Objective: Create an introductory communication piece promoting the Fundcraft Cookbook fundraising program as an easy, no-risk process. The booklet was constructed in cookbook format to showcase Fundcraft’s cookbook production capabilities.

Challenge: Simplify. Simplify. Simplify. Overcome the perception that creating a fundraising cookbook was difficult and expensive. The existing materials inquiring customers first received included cookbook samples and an expensive 73 page book that made the program seem difficult, confusing and overwhelming. The process needed to be organized, simplified and consolidated into a lower cost, more promotional piece describing an easy-to-follow, step-by-step program. The new promotion also needed to highlight the additional support and materials that would be provided, and the fact that a fundraising cookbook could be produced with no investment if desired (a fact that was lost in the existing materials). The new promotion also served as a cookbook sample and had the added value of including the top ten recipes from a company with over a million recipes on file.

Title The Beautiful Circle

Text There was a time when the world was a place of singing and dancing. Everyone was happy just to be alive.

But there was one Old Man who felt only bitterness. Instead of hearing wonderful music when the people of the village sang, he heard only a terrible racket. And when the children would hold hands at night to dance in the moonlight, he was bothered by their laughter.

The Old Man spent his days alone in his hut. And at night, he would go as far away from the village as possible and gaze up at the beautiful white circle that shone down from the sky. He sometimes thought he could see its face smiling peacefully down at him. It was the only thing that gave him comfort. He often told his troubles to the Beautiful Circle.

“How I wish I could be with you! It must be wonderful to be able to rest in such glorious silence. All of the people here think life is just for song and dance. I’m too old and tired to join in even if I wanted to. Watching them brings me only sorrow. I wish they would just leave me alone.”

One night, the Old Man could stand it no more. As old and tired as he was, he climbed to the top of a tall mountain, and cried out as loud as he could, “West Wind! West Wind! It is I, Old Man! Please carry me high into the air to the Beautiful Circle in the sky!”

The clouds swirled above him as the West Wind approached. Then he heard a voice that seemed to come from all around. “Don’t be foolish,” the West Wind spoke with a mighty whisper. “You’re a creature of the earth, not of the sky. Return to your village, Old Man!”

So the Old Man climbed back down the mountain, sadder and wearier than ever. At first, everything seemed hopeless to him. But that night, he thought of a plan.

Early the next morning, the Old Man hiked far over the hills and into the woods. And everywhere he went, he gathered up feathers that had been lost by wild birds. Late in the afternoon, he returned to the village, dragging a sack almost as big as himself. Then he went to work, sewing all through that night and the next day.

The next evening, when the rest of the village was busy celebrating, the Old Man emerged quietly from his hut. He was dressed from head to toe in a suit of beautiful feathers. Since they were all from different birds, the feathers were all the colors of the rainbow. But the Old Man was too unhappy to care how beautiful his costume was. He only hoped it would serve its purpose.

Climbing once again to the mountaintop, the Old Man cried out, “West Wind! West Wind! It is I, a Beautiful Bird! Please carry me high into the air to the Beautiful Circle in the sky!”

Once again, the clouds moved in from the west. There was a long pause while the West Wind tried to make sense of the strange creature that had called on him. To the Old Man, it seemed to last forever. At last, with a great sigh, the West Wind replied, “Oh... very well.”

Suddenly, the Old Man was lifted into the air. Terrified, he soared higher and higher into the sky, leaving the dark world behind him. Slowly, the Old Man’s fear faded into joy and excitement.

Higher and higher. So far into the night that the stars were no longer just above him, but all around him as well. And best of all, directly in front of him, growing larger every minute, was the Beautiful Circle.

When it had finally grown so big that the Beautiful Circle seemed to be all around him, the Old Man’s feet lightly touch ground.

As they had on Earth, the stars filled the sky above him. But everything else about the world was different. All around him was the whiteness of the Beautiful Circle. And best of all, there was the glorious silence.

For a long time, the Old Man just sat in the stillness, happy at last. But after awhile, the Old Man realized that something was wrong. Though it was peaceful and restful and quiet, it was something else also. It was lonely.

Confused, the Old Man flapped his arms and rose once again into the sky. He flew high enough to look back into the face of the Beautiful Circle. As always, the Beautiful Circle seemed to be smiling.

“Beautiful Circle!” he called out.

“Yes, Old Man.” came the reply.

“I don’t understand,” said the Old Man. “It’s very still and quiet here, but you’re so all alone. Yet, you always look so peaceful and content. How can you be so happy?”

With a smile brighter than ever, the Beautiful Circle replied, “I’m happy because every night, I get to watch a Beautiful Blue Circle in the sky, and listen to the music that comes from it. And even though I can’t be there with its children, I share their joy by shining my light down on them as they dance and sing.”

Upon hearing that, the Old Man understood. Flapping his arms, he rose into the sky again. Higher and higher, through the stars, back to the Beautiful Blue Circle that was his home.

When he finally landed on the ground, his old bones were very tired and sore. Heading towards the sounds of singing, he walked slowly back to his village. Only this time, the children’s laughter was like music to him.

The people were very happy to see the Old Man return. As tired as he was, the Old Man laughed with joy as the children of the village joined hands in the moonlight and danced around him, forming a beautiful circle. And when they sang, the Old Man sang loudest of all.
