Intensive Literacy and Numeracy (ILN) is one of the New Zealand Government’s long-term labour development stra-tegic focuses. ILN targets stronger literacy and numeracy learning gains through an appropriate structured delivery with strong community links.

The required key elements are: • Intensive learning that consists of 100 hours of direct delivery of literacy and numeracy learning within a 20 week period. • Quality learning opportunities that: * have clearly articulated literacy and numeracy outcomes * have before and after measures of learning gain * are based around the learning progressions * are delivered by appropriately qualified staff • Strong community links

We use flexible delivery methods in order to meet the individual needs of employers and participants. It includes one-to-one needs analysis and management, pair practice, group sessions, classes and workshops and guest (employer) speakers according to the plan for the group. The methods give learners sufficient individual attention. They also encourage learners to build confidence step by step.

The outcome is to improve literacy and numeracy skills against the TEC and NZQA Learning Progression. The pre-employment, job placement and work support service are the bonus values of the programme. We have met the target of: • Over 90% learners have completed the programme • 100% Individual Learning Plans were developed and followed • Over 30% of the group received part/full time employment assistance • 100% ongoing support

• Improve their English language and literacy proficiency with self confidence

• Obtain New Zealand employment awareness, skills and knowledge

• Pursue further training for employment opportunities

• Provide a foot in the door to career development in NZ

• Gain study skills and pathways to appropriate credentials at other institutes

• Better integrate themselves and their families into NZ culture and society

Training For WorkIndustry Partnership – Skills for IndustryEmployment Placement ServiceWe work with the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) – Work and Income to deliver Industry Partnership and Training For Work and Employment Placement Service programmes. These programmes aim to provide local em-ployers with potential employees that are specifically trained to their entry-level and middle-level requirements. The programme aims to enable Work and Income clients to begin and develop a career, allowing clients to become valued employees within the workplace and the industry.

Our programme consists of carefully selected content appropriate for the level of the target group, while maintain-ing a flexible design that meets individual learning needs through skills development and supportive workplace practices. Each programme contains training and job placement followed with in-work support:

We aim to provide suitable employees with the skills required by employers and industries. The course covers pre-employment matters, communication skills, workplace context and specific employer’s required skills.

We aim to recruit learners with relevant industry background when possible. We match their skills and experience with potential employers. The employers are fully involved in the selection and recruitment process. They are invited to meet with participants during the training process. The employers select participants for job interviews according to their employment requirements. We assist employers to find and train suitable participants.

Assessment processMFH has a formal assessment system that is complemented by an Individual Learning Plan for each student. The skills and knowledge gained are measured and reported at the completion of learning through a formal assessment system.
