to pass more than inthe past.
Players on the team didtheir share of throwing andcatching in the offseason,

Texas Rangers investigate Freestone County jail fundBy MICHAEL DILLINand APRIL WALKERThe Fairfield RecorderThe Texas Rangers and
a retired FBI agent havebeen called in to investi-gate why an internalaccount of the FreestoneCounty Jail was almost$23,000 overdrawn.
County Attorney ChrisMartin disclosed theinvestigation this week ina report to the FreestoneCounty Commissioners’Court.
“It was not a bookkeep-ing error, it was not a com-puter error,” Martin said.“We’re looking at it as pos-
sible theft.”Martin said his office
was notified of the nega-tive account balance byCommunity NationalBank, the local bank thecounty uses for itsaccounts.”
He did not say if any-one at the bank was being
investigated, and declinedto name names of anypotential suspect in the jaildivision of the Sheriff’sOffice.
He said Sheriff RalphBillings had ordered“mandatory cooperation.”
The Fairfield Recorderhas learned that a number
of jail employees are coop-erating, but at least onehas invoked FifthAmendment rights not totestify, as well as refusinga request to take a liedetector test.
Martin said the fundsin question involves inter-nal jail funds, including
money paid when some-one arrested posts bond.
“For now, we’ve turnedover the responsibility forthe account to the CountyTreasurer, Kay Taylor,” hesaid.

County road money budget fight continues
By Roxanne McKnightStaff Writer
Last week’s Commissioners Court
meeting included another heated dis-
cussion on cutting priority road funds,
with Commissioner Morris Beaver
again suggesting money in that fund
be divided proportionately among
county commissioners.Currently, each com
missioner
receives a certain amount of money in
their budget to spendon fixing roads
in their respective precincts at their
discretion. The larger amount of
county road money, however, goes to
the priority road fund, and the court
votes as a body on which roads most
need repair.“The only thing I am i
nterested in
is getting my part of that priority road
money for the people in my precinct,”
Beaver said. “If we leave this
$300,000 in there, it’s going to be
spent like it has for thepast two years.
Precinct 2 and 3 are going to get very,
very little of that money. I don’t think
that’s right, and I think we need to
change that special road fund and put
it in the regular road funds.”
“From now until thecows come
home, I will neverapologize for
spending the money where it needs to
be spent and not dividing it up arbi-
trarily for people to spend,” County
Judge Daniel Burkeensaid. “That’s
what the law requires. There it is,” he
said, indicating where he wrote the
section of the law at issue on a white
board in the courtroom during the
court’s Monday, Aug. 13 regular
meeting.“You keep claiming
you don’t
know what it is. It’s on the board; I
pass it out to y’all. It’srequired to be
spent based on the needs of the coun-
ty at whole, not divided up by
precinct regardless of need. We spend
money where it needsto be spent; if
we don’t, then we needto stop taking
it from the taxpayer. Period.”
“You’ve explained that to me a
dozen times,” Beaver said, “but it al
doesn’t say the countyjudge needs
go out here and decide which roa
we fix.”“I don’t decide,” Bu
rkeen sai
“this commissioners court decides.”
“Well, you vote on it every time
Beaver said. “You vote against it
it’s in precinct 2 or 3.”“I vote based on loo
king at t
roads,” Burkeen said.“Every time
comes up, you claim you never ev
go out and look at the roads.”
“I said I don’t go outand look
these other roads,” Beaver said.

His brute power will be
complemented by, yes, thlightning like speed of taiback Larry Rose.
Rose didn’t play untdistrict play kicked in midway through the seasonBut he responded with 600yards in the second half.
It leaves one to wonder- not what if -- but wheneach will go over the 1,00yard mark.
“Rose is fast, but let mtell you, he hits hard tooBachtel said.
“Everybody knowwe’re a running team (theran 75-80 percent of thtime the past two seasons)and we will run. But we’rgoing to pass more than ithe past.

Martin said the fundsin question involves inter-nal jail funds, including
money paid when someone arrested posts bond.
“For now, we’ve turneover the responsibility fothe account to the CountTreasurer, Kay Taylor,” hsaid.
