El que Chiapas sea el segundo Estado con mayor población indígena en todo México, cuya reserva natural es la más importante del país aportando casi la mitad de la biodiversidad de toda la República, conforman con las maravillas arqueológicas de esta entidad, una trilogía muy partícular. Y ha sido esta sugestiva combinación de herencias ancestrales y naturaleza apabullante lo que los ha hecho alzarse con la codiciada sede del “Adventure Travel World Summit”, que se llevará a cabo del 17 al 20 de octubre de este mismo año. Estudios demuestran que la tragedia del terremoto y del tsunami acaecidos en Japón el pasado mes de marzo, han hecho que los operadores se concentren en destinos más amigables con la ecología. ¿Cómo capitaliza Chiapas con esta tendencia de los mercados mundiales?

Conversamos con el Secretario de Turismo de Chiapas Licenciado Juan Carlos Cal y Mayor en su residencia sin pretensiones, ubicada en una concurrida avenida de Tuxtla Gutiérrez, de frondosos árboles y ruidosas cotorras, que nos hacen tener que aguzar el oído para escucharle mejor. Nos recibió un sábado en la mañana, al apenas comenzar nuestro viaje, y arrancamos con los temas de ecoturismo y turismo sostenible: “Se ha hecho un gran esfuerzo para conservar intacto todo esto que tenemos como patrimonio, en un momento estelar, porque la gente ya está cansada de sol, arena y playa. Aquí esta, por ejemplo, la comunidad de los lacandones, dueños de su propia tierra y a quienes hemos brindado todas las herramientas para que desarrollen el turismo y vivan de eso. Ellos cada vez llaman la atención del mundo, porque hay quienes afirman que son el eslabón perdido con el Mundo Maya, y aquí se les apoya con todo en la conservación de sus costumbres milenarias. Este foro mundial será una oportunidad de oro para mostrar todo lo que se ha hecho aquí en Chiapas en los últimos diez anos. La Selva Lacandona tiene un millón de hectáreas y los lacandones a pesar de que coexisten con el mundo occidental continúan imperturbables con sus costumbres, ritos, atuendos y vestimenta que datan de tantos siglos. Donde viven les pertenece a ellos y a sus familias, y con ellos hemos trabajado en el diseño y la implementación de una ruta de lugares ecoturísticos”.

Being Chiapas the state with the second largest indigenous population in Mexico, boasting the second most important wildlife reserve of the country and treasuring nearly half of the biodiversity of the whole Republic in addition to archeological wonders, are three very particular factors contributing to the fame of this tourism destination. It has been precisely this appealing combination of ancestral heritages and its overwhelming nature what won it the coveted venue of the “Adventure Travel World Summit” to take place from October 17-20 this year.

That’s the opinion of Tourism Secretary of Chiapas, Juan Carlos Cal y Mayor, who confirmed that the destination has made a serious bet on ecotourism and sustainable tourism, with the mere purpose of protecting their natural resources. We spoke with him on a Saturday morning, just at the beginning of our trip in his own house located in the busy avenue of Tuxtla Gutierrez; we sat in the patio with leafy trees and noisy parrots that made us pick up our ears to get to listen to him better.

“We have taken a lot of effort to maintain intact everything that is our heritage in a key moment when people are getting tired of the sun, sand and beach. Here we find, for example, the Lacandon community, who own the land where they live and who we have provided with everything needed to develop tourism and so they can live on that. They are increasingly attracting the attention of the world as some regard them as the missing link with the Maya World, and we support them in the preservation of their thousand-year-old customs. This world forum will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show off what we have done here in Chiapas over the last 10 years. The Lacandon Jungle stretches to 1 million hectares and the lacandones, despite being part of the western world, continue to be unshaken in their customs, rituals, attires and costumes dating back to many centuries ago. Where they live belongs to them and their families and together with them we have worked in designing and implementing a route through ecotourism sites,” the tourism authority explained.

¿esos lugares ecoturísticos son manejados por ellos mismos?

-Sí claro, por supuesto. Hemos invertido en la construcción y refacción de facilidades, cabañas, lodges, pero también en capacitación. Están certificados con la Secretaria de Turismo, y este es un gran paso, porque es necesario demostrar calidad en todos los aspectos. No querrían ustedes que después de recorrer selva y montaña, y llegar todos enlodados y agotados la calidad en el servicio y las facilidades sean demasiado básicas, verdad? Allí es cuando se valora una buena cama con seis, ocho almohadas, una buena cena gourmet, con todos los elementos de la cocina regional pero bien presentada y servida, pues hacia allá queremos ir, porque creemos que no basta tener calidez, hay que tener calidad. Calidez y Calidad son una formula infalible, y creemos que hay que adaptarlas para conseguir también el turismo cinco estrellas. Aquí tenemos chef gourmet que preparan platillos con los ingredientes típicos de Chiapas, pero intervenidos para complacer el paladar más refinado. Lo mismo estamos haciendo con los textiles, porque la idea es que puedas comprar no solo las maravillas que te venden en el mercado, pero también una pieza que puedas lucir en una boda o en un coctel. O un artículo de cuero que pueda competir con uno de “Coach”. es decir, Chiapas para todos los gustos y bolsillos, que bien. Por su historia y marco geográfico hace muchas décadas les descubrieron los visitantes que en ese entonces ya valoraban lo verdadero. Hoy, como sabemos, este es un nicho de mercado que va “in crescendo” también para los más pudientes. además de confort y buena mesa, como están ustedes capitalizando esto y como les afecta el tema de la seguridad a los ojos de los mercados internacionales?

- México es muy grande, y lo que pasa en el norte del país no tiene porque afectarnos aquí. Chiapas esta geográficamente mas cerca de Panamá y de Bogotá que de Hermosillo, Sonora, por ejemplo, y les hago la comparación porque lo que pasa en Panamá no tiene porque afectar en Guatemala, por decirles algo. Aquí ya perdimos la memoria de cuando tuvimos una alarma, un secuestro, o un robo a un banco.

seguramente hablaron de este tema en la reunión de secretarios de turismo que tuvo lugar en el Centro de Convenciones de Campeche recientemente… -Sí, y a mi me da mucha pena decirlo, pero mis problemas no son los mismos que los otros Secretarios que sí tienen el problema de seguridad. Aquí ya van a ver que pueden andar donde quieran, viajar de noche, pararse donde mejor les parezca..., sin ningún peligro. Entendemos el derecho y la obligación que tienen los países tienen de hacer advertencias sobre la seguridad a sus nacionales que van de vacaciones, y por fortuna ya cada vez generalizan menos y se refieren mas específicamente a las áreas de riesgo y no a países completos, pero el tema del narco y de la violencia nos afecta, por supuesto. No concuerdo con que hay que hacer campañas de que no está pasando nada en

ninguna parte, cuando vemos que sí esta pasando. Nosotros estamos haciendo grandes esfuerzos en mostrarle al mundo nuestra realidad aquí en Chiapas. Tenemos tres millones de mexicanos que anualmente llegan, y más de medio millón de turistas extranjeros, que quedan maravillados de lo que aquí encuentran, y de la seguridad y la tranquilidad que tenemos en todo nuestro territorio.

Puede entonces decir que en el ranking de seguridad Chiapas está entre los cinco estados más seguros de México? se dijo que Campeche es el estado mas seguro, seguido de Yucatán.

-Esto sin duda alguna, pero no nos gusta decir somos los más seguros, no vaya a ser que vengan los malos a tratar de fregarnos. Aquí hemos traído representantes de más de sesenta países, y los que han venido con vehículos blindados se dan cuenta de que no hacen falta cuando caminan por las calles y se relacionan con la gente, y es porque respiran la tranquilidad y armonía de nuestro ambiente. Aquí vino hace tres años o menos la Reina Margarita de Dinamarca en visita privada, con un cordón de seguridad impresionante, que poco a poco fuimos flexibilizando hasta que al final se dieron cuenta de que no hacia falta. Ella estaba feliz caminando por todas partes. Embajadores, como el de Israel, que llego hasta con el servicio secreto la primera vez ya en su tercera visita… no trajo a nadie!

Are those ecotourism sites managed by themselves?

-Yes, of course. We have invested in the construction and refurbishment of facilities, cottages, lodges, but also in training. They are endorsed by the Secretary of Tourism, which is a huge step to show the quality in every aspect. You don’t want to deal with poor-quality services and get to a room that is too basic when you return all muddy and tired from walking through the jungle and going up and down mountains, right? There’s where a good bed with six or eight pillows is appreciated, as well as a nice gourmet dinner with all the elements of the regional cuisine nicely presented and served; that’s where we are heading to, because we believe that warmth is not enough, there has to be quality. Warmth and quality are an unbeatable formula and in our opinion the two characteristics have to come together in order to achieve a five-star tourism. We have here gourmet chefs who prepare dishes with the typical ingredients of Chiapas capable of pleasing the most refine tastes. We are doing the same thing with textiles because the idea is to offer not only the wonderful items for sale in the markets, but also pieces of clothing that are so nice as to wear for a wedding or an Yndiana cocktail party; or leather goods that could compete with Coach products.

That is, Chiapas for all tastes and pockets, nice! Because of its history and geographical position, it was discovered many

centuries ago by visitors who appreciated the natural. Today, as we all know, this is a niche market on expansion for the wealthiest too. In addition to comfort and nice food: how are you capitalizing this and in what way security issues affect you in the eyes of international markets?

-Mexico is very big, and what happens in the north of the country doesn’t necessarily affect us here. Chiapas is geographically closer to Panama and Bogota than to Hermosillo, Sonora, for instance, and I make the comparison to show you that what happens in Panama doesn’t have to affect Guatemala, just to give you an example. We lost track of the last time we heard an alarm, a kidnapping, or a bank robbery.

They probably mentioned the topic in the meeting of secretaries of Tourism that recently took place in Campeche’s Convention Center…

-Yes, and I’m sorry to say it but my problems are not the same as those of other secretaries who do have security issues. Here you will see that you can go wherever you want to, drive at night, and stand everywhere you like… without taking any risks. We understand each country’s right and obligation to warn their people traveling on vacation over security problems; fortunately they are making less generalization and narrowing the warnings to risk areas instead of whole countries, though, of course, drug trafficking and violence does have an effect on us. I don’t agree with making campaigns saying that nothing is happening, when we actually know that something is going on. We are striving to show the world our reality in Chiapas. Three millions of Mexicans arrive every year in Chiapas and more than half a million foreign tourists, and all of them return home amazed about what they found here, how safe and tranquil the region is.

Can it be said then that Chiapas is among the top five safest states in Mexico? Campeche was said to be in the top ranking followed by Yucatan.

-Certainly yes, but we don’t like to say we are the safest in case the bad guys try to fool around. Representatives from more than sixty countries and those who have came here in armored cars realize that it is not necessary when they walk down the streets and talk to people, and get to breathe the tranquility and harmony in the air. About three years ago, Queen Margrethe of Denmark came here on a private visit, with an impressive security cordon that we little by little loosened up and in the end they realized that actually it was not necessary. She walked happily down the streets. Ambassadors, like the one from Israel, who brought the secret service with him when he first traveled to Chiapas and then on his third visit… he didn’t bring anyone!

Hay tantas opciones para el vestido de novia que ni todas las páginas de una revista me servirían pero vamos a reducir opciones y trasladarnos a las bodas que hoy en día siguen siendo las más utilizadas, hablo de esa sensacional boda en la playa.¿Y cómo comenzar a hacer la elección perfecta? pues primero los vestidos de boda en la playa deben ser muy frescos, con te-las ligeras y ellos por si mismos deben ser bastante cómodos y ligeros con un toque casual o desenfadado, así es el look de playa, tal vez alguna flor en el cabello natural de preferencia, sin perder el estilo jamás; ahora vamos a ver que nos conviene más, uno ya elaborado o uno hecho a la medida; eso depende de ti: ir a Luxury Avenue y com-prar un MaxMara o ir a Prono-vias, aunque hacer una cita en el atelier de un diseñador ex-perto en novias como Elie Saab, David Salomón ó Vera Wang y que personalmente te sugieran algo especial para TU NOCHE es realmente muy chic, así que tú decides; al cliente lo que pida, existen novias practicas; pero existimos otras tremendamen-te fashionistas que nos gusta lo diferente, así que déjate llevar por las olas del mar y el roman-ticismo de tu noche mágica y especial; claro sin dejar al lado al antagonista o bueno puede ser nuestro copiloto y aunque no menos importante pero obvia-mente él no es la estrella. ¿Qué hay para ellos si estamos en el mismo mood de nuestra boda en la playa y no quieren caer en guayaberas para su noche? Muy seguido mis clientas me preguntan sobre las tendencias en las bodas, sobre lo nuevo, sobre lo que está de moda. Muy seguido contesto que lo de moda es ser tú, ponerle tu sello a tu evento, ser diferente, lograr que la gente diga, ¡wow! este detalle es tan de los novios.

Es verdad que toda boda tiene su protocolo, tiene algunas reglas y requiere de formalidad. Pero eso es suficiente, lo demás es tuyo. Apóyate en tu wedding planner, pregúntale de que manera se puede cambiar el itinerario para que todo sea más divertido, más alegre. Al final una boda representa la unión de dos almas para siempre. Que mayor celebración que la del amor puro. Mi punto es que si te gustan las hamburguesas, pues hamburguesas para todos. Si no te gusta el pastel, pues cámbialo por tu postre favorito. Que si te quieres poner 3 ó 4 cuatro vestidos, ¿quién te lo impide?

Lo de hoy es lo personalizado, lo único, lo que no se repite nunca. Creo que es momento de que todos abramos nuestro corazón ya que el amor es lo de hoy aunque no estemos enamorados aun, hay que amar la música, los momentos, el shopping todo eso que nos hace felices, disfrutar con amigos, degustar un buen vino, comer un delicioso filete empanizado en amaranto en La HABICHUELA SUNSET, esto es el amor y bueno, en cuanto a relaciones de pareja… será que me tenga que romper el alma otra vez y volverlo hacer hasta que llegue el amor?
