MF 5400 Series; evolved and improved

The MF 5400 Series is now available with the superb new Dyna-4, 4-speed ‘powershift’ transmission and a wider choice ofmodels, including the range-topping MF 5470 at 125 hp. In-cabnoise levels have been reduced significantly on all cab modelsand there are also four ‘platform’ models to choose from too.

For even greater operating flexibility, you can specify your MF 5400 to precisely meet your

needs, with a wide range of variable equipment available, either individually or grouped in

‘Option packs’, for simplicity and extra value.

A ‘Low profile’ cab can be specified, thatis mounted lower on the tractor chassis,giving lower overall height. And ‘slimline’or ‘Visio’ roof styles give further variationin height and functionality.

If you are also having a new MF 900 frontloader with your tractor, you can even have theloader beams pre-installed at the factory, so youcan be up-and-running straight away.

Usable power... with much more torque

A wide ‘spread’ of power andtorque work in harmony withthe easy-to-use transmissions,contributing fundamentally tothe versatility of the MF 5400Series.

High-performance engines

All 4-cylinder models feature a ‘cross-flow’cylinder head, which improves combustion,giving lower fuel consumption and exhaustemissions. More precise fuel injection helpsto reduce fuel consumption and give highpower and torque across a wide operating

range, giving excellent economy andperformance in a variety of day-to-day tasks.

Power and torque

On all models, maximum power is achieved atonly 2200 rev/min, helping to improve fueleconomy and reduce noise levels.

The long stroke engines, enhanced with ahost of modern design features, ensureexcellent torque reserve right down to 1000rev/min. But torque back-up is particularlygood between 2200 and 1400 rev/min, so asengine speed falls under load, pulling awaywith a heavy trailer, turning at the headlandand any low-speed manoeuvres all becomeeasier and safer.

Electronic fuel injection

The MF 5465 has a six litre, 6-cylinder engine.Turbocharged and intercooled, with electronicfuel injection, this unit has high power rightdown to below 2000 revs, with excellenttorque back-up. This gives the MF 5465 ahigh power-to-weight ratio and greatflexibility, so it’s equally at home in light dutycultivation work, pulling a heavy trailer orprimary cultivation.

Compact power

Fitted with a SISU Diesel 4-cylinder, 4.4 litreengine, the MF 5470 at 125 hp has anoutstanding power-to-weight ratio. Combinedwith the (standard) Dyna-4 transmission, thiscompact new model is equally suited to thevaried demands of larger mixed farms or incultivation or high-speed transport applicationson arable farms.

The MF 5400 Series is nowavailable with either thefamiliar Speedshift gearboxor the superb new Dyna-4transmission.

Speedshift gearbox

The close ratio transmission has 16 forwardand 16 reverse speeds with ‘Speedshift’ Hi/Lochanges.

At the touch of a button mounted on thegear lever, Speedshift gives a 21%downchange, under load, to power youthrough difficult conditions. Range changes

are also made by pressing a second button onthe gear lever, so all speed selection is madesimply, via a single right hand lever.

Forward/reverse shuttle

Direction change is made by a lever mountedto the left of the steering column, leaving theright hand free for steering, spool valveoperation or other controls. Mechanicalcontrol is standard with PowerShuttleavailable as an option.

Simply move the T-shaped gear lever forwards or backwards to change up ordown through the four Dynashift ratios.

To change range, simply press the range selection button as you move the lever.When changing range, Speedmatching automatically selects the correct Dyna-4ratio to match the tractor’s forward speed.

Comfort control

In front of the LED display is a rotary ‘Comfort Control’ switch.This allows theoperator to adjust the rate of engagement of forward/reverse shuttle selection.So for loader work a fairly aggressive setting speeds cycle times and givesmaximum productivity, while a gentler setting offers smooth, yet almost immediatedirection changes when shuttling.

Creep and Supercreep options

On both gearboxes, ‘creep’ and ‘supercreep’ gears are available, providing anadditional eight (creep), or 16 (supercreep) speeds. With forward speedsdown to 600 m/h (creep) and 160 m/h(supercreep) at full power, you have fullcontrol in specialist low-speed tasks.

Tough linkage, powerful hydraulics

The MF 5400 Series has a liftcapacity of up to 6000 kg,with a wide choice oflinkage, hydraulic and PTOspecifications to furtherenhance operating flexibility.

Highly specified 3-point linkage

The high lift capacity means that heavymounted equipment can be lifted with ease.A variety of hitches is available, with twintelescopic stabilisers and two spool valvesfitted as standard. Fender-mounted switchesprovide convenient linkage height adjustmentfor fast, easy implement attachment.

Simple, effective hydraulic system

With 57 litre/min of oil available for linkageand external hydraulic functions, there is plentyof flow and pressure to cater for lifting heavyequipment or powering ancillary accessories.

100 litre ‘combined’ flow

Available as an option (except on MF 5425and 5435), 100 litre/min oil flow is achievedby combining the flow from two hydraulicpumps. At the flick of a switch, the 3-pointlinkage is ‘locked out’ and the higher flow ismade available to give extra speed and powerfor loader operation.

Fade-free braking

The rear axle houses large disc brakes withconstant pressure lubrication, providingreassuring, fade-free stopping power.. At thetouch of a button, simultaneous actuation offront and rear differential locks also ensuresmaximum traction at all times.The‘Hydralock’ differential lock design ensuresfast, 100% engagement and disengagement ofthe differential locks, with no slippage or lossof power, giving ‘true’ 4-wheel drive whenengaged.

4-wheel drive axle

All 4-wheel drive models feature a centre-mounted drive shaft design for excellentground clearance and a tight steering anglefor manoeuvrability and tight headland turns.

QuadLink front axle (MF 5470)

Available as an option on the MF 5470, MF’sQuadLink suspended front axle enhances ridecomfort and control. It has a compact, simple

design that automatically maintains a constantsuspension height, regardless of axle load.The result is increased stability and a significantimprovement in driver comfort, productivityand safety... both on the road and in the field.

Automated control

Fitted as standard on all MF 5400 seriestractors, the ‘Transmission Controller’simplifies operation by partially automating anumber of frequently-used functions.

These include differential lock control, PTOcontrol and gearbox range selection.

Versatile PTO

Five PTO options are available. Independent540/1000 rev/min is the standard system, with540/1000 rev/min ‘economy’ offering standardPTO speeds at lower engine revs to save fueland cut production costs. In-cab or externalshiftable options, plus ground speed are alsoavailable, matching virtually any farm’srequirements.

Front linkage and PTO (optional)

Using front/rear implement combinations cangive real time savings - up to 30% whendrilling.With a lift capacity of 2.5 tonnes andthe option of an accumulator, hydrauliccouplers and PTO, the MF 5400 Series frontlinkage system can be fully specified to takefull advantage of these productivity gains,giving a quicker return on capital investment.

The standard ventilation system has a 4-speedblower and high capacity heater with sixadjustable and two fixed air vents to ensurerapid heating and demisting.Air conditioningis also available on all cab models.

As an option, the ‘Visio roof’ is available oncab models. The improved view through theVisio roof means that even high lift frontloaders working at full height are fully visible.A glass panel, with sunblind, also tilts andopens for extra ventilation.

Sharing many of the advanced design features of the cabmodels, the four MF 5400 Series ‘platform’ tractors, rangingfrom 75 to 100 ISO hp, offer outstanding performance and ahigh level of comfort and safety.

Meeting the most stringent noise and safety legislation, the MF 5400 Series platform models are now available in mostEuropean markets as well as countries more traditionallyassociated with non-cab tractors.

Options including ‘Standard’ or ‘steepnose’ bonnet styles, centre- or side-mounted exhaust, 2- or 4-wheel drive andmany more enable you to tailor yourtractor to specific application needs.

For example, the steep nose models areideally suited to front loader work or row-crop tasks.

All models feature a modern, flat-floorplatform area with up-to-the-minute styling,excellent visibility and simple instruments andcontrols.

Simple ELC

Though highly advanced, the MF electroniclinkage control system is simple, reliable andeasy to use, giving exceptional accuracy andcontrol.

With a lift capacity of either 5000 or 6000 kgand the high capacity hydraulic system, evenlarge implements can be handled with ease.

Automatic 4-wheel braking

As on the cab models, automated control of4WD, differential lock and PTO give optimumefficiency, whilst minimising driver input.Theelectro-hydraulic system provides automaticengagement of 4-wheel drive when thebrakes or parking brake are applied.This gives4-wheel braking, for added braking efficiency,stability and safety.

Hydralock differential lock

Hydralock is standard on all 4-wheel drivemodels and provides simultaneous actuationof both front and rear differential locks.Theresult is true 4-wheel drive, with both frontwheels locked together and turning at aspeed proportional to the rear wheels. Unlike'limited slip' systems, when disengaged,Hydralock operates as a normal differential,so tyre scrub and soil damage are reducedand tyre life is extended.

Choice of PTO systems

As on cab models, there is a wide choice ofPTO systems including 540 and 1000 rev/min,economy and ground speed PTO. So allimplement and power off-take requirementscan be met efficiently.

Simple servicing and minimised routinechecks are other key areas in reducingdown-time.The MF 5400 Series has anumber of significant design features;some large, some small, to help make lifemore simple:

– Large diameter, oil-cooled, multi-plateclutch, for a long service life, with noadjustment required.

– Self-adjusting brakes.– Maintenance-free battery.– There are no more than ten, readily

accessible, grease points.– Engine oil dipstick, filler, filters and lift pump

are all grouped on the left side of theengine.

– Transmission oil and filters only need to bechanged every 1200 hours, with an engineoil change only needed every 400 hours.

– Cab removal is unnecessary as transmissionside covers give access to gear selectors,clutches and hydraulic pumps.

– Availability of the service andrepair contract, giving total piece of mind(please see back page for more details).

Obviously, costs are increasingly important in today’scompetitive farming environment.
